Corona virus is the 24th cause of death in this country.

We are not reacting this way to the other 23.

Locking healthy people up is insane.

All lockdown does is suppress the virus. That is widely acknowledged.

We’ve managed to suppress it till winter - great result! Now it will come back at a time when we’re vulnerable to flu.... unless we suppress it again for a bit. So, up we get for a cycle of lockdown, release, more lockdown, and on and on, fucking our economy. Destroying the thing that pays for our schools, our hospitals, our pensions, our social workers, our elderly care, our roads...

We can’t afford lockdown. If pursued the inevitable cycle of lockdowns, potentially for years, will utterly destroy our country.

This highly unpleasant virus will kill the elderly and vulnerable unless they self isolate. That’s all we can do. The vulnerable & elderly self isolate and the rest of society carry on. If you don’t like it, blame the Chinese government who failed to crack down on wet markets despite knowing the risk.

So no, if the test of lockdown ‘working’ is whether it is a sustainable, proportionate policy tool that gets effective long term results - lockdown does not work. It just (at best) temporarily conceals the problem, at a huge cost. It’s the political equivalent of sticking your fingers in your ears and shouting ‘la la la I’m not listening’ and hoping that makes the problem go away.

This post is back to front.

Yes, obviously lockdown suppresses the virus. The alternative is letting lots of people catch it.

The idea of isolating the vulnerable is just a fairy story. It can't be done.

The two choices are suppression, or lots of deaths.

I always wonder how people picture "the vulnerable". I'm sure we all know people over 60 who live very full active lives with work, friends and family. Not to mention people of all ages with a wide range health conditions that don't stop them doing anything in normal times.

Are you expecting these people to isolate themselves indefinitely? What about their partners, children and families? What about their jobs?

Or as some people have said do you give them a choice to isolate or live their life free of restrictions even though that life might be cut extremely short? To me this doesn't really sound like a choice, it's more like a threat.

They are all out tonight.

Is that you Nige? I hear you have a new political venture cos you are short on money and attention.

@AlecTrevelyan006

incredibly, the average of someone in the UK dying with Covid is older than the average life expectancy in the UK
And what, are these people over-stayers? FFS.

Another way to put it, is that covid kills people who have otherwise been healthier or in receipt of better geriatric care than the average person.

Contravting covid doubles your normal chance of dying. Fair enough if you're 40 and in good health, but if you're 60, overweight with high blood pressure and T2 diabetes it's not quite so rosy.

But his main point is wrong? The aim isn’t to defeat it through lockdown. Tell him to go and read The Roses of Eyam. He doesn’t seem like the sharpest tool in the shed. He proves lockdown works to reduce spread by saying it was at 24th in August. I don’t understand why anyone would listen to someone like him? He’s clearly an idiot aiming to rile people up who are already cross and don’t get the virus in any way.

Also Covid cannot be blamed for all economic issues we are facing and will face.
