Melbourne apartment towers complete lockdown

In Melbourne, Aus there are five tower blocks that will be put under complete lockdown for five days. I am all for being proactive about stopping the spread of coronavirus but this is madness. They are public housing so people on very low incomes for various reasons including elderly and disabled people, refugees and single parents. There will be police guarding each floor. No one will be able to leave for any reason. There have been many reports of bad hygiene practices for people quarantined in hotels and it makes me so angry that the government and dodgy contacted companies didn’t do their jobs properly and now the most vulnerable are paying the price. How will they be able to attend to all the individual needs of 3000 people? If I was stuck in a tiny apartment with my children with no time to prepare I would be furious. There were no armed guards for rich travellers returning home. I’m so angry and feel so bad for the residents. This is the beginning of a police state and once it’s happened it could happen again. If I was a resident I would be getting legal advice ASAP. I hope someone takes them to court.

I have no issues whatsoever with the enforced lockdown of these unit complexes. Public housing is statistically inhabited by people with poorer health who are likely to have a less positive outcome if they catch coronavirus. These units are very high density even by inner city Melbourne standards and the people living there are more likely to socialise with other families in the complex and to work in public facing jobs. It is easy to criticise this as some sort of discrimination but there is a factual basis for the decision.

I was trying to explain the creeping horror that 'crouching by a water source' brings out in Australians of a certain age to them, I think created by either Crocodile Dundee or Leyland Brothers

Huh? My kids, young adults through teens, have never seen Croc Dundee and are way too young for Leyland Bros (and Alby Mangels thank god), but they are extremely edgy even looking at others crouching over/near a water source. I recall once in some Aust film someone was doing likewise and they were shouting, 'no, no, no'. It's just common sense. They spent several months in remote communities up north when younger trailing me for work (and having a fantastic adventure) and it's something that is drummed into everyone, nothing at all to do with age. Also, don't automatically swim where locals do as often they happily accept what they perceive to be a low risk even though it's a possibility.

We are in Sydney and even so, mine are all uncomfortable around edges of rivers etc down here even though it's not logical.

AllAussieAdventures · 09/07/2020 07:27

My kids didn't have it (though they do now!), and I just couldn't put my finger on where it had come from.

God I had forgotten Alby Mangels! I think I was happier that way.

I'm up far North and even a deep puddle puts the fear into me.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 09/07/2020 09:34

^ I read that as that you came from Newcastle or Berwick ... Then I got it.

HoppingPavlova · 09/07/2020 09:58

Understood but tbh I'd rather take my chances in a deep puddle in an infested area than ever sit through one of those Alby Mangels travesties again. Being sincere.

StartupRepair · 09/07/2020 10:29

All but one of the towers are opening up again. So those people will join the rest of us in Melbourne on restrictions but able to leave if necessary.

Thanks for reminding me about Alby bloody Mangels... NOT! 🤢🤢🤢
Just heard that a particularly nauseating family from the same neighbourhood who are notorious for virtue-signalling all over social media, chose to pack their car up and drive to their mother’s holiday home as soon as the 24hr warning to lockdown was announced, which is in a tiny, beachside border town for a few days. Now one or more of them has since tested positive. Entitled, selfish wankers. It’s been on the news. They’ve chosen not to share their latest family dramas with the world, though!

@HoppingPavlova Alby Mangels – now there's a name from the past. I don't think I ever watched any of his stuff, but I remember all the bad puns based on his surname. Didn't he get a lot of his fame/notoriety from Judy Green (from Sale of the Century) and her bikini?

No, I’m sure Judy was not with him until the third instalment of the travesty. Which meant she knew the shit show she was getting involved in and was doing it for publicity. So ........

His other female companions in the previous films also wore small string bikini’s and non-existent shorts. I remember one where whoever she was left him (sensible). He told everyone via camera he was devastated and then in the same breath introduced the next girl he had met that same day/night (supposedly while in the middle of nowhere). He called her the same name as the other girl - so for example he called her Tracey (name of girl who just left), and she said her name was Sharon and he kept getting the name muddled. That was probably the least hilarious part of the whole shit show.

Then there was the (supposedly beloved) dog. He sacrificed that for airtime. It was shot.

The whole thing was a clusterfuck from beginning to end.

I'm in Melbourne but have no clue who the particularly nauseating family is.

Can you give a clue please? Smile

justilou1 · 10/07/2020 15:59

They’re not celebrities... As far as I know it’s been dealt with by the authorities, and they’ve clammed up for now. Silence is golden!

StartupRepair · 10/07/2020 22:53

A lot of people took the opportunity to slip away despite being explicitly told not to.
Really hope the numbers improve in Melbourne soon.

Tezza1 · 10/07/2020 22:55

HoppingPavlova By the sound of things I didn't miss much not watching the show. But he was omnipresent at one stage.. Being unaware of his existence was impossible. Was a bit like only watching a few Leyland Brothers things, but being able to sing the theme and know all the cliches associated with them.

His IMDb biography states that Alby M developed a revolutionary award winning new wheelchair that was used for decades. And that he's very big in conservation. And that he produced a web series as recently as 2013. As you can see, his biography on that site is probably a bit of a vanity piece.

I think that's happened all over the globe hasn't it 🤦

OffThePlanet · 13/07/2020 06:00

People were given time to leave before midnight on Wednesday, many would have been in Melbourne but live elsewhere. Those in the nine towers were given no notice.

Thanks. I looked back at my posts and I can say I disagree with myself!

Which is interesting because I often do!

Got as far as page 1 and 'five days isn't long.' Nope, you're in a small flat with young children, you were going to go out and do a shop because you haven't any food, formula or nappies but now there's a man with a gun outside stopping you from going out and you don't know for how long. But you'll be fine.

I have lots of family in Australia and I've visited a lot of times. I really didn't recognise that country or like what happened to it 2020-2021.

AreYouVeryAnti · 17/08/2023 20:23

Wow. I didn't know this had happened in 2020. Wonder if all the people who wished we could be more like Australia did.

Australia is just fine. Melbourne, too. Thanks.
