Are cases going up in Scotland since schools have reopened?

Wondering how things are going since schools have opened there. I’m assuming we’ll have similar issues when dc are back in England. I know there was the school with 3 cases but has there been anything else?

A specialist ASN school in Dundee has been closed for 2 weeks. I think 8 staff have been tested positive. I teach in secondary and don't feel safe, pupils are making no attempt to distance even when it's very easy to do so. There's also no way to remain at a 2m distance and teach a practical subject safely.

Those links emphasize the outbreak is from the community - not from within the schools.
Our school had reception to Y 8 back full time from mid june, and Y10 and 12 part time. All measures in place, a one way system and staggered lunch times, all of which will continue in the new school year.

Even community cases in school cause masses of disruption - lots of close contacts need to isolate. We should see in about a week whether spread has occurred in schools, we don't know yet due to incubation period. OP asked how it was going, more children are testing positive - guess they are more likely to be tested now they are back at school though...

It was 8 cases last time I knew. They're asking anyone who lives with a pupil at the school to self isolate for 14 days too, regardless of symptoms.

Rules keep changing ... does that mean no going out not even to walk the dog? Talk about a huge economic hit in some areas. Do people in those households get furlough if they don't have a job that can be WFH?

This sounds very dramatic but could simply be one positive case from community transmission and the class and teacher all self-isolating as a class bubble.

I think so. Most of the cases so far have been from community transmission but the schools have only been back for just over a week so I'd expect to see more soon!

Haha... it's an additional support needs school, social distancing is difficult with children who are NT, it's impossible with children who have additional needs. If this was my sons school, I & his siblings would need to self isolate because there's no way on earth I could just shut him in a room away from all of us!

I don't really know about walking the dog. I'm assuming not based on what the NHS website states: do not go to work, school or public places – work from home if you can

do not go on public transport or use taxis

do not go out to get food and medicine – order it online or by phone, or ask someone to bring it to your home

do not have visitors in your home, including friends and family – except for people providing essential care

do not go out to exercise – exercise at home or in your garden, if you have one.

With maintaining physical distancing in the house I'd imagine that would be pretty tricky. The children at that school have additional needs (which are sufficient to mean they are not in a mainstream school) so even the older ones are going to need lots of contact in the home to provide their care, they would also possibly struggle to understand and find it distressing if family members were distancing from them.

There is no social distancing when everyone goes back at the same time. I still feel that the kids should go back on a week on / week off Part time plan.

Sending everyone in at the same time is going to cause chaos.

4 school haven't closed. As far as I know 1 school has closed and others have children/some teachers isolating

We really need a way of tracking what’s happening with schools, because we sure as hell aren’t going to get clear information from the government.

I think they should maybe wear masks when in corridors moving to classrooms and then have them off when sitting in class

Students shouldn’t be in corridors. They should be entering rooms from outside through fire escapes, then staying put all day

@Clive222 you've never been in a senior school then?? Four floors, no external staircase I know that the government is using special magic to make sure schools a place where covid doesn't spread but they haven't yet mastered levitation. Nor teaching the full range of options in one class.

Not any more. Students stay in one room and teachers move. Or it wouldn’t be COVID compliant

you're wrong. They move classrooms. Bit hard to do PE in a classroom or do chemistry experiments with no equipment
