Melbourne apartment towers complete lockdown

Imtootired · 04/07/2020 15:30

In Melbourne, Aus there are five tower blocks that will be put under complete lockdown for five days. I am all for being proactive about stopping the spread of coronavirus but this is madness. They are public housing so people on very low incomes for various reasons including elderly and disabled people, refugees and single parents. There will be police guarding each floor. No one will be able to leave for any reason. There have been many reports of bad hygiene practices for people quarantined in hotels and it makes me so angry that the government and dodgy contacted companies didn’t do their jobs properly and now the most vulnerable are paying the price. How will they be able to attend to all the individual needs of 3000 people? If I was stuck in a tiny apartment with my children with no time to prepare I would be furious. There were no armed guards for rich travellers returning home. I’m so angry and feel so bad for the residents. This is the beginning of a police state and once it’s happened it could happen again. If I was a resident I would be getting legal advice ASAP. I hope someone takes them to court.

They have locked down these building - for 5 days - to effectively isolate those who may be or likely to be infected. They are systematically working through the buildings testing every resident.
It will take a few days hence the lockdown and hopefully ceasing any community transmission. Rather than wait for people to get sick they are trying to head off and cap the spread before it becomes a bigger issue than just Melbourne/Victoria.

Australia is doing a good job in track, trace and isolate. This outbreak is daunting because most other regions are covid free (aside from returning travellers).

^^^

This.

Though lost on the vociferous outside Australia who had fuck all to say about lockdowns in Wuhan, Spain, etc., etc.

Funny, that. Hmm

Bollss · 06/07/2020 08:38

@echt

I'm not uninformed there's no need to be so rude is there?

🐨

I think they should just isolate if they're ill. Not close all buildings and stick armed police outside

All police are armed. There is no need to call them armed place. That is a instance of your being ill-informed.

Though if all Australians are so aggressive I guess they're happy with that

🐨

You can send me as many passive aggressive koalas as you want. They're police. They're armed. Therefore they are armed police. Whether that's the norm or not it's unnecessary. It's a huge threat of death to anyone who tries to leave their home. It's cruel and unnecessary and if what pps say is true about the background of some of these people it must be very traumatic for them.

I strongly opposed them too. China are a dictatorship. They were never going to be kind were they? Do I think they're run by arseholes? Of course.

Spain treated it's dogs better than its children. I've lost all respect for them too and I've said it quite a few times.

FruitTingleFrizzante · 06/07/2020 08:40

Ahh pressed too soon.

Armed police argument is irrelevant- all police are armed. It's a common sight to pass a copper with a holstered gun at the servo, Maccas etc.
community health workers/ nurses/ Red Cross are also in these buildings, it's not like the riot squad went in pointing guns and welding doors.

AllAussieAdventures · 06/07/2020 08:40

I assume that is because the UK is now on its way 'out' of the situation echt and are now perhaps more relaxed about large case numbers and deaths.

We never really went in and there is no reason we have to.

I wasn't sure about lockdown at the start of this, but watching it unfold around the world I think it was the right strategy after all.

I am in NSW. I want that border closed for now but I also want every available resource thrown at getting this thing under control.

echt · 06/07/2020 08:48

How convenient that you can dispose of China without having posted about it but spend sooooooomuch time on Australia.

Spain treated it's dogs better than its children. I've lost all respect for them too and I've said it quite a few times

How so? Go on. Do tell.

I think it goes without saying that China have quite obviously been arseholes throughout. If they'd done everything right they wouldn't have let it spread to the rest of the world.

Dogs were allowed out in Spain. Children weren't. For months. I don't believe that's ok.

echt · 06/07/2020 08:50

Agree AllAussieAdventures, except that I think the UK is not out of and will pay big time, and quite soon.

Bollss · 06/07/2020 08:50

And I've posted a handful of times. It's hardly sooooooo much time but I guess nobody is allowed to criticize perfect Australia?

FruitTingleFrizzante · 06/07/2020 08:51

i think nsw agreeing to closing the border just goes to show how seriously they are taking this outbreak. It must hurt Gladys after all the grief she gave other states for shutting but they cannot compensate for human arrogance and idiocy in travelling whilst sick and spreading this fucker further. It also is very helpful in assisting with resource management- allowing for interstate health professionals to assist and let vic allocate energies where needed.

I think the UK will be in a similar state to the US soon... so much sniffing and judging of other countries without acknowledging the absolute embrassment of a civil response and shit show of a govt they've got leading them to the grave.... but yeah Aus has asked people to remain home (whilst being physically and financially supported) so they can be tested and supplied with appropriate health care and our hot coppers carry guns... yup we are the devil country incarnate....

AllAussieAdventures · 06/07/2020 08:51

So TrustTheGeneGenie, asymptomatic virus shedders within these towers? The plan?

echt · 06/07/2020 08:52

Post the links to the reasoning for this. I only have your word for it.

Well considering the WHO don't have any evidence that it happens I'd stick with isolate those who do have symptoms... And test everyone which they obviously are.

How will we end up like the us? We aren't free?

I absolutely acknowledge the government are utter shite, have completely fucked up, and likely will continue to. And no, I didn't and never have voted conservative.

Leading us to the grave though?

Get a grip.

AllAussieAdventures · 06/07/2020 08:57

I don't mind if you criticise Australia. I do it all the time.

I try not to criticise other cultures/countries too much personally as I am rarely in possession of enough facts to feel comfortable doing so.

I want our lives back. I want as many Aussies as possible, regardless of their socioeconomic situation, their race, their countries of origin, their current location to be able to get back to their lives as soon as possible.

My personal risk profile (and that of the people I really care about) is pretty low for coronavirus. But I followed the lockdown when it was asked of me because I thought it was probably the right thing to do. I bristled at the imposition on my civil liberties but it worked!

I don't know if this is the right thing to do, but I don't have any better suggestions.

MRex · 06/07/2020 08:58

Interesting that you want to argue, yet haven't addressed my point about Leicester. The UK locked an area back down too, but with no guns, no police literally on front doors, and people can still get their basics at the supermarket and pharmacy. Countries choose methods that suit their population; this militarised option clearly suits Australia, but in the UK our methods are lighter touch. Both methods will work, both have different downsides. It's work acknowledging that more than one method exists and that there are downsides to either approach.

differentnameforthis · 06/07/2020 08:59

@TrustTheGeneGenie Just today, someone tried to leave their home in the flats.

They bit a police officer. They weren't shot because the police are trained not to use their guns needlessly.

You may not trust your police with guns, please don't insinuate that ours cannot be trusted either.

Bollss · 06/07/2020 08:59

I've followed the rules too but it doesn't mean I agree with them, think they are right, fair or necessary.

echt · 06/07/2020 08:59

My reasoning is that it happened

Lack of reasoning 101.

I don't trust anyone with a gun. 99% of people obviously are trustworthy but it only takes one police officer to have a bad day and over react. You can't say with confidence that no Australian police officer would ever do that because you just don't know.

passive aggressive koalas

For some reason I love the idea of a passive aggressive koala. Yeah, I'm going to sit up in this tree looking like a huggable teddy-bear and completely ignoring you, human.

AllAussieAdventures · 06/07/2020 09:06

Merx, in my opinion, the 'lighter touch' comes with an unacceptably high death count.

I guess time will tell.
