Corona virus is the 24th cause of death in this country.

We are not reacting this way to the other 23.

Locking healthy people up is insane.

Think it’s time to hide this topic, same old shit day after day.

JKRowlingIsMyQueen · 28/09/2020 18:37

I have faced this months ago. It's a short term solution to a long term problem. Locking up a few weeks to stop overwhelming hospitals works, but in the long term it does more damage than good. The jig is up.

SheepandCow · 28/09/2020 18:38

How do we treat other illnesses with unchecked Covid spreading freely through the population?

Hospital beds full and staff off sick (it might not kill many but it can disable for weeks - sometimes months).

Face it... Proper lockdown, i.e. including restricted borders continued after easing out of lockdown (with proper quarantine for essential travel) does work.

The only way to protect the economy (beyond the middle of next week) and protect health is to contain Covid.

Short-term pain, long-term gain.

Had we done a proper lockdown in February or March, we'd be largely back to normal by now. Schools, hospitals, pubs, shops, restaurants, bars, gyms, sporting events, entertainment venues. All open as normal. Like fellow islands Australia and New Zealand.

Countries that took effective measures to deal with it now have much healthier economies and more normal lives than us.

JKRowlingIsMyQueen · 28/09/2020 18:39

@Drowninginwashing

... or maybe it's only 24th BECAUSE of lockdown...
Whatever helps you sleep at night.
SheepandCow · 28/09/2020 18:46

This isn't going to go away by Christmas (it would had we used our island advantage at the start - like Australia and New Zealand).

We have two choices. Continue for another year in this shitty way - dragged out, in out in out, halfhearted measures here and there, more jobs lost, long-term economy fucked, needless untimely deaths, and a significant proportion of the working age population disabled - unable to work for months (potentially ongoing) because of Long Covid.

Alternatively, we could take action to contain Covid. Temporary shit situation (like an operation) to prevent an ongoing longer-term shit situation.

Sadly it looks as if (thanks to lack of foresight) we're going to be continuing along the long-term shit road.

Derbygerbil · 28/09/2020 18:47

@goldrabbit22

Your logic is unhinged...

You could argue lockdown isn’t necessary.... but to argue it’s not worked, and then back that up by saying that numbers are really low is a crazy line of argument!

It’s a bit like saying “seatbelts don’t work because fewer people die now than when before they were introduced” Hmm

SheepandCow · 28/09/2020 18:48

@JKRowlingIsMyQueen
Ovaltine. Particularly the Swiss chocolate version. It's lovely. A perfect bedtime drink.

SheepandCow · 28/09/2020 18:49

I love gold rabbits. The Lindt chocolate Easter ones. Yum!

Beebeeboo2 · 28/09/2020 18:52

It did work...

Face it. Lockdown does NOT work.
lifesalongsong · 28/09/2020 18:53

If lockdown didn't work we were bloody lucky that cases and deaths plummeted while we were doing it, phew.

CrunchyNutNC · 28/09/2020 18:55

Ovaltine make a swiss chocolate version?! How did I not know this!

I used to like Bournvita, the Cadbury version, not seen it in ages though.

CrunchyNutNC · 28/09/2020 18:56

sheepandcow you get lindt chocolate reindeer in a gold wrapper too - not long to wait now!

Drowninginwashing · 28/09/2020 19:00

I love chocolate. A nice hot chocolate in the bath is a real treat

CrunchyNutNC · 28/09/2020 19:01

Do you like British chocolate OP?

AlecTrevelyan006 · 28/09/2020 19:04

it depends on your definition of 'it works'

it works in terms of reducing the spread of coronavirus

it doesn't work in eradicating coronavirus

it also creates as many problems as it solves

Nikki078 · 28/09/2020 19:05

If by 'lockdown works' you mean it lowers the infection rate, it only works as long as it is in place and assuming complete isolation eg. no migration in and out of the country. It's by no means a sustainable solution.

RepeatSwan · 28/09/2020 19:06

Oh this again. How many more times with the nonsense.

SheepandCow · 28/09/2020 19:08

The Swiss ovaltine is the original. It's amazing! They do a chocolate spread that's like a better Nutella. I really want some now.

I must try the chocolate reindeer. I love chocolate!

JS87 · 28/09/2020 19:09

In August Covid was the third leading cause of death in the US
www.webmd.com/lung/news/20200818/covid-the-third-leading-cause-of-death-in-the-us

So just because it is the 24th leading cause here doesn't mean it would stay that way if we lifted precautions.

SheepandCow · 28/09/2020 19:11

Ovomaltine.
It's amazing. There's the drink, the spread, biscuits, and chocolate bars. So nice!

Nellodee · 28/09/2020 19:13

Now I've got the jingle stuck in my head. Thanks for that.

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 28/09/2020 19:14

Original lockdown worked to slow transmission but was only ever a sticking plaster solution.
The new social lockdowns won't work as the vast majority of transmission I'd now taking place in schools, unis workplaces and care homes

Not people being in the pub after 10pm.

GeorgeMichaelsEspadrille · 28/09/2020 19:14

No! No! No!

Dear god, don't be so ridiculous!!

Hot chocolate in the bath?! Maddest thing I've read on MN today (and that's saying something).

mrshoho · 28/09/2020 19:15

It's currently 24th with the restrictions/lockdowns in place. But what number would it be without? We saw in April it was the leading cause for some time following the period we had before the national lockdown when there was little community testing taking place. So I think you'll find it does work to suppress the amount of infections. We're all still susceptible to the virus so of course it makes sense to continue with restrictions.

Drowninginwashing · 28/09/2020 19:16

@GeorgeMichaelsEspadrille I am mortally offended Grin

Do you have insider intel on George's shoes?
