Melbourne apartment towers complete lockdown

Imtootired · 04/07/2020 15:30

In Melbourne, Aus there are five tower blocks that will be put under complete lockdown for five days. I am all for being proactive about stopping the spread of coronavirus but this is madness. They are public housing so people on very low incomes for various reasons including elderly and disabled people, refugees and single parents. There will be police guarding each floor. No one will be able to leave for any reason. There have been many reports of bad hygiene practices for people quarantined in hotels and it makes me so angry that the government and dodgy contacted companies didn’t do their jobs properly and now the most vulnerable are paying the price. How will they be able to attend to all the individual needs of 3000 people? If I was stuck in a tiny apartment with my children with no time to prepare I would be furious. There were no armed guards for rich travellers returning home. I’m so angry and feel so bad for the residents. This is the beginning of a police state and once it’s happened it could happen again. If I was a resident I would be getting legal advice ASAP. I hope someone takes them to court.

@YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet - maybe you would like to take a really good look at this thread and advise arrogant UK posters not to post ignorant remarks about other countries!!!!! I am very angry with your response and as far as I am concerned I think it's time I left this site as obviously people's opinions only matter if they are in the UK. The poster who complained has been extremely unpleasant about Australians and the Australian way of life - but apparently that is okay by MN. Well it's not okay by me!

YetAnotherSpartacus · 07/07/2020 09:07

I found heaps of images for passive-aggressive Koala! An entire treasure-trove of Koala memes. That's my procrastination for today taken care of.

eaglejulesk - I just want to say that the koala was not directed at you and that I agree with what you said above before I posted it (I didn't see it when I did - I was off in meme heaven).

AllAussieAdventures · 07/07/2020 09:20

I don't get over excited when people are rude about Australians/Australia.

Just nod and smile and feel a bit sorry for them because I am an Aussie and they are, well not. Grin Wink Wasn't it Bill Bailey who said Australians have a special smile for the British?

Is like how I feel about Melbourne. I bit sorry that they have a muddy brown river and we have a nice shiny harbour...good coffee though. Hopefully they will still have that.

Koalas are horrible by the way. They smell really bad, make a godawful noise and are just generally unpleasant. They look cute from afar and I don't want them to go extinct or anything. But it is all marketing.

eaglejulesk · 07/07/2020 09:21

That's okay @YetAnotherSpartacus.

I'm just so mad that someone in the UK, who doesn't know the first thing about Australia, is allowed to write such rubbish and when we try to tell them they have no clues they run to MN!

I'm not in Australia myself by the way - I live in NZ - but think I know enough about Australian life to be offended by such arrogance. Love koalas!

Nothing passive about the aggression on that!!

The agenda was clear, trying to keep alive the "Australia is so racist" trope that always comes out on threads about Australia.

You did nothing wrong, imo.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 07/07/2020 09:31

I just hope it is photo-shopped!

AllAussieAdventures · 07/07/2020 09:32

It is shopped. Koalas don't have canines.

AllAussieAdventures · 07/07/2020 09:35

I was once told on MN that I was a racist because I was Australian. When I mentioned in passing that I was not white I was told that I 'sounded white'. The irony of that statement was apparently completely lost on the maker.

TheGreatWave · 07/07/2020 10:55

AllAussieAdventures can I just thank you for your posts, you have been able to explain quite a lot of the ins and outs and pros and cons of the situation.

I think I am with a pp who said it will either work or will be a giant Petri dish, there is a reason hindsight is a beautiful thing.

We might have a muddy brown river but at least we don’t have bloody Ibises!

Haha, best post of the whole thread.... bin chickens ha
OneEpisode · 07/07/2020 15:11

People that are infected can infect others after 4 days. So a 5 day quarantine could protect lots of their neighbours. But those quarantined need to be supported, as PP said with deliveries of relevant essentials.

OneEpisode · 07/07/2020 15:13

So sorry, phone must have lost signal. Back to your bin chickens everyone..

AllAussieAdventures · 07/07/2020 22:10

No bin chickens?! Alright, point for Melbourne, they are bloody awful.

Seriously though. It is shit. I both want this over for Victoria and have everything crossed that we didn't take too long on the border. I think Gladys talked herself into a corner and let pride get in the way, dissapointing.

Let's be hopeful! We might have caught it. Spring will be here before we know it.

SnagAndChips · 08/07/2020 01:49

no need to worry any more. The whole of Vic is now in lockdown again.

69 cases emanated from those towers and testing is not complete.
Total new cases for 5m population of Melbourne is 181

LittleEntrepeneur · 08/07/2020 02:27

The news have just reported 143 new cases in VIC in the past 24 hours.

spottygymbag · 08/07/2020 06:24

And now at 75 cases linked to the towers with testing hopefully complete today.

Tezza1 · 08/07/2020 07:50

AllAussieAdventures I'm trying to casually work Russell Coight into the conversation, but can't. However, I now feel strangely compelled to go and do a YouTube search on him, so thanks for reminding me of his existence.

I might even have to sing "Six white boomers."

AllAussieAdventures · 08/07/2020 08:50

Haha. I introduced my children to Russell Coight recently.

It has aged well.

I was trying to explain the creeping horror that 'crouching by a water source' brings out in Australians of a certain age to them, I think created by either Crocodile Dundee or Leyland Brothers when I remembered the Big Coight.

Quality family viewing.

beingsunny · 08/07/2020 08:56

*totally misses point of thread but; There are no bin chickens in Melbourne ShockGrin

Having said that , I'm in sydney and hoping Gladys does roll back restrictions as she has suggested before this gets out of hand in NSW, I don't know if I can manage another schools closure ConfusedGin

AllAussieAdventures · 08/07/2020 09:04

My kids love being at home all day. They are happy I have said that these school holidays are basically back into lockdown for us. Older now though 15 and 9 and both little tech geeks.

They were smashing out their school work in the mornings and then (after a mandatory run around the block) being allowed to game all afternoon so that DH and I could work in peace. As far as they are concerned this is the perfect arrangement.

No point borrowing trouble. We can only do what we can do, which for my family means staying away from others as much as possible at the moment and seeing what happens.

Tezza1 · 08/07/2020 22:54

@AllAussieAdventures Quality family viewing I must agree. At their best, Working Dog Productions made some terrific things – with a uniquely Australian feel.

Anyway, sorry for the sideline, but thanks for the memories!
