The number of cases at Sheffield (being very open about figures) has more than doubled to 207.

Apparently Queens University Belfast is suffering a worse outbreak than the Uni is admitting to.

According to staff speaking anonymously to media the Uni is recording 45 to 60 cases a day.

Bournemouth has cases in multiple student halls

Figmentofmyimagination · 02/10/2020 15:17

Scottish unis started back around a month before the rest of the uk which explains a lot of the difference.

Also, Scottish freshers a year younger then rest of uk - maybe more immature, in terms of behaviour, on average than at English and Welsh unis?

A 'very small number' of confirmed cases at University of Bristol, inc one in halls, according to local media

53 Higher Ed institutions identified as having outbreaks since end of August is 32%. Completely ignoring staff, there are on average 14.5k students per institution, a total of 2.4m. Often sharing housing and many are in an age group estimated as 1 in 100 being currently infected or 24,000 people across 165 institutions. Note also that some institutions haven't gone back yet or are only just going back.

Based on basic maths above and an outbreak being as small as 2 people, it would be reasonable to assume that all 165 will be identified in coming weeks as having some sort of outbreak. Which doesn't say much of interest.

What is the purpose of the thread? If it's to track whether outbreaks are being handled appropriately (support isolation, no locked fire escapes etc) - great. If it's to track whether outbreaks are growing or coming under control - not sure how that can be done without PHE/ gov and institutions formally reporting - that will work best by requesting expanded info in weekly government surveillance reports. If there's some other purpose to the thread, it would be useful to state it?

Have heard there has been extensive testing in Durham, including asymptomatic contacts- so they're obviously going in hard with the testing

Tomatoesneedtoripen · 03/10/2020 09:37

I see Brighton has 10 cases, all off campus.
not a large number.
