Are cases going up in Scotland since schools have reopened?

Wondering how things are going since schools have opened there. I’m assuming we’ll have similar issues when dc are back in England. I know there was the school with 3 cases but has there been anything else?

What we are seeing is a rise in sickness bugs etc, kids immune systems have taken a beating

Littleposh · 22/08/2020 20:52

So just to confirm, that's one school then?? In all of Scotland?? There's going to be some very disappointed people on MN

Good summary here: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-53833823

It mentions two which have closed.

It doesn't mention Peterhead, which closed for a week and now reopened:
www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-north-east-orkney-shetland-53864982

Looks like that is all. I don't think anyone is going to be disappointed.

Shitfuckoh · 22/08/2020 22:08

I won't be disappointed, if those cases are the only ones that are going to touch any schools and no other ones close - good! But it does makes me worried that we're seeing cases in school already - especially as Scotland have lower figures than England do.

I am worried about the Dundee one especially - my child attends a special needs school. It was reported 8 cases and then became 12 last time I knew. To me, that is a big number within 1 school for it 'just' to be community spread outside of school.

dementedpixie · 22/08/2020 22:16

That was mainly adults with only 1 child with a positive result, last time I read about it

Shitfuckoh · 22/08/2020 22:41

I think that was the case when it was 8, I've seen the number has gone up to 12 but I haven't seen any reports regarding whether the increase is children or adults? Children or adults though, that still seems like a big increase to me, especially when you consider adults are told to socially distance from each other.

Kingspark School in Dundee has been closed after twelve people connected to the school, including one pupil, tested positive for Covid-19

redbigbananafeet · 22/08/2020 22:45

@Clive222

4 schools have closed so far
And 12 Glasgow schools have had cases
Shitfuckoh · 22/08/2020 22:59

Sorry yes I had a look after I'd posted. It says this also: including one pupil who was identified as a contact of one of the early cases.
Not sure what to make of it though. If it is mainly issues with staff in schools, that's also very bad as if the teachers are off sick who exactly is going to teach?

This is going to be a long school year.

Shitfuckoh · 22/08/2020 23:01

& I would like to point out that teachers matter too! Obviously I'm concerned about everyone connected with schools.

Downton57 · 22/08/2020 23:07

The teachers can't socially distance in a school for children with complex needs. It's utterly impractical.

neveradullmoment99 · 22/08/2020 23:09

Its not about closing schools. The Scottish government has said they wont close schools unless their is transmission within a school Plenty of cases in schools [ brought in from the community so far] with children isolating and classes not coming in. Closing schools is a last resort. They wont do it unless there are two cases transmitted to one another from the one school.

neveradullmoment99 · 22/08/2020 23:12

I am a teacher and we have risk assessments however I am seeing things relax already and we have only been back for just over a week!
Social distancing between pupils and teachers is not happening as is between staff. That is in a primary school. England has higher cases. I really think its very worrying for those who teach there. We are quite low in cases in the community.

neveradullmoment99 · 22/08/2020 23:13

..and we are just now starting to see cases in schools!

neveradullmoment99 · 22/08/2020 23:16

*there is transmission not their! fgs!

Shitfuckoh · 22/08/2020 23:16

@Downton57 I know. I meant teachers are told to socially distance from other teachers but thinking about the set up in my childs school (SEN school) then I think it's not possible for the teaching staff to be distanced from each other either. There's some classes with 1 teacher and 4 TA's, plus children. All in quite small classrooms which defo will not allow space for 5 adults to socially distance from each other Sad

Bellebelle · 22/08/2020 23:30

Too early to know if the return to school is going to cause a big increase in numbers, I think we’ll have a better idea by the end of the month.

My children go to the high school in Edinburgh where everyone is to wear masks in corridors as they move between classes. A lot of pupils have been doing that from the first day back anyway as the school said they’d prefer if they did. They’ve been consulting with parents, teachers and pupils and as everyone has been supportive of it they’ve made it compulsory from this Monday. I think it’s a good thing and both my children are fine with it, they expect that some of their older teachers may ask them to wear them in class at some point too, fair enough.

DumplingsAndStew · 22/08/2020 23:49

Although they've ticked some boxes (staggered starts, finishes and lunches - breaks all at same time!), there's no social distancing happening at my kids school.
Teachers are just as bad as the kids.

Yes this. Although we have different break times. Many staff do not distance from either the children or other staff!

No issues in my area so far but I am rural. Youngest 2 DC go to small primary school with 65 kids, lunch in classrooms etc. Eldest is at secondary, she socially distances, wears a mask on school bus etc

Personally pleased they are back full time as the part time learning plan originally set out would have meant I would have needed to give up my job

neveradullmoment99 · 23/08/2020 18:25

I am gad mine are back because they live the social element of school and they are learning better.

DumplingsAndStew · 23/08/2020 23:41

The latest news from Kingspark SEN school in Dundee is 22 positive cases so far: 17 staff, 2 pupils, 3 community contacts. All staff and pupils are now self isolating.

One positive case linked to St Peter & Paul's School in Dundee. All pupils in P2A isolating.

One positive case linked to Happy Times Out of School Club at Downfield Primary, Dundee. All club staff and attending pupils are isolating.

Newbury nursery in Fife closed due to positive case ☹️ hoping there won't be more. It is so good to be back and want to stay back.

I work with asn and we can't social distance from the kids, we try but to keep everyone safe we have to be close. We also need to suppirt each with some activities. It's not that we aren't doing our best to minimise transmition, we are. But we are also doing our best for the kids to keep them safe and meet their needs.

EachDubh · 24/08/2020 00:41

Newburgh nursery, sorry auto correct

GlassOfProsecco · 24/08/2020 12:19

I really hope they can keep the schools open, but have my doubts, especially as winter approaches.
