I mean, it seems a bit full-on to me, but it's in the bible so I guess it must be OK. Psalms 109, verse 8 onwards.

Let his days be few; and let another take his office.
Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow.
Let his children be continually vagabonds, and beg: let them seek their bread also out of their desolate places.
Let the extortioner catch all that he hath; and let the strangers spoil his labor.
Let there be none to extend mercy unto him: neither let there be any to favor his fatherless children.
Let his posterity be cut off; and in the generation following let their name be blotted out.
Because that he remembered not to show mercy, but persecuted the poor and needy man, that he might even slay the broken in heart.
As he loved cursing, so let it come unto him:
As he delighted not in blessing, so let it be far from him.

That's quite poetic.

RJnomore1 · 03/10/2020 19:59

The Old Testament is brutal isn’t it?

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 03/10/2020 20:01

Harsh but fair?

There's a name for those psalms which I have forgotten. Maybe the vengeance psalms.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 03/10/2020 20:11

It's called A Cry for Vengeance, I think.

Take home message for me is that it's fine to wish ill on someone if they fit these criteria. Remembered not to show mercy, check. Persecuted the poor and needy man, check. Slayed the broken in heart, check. Loved cursing, check. Delighted not in blessing, check x100.

Yep, i'd go along with that. He's an absolute monster, devoid of empathy and feeling, and the world would demonstrably be a better place without him. It's obvious anyway, but Mary Trump's book is very enlightening re how this has happened. And before anyone says 'but his family' - the ones old enough to know better are pond life too. I saw a Tweet the other day that said something like 'we all know he'd have his kids ground up into cat food in exchange for a couple of shots off his golf handicap' which I think probably sums his fatherly capabilities up....

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 03/10/2020 20:19

That could have been written about him. It's sad to think that there have always been bastards in power.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 03/10/2020 20:31

I read Mary Trump's book too. His dad.... if he was a fictional character, you'd say he was too evil to be realistic!

Of course it's not the spirit that such people are aiming for. I seriously hope you already knew of that prayer or stumbled across it because whatever you think of the man actively searching for a prayer that wishes him dead is both distasteful and a massive waste of time.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 03/10/2020 20:45

@StatisticalSense sadly came from someone with better knowledge of the bible than me Grin

I wouldn't say it was a waste of time. It was not only entertaining, but also a good way to counter some of the sanctimonious ' but life is sacred' BS. I know we are supposed to be doing 'they go low, we go high' but he's already thrown all of the norms out of the window so meh.
SheepandCow · 03/10/2020 20:48

How about - an eye for the eye and the whole world goes blind.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 03/10/2020 21:13

@SheepandCow ah, now you'd have to take that up with God. He said it, I'm just the messenger.

Nah, posting to whine about it is a massive waste of time.

Imprecatory psalms
ARudeTerriblePerson · 03/10/2020 22:01

Yes, there you go. Thanks.

Harsh but fair?
Yeah. If he carries on for another 4 years the entire ecosystem of the planet is doomed so he's going to basically kill all of humanity. I have my fingers crossed that this one happen one way or the other.

There has been a clinical trial on prayer (really!) which says if anything it can make things worse so please please please keep praying for the Orange One.

Sounds like it was written just for him.

vera99 · 04/10/2020 09:37

He held the Bible upside down in his riot city photo op - God remembers stuff like that you need to sweat the detail for intercessory protocols if you want to get pass St Peter.

"Not long after, the then candidate was asked during an interview with Bloomberg to expound on one of his favorite chapters from his favorite book and he demurred.

“I wouldn’t want to get into it. Because to me, that’s very personal,” he said. “The Bible means a lot to me, but I don’t want to get into specifics.”

Asked if he could at least choose between the New and Old Testaments, he again passed.

“Probably equal. I think it’s just incredible.”

HeyMacarona · 04/10/2020 09:38

Now go and learn the meaning of this Scripture: ‘I want you to be merciful; I don’t want your sacrifices.’ For I have come to call sinners, not those who think they are already good enough. (Matthew 9:13 NLT)

TheoriginalLEM · 04/10/2020 09:43

He'll rot in hell when he goes but its not looking like it will be yet. I don't wish him dead or suffering, that would drag me to his level.

Id just like him to toddle off and have no further influence on the world. Maybe get a case of chronic threadworm

bathsh3ba · 04/10/2020 09:44

Nice try OP but if you understood the context of those Psalms and what they mean in the wider Bible, you would realise you just shot yourself in the foot.

Hmmph · 04/10/2020 09:49

Sadly replaced by “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” in the New Testament.

Also King David wasn’t the nicest chap in the world nor a very good moral example.

But the world’s of that psalm are very appropriate and reflect a lot of people’s feelings. How sad it is that for thousands of years there have been evil but powerful men like Trump.

The verse before your quote also mentions something about him being replaced by someone else evil. So not so great...

Hmmph · 04/10/2020 09:51

“6 Appoint someone evil to oppose my enemy;” Confused
