The holiday letting agent I booked with last year for a self catering holiday let (not caravan site, private house on its own) has emailed saying government have said all going ahead With self catering from the 4th July and the rest of the monies are due now. Already paid over £600 before corona and I won’t get that back unless they can relet. Now have to pay almost another 1k I’m going and taking my own food with me. Big garden as opposed to our tiny one and I have 3 young kids. Cornish people on here are up in arms about visitors which I get with fewer hospitals but you better get ready because if the government say it’s allowed and people have paid, they will come! Just hoping that the cases are further down by aug because it looks like it’s happening

Hope you are not with Sykes OP

I am one of the thousands promised money back for holidays they cancelled and still haven’t seen a penny.

We are now being told our contract is with the owner and to sue them if we want a refund.

DartmoorChef · 15/06/2020 13:55

I work in houses that are rented out for over 10k a week in Devon and Cornwall. 1k is not at all unusual.

Cornishandnotaprick · 15/06/2020 14:00

@Time2change2 they sound quite good! Really do hope you get to have your holiday and have a really nice time.

Everyone needs a break at the moment! And if you need any advice about nice beaches - just ask Flowers x

Mrsjayy · 15/06/2020 14:00

Holiday lettings is where I should be obviously 😲

PhilCornwall1 · 15/06/2020 14:01

! I would never have a bbq on the beach, play loud music or poo anywhere!

Blimey!! Depending on where you are going you won't fit in. I can think of several places where the "locals" do that daily!! Grin

For me, I'd be buggering off to the Yorkshire Dales if I could. Its just what I need at the moment.

Time2change2 · 15/06/2020 14:11

@Cornishandnotaprick thank you so much. I will remember that! I will be a bit nervous coming at first that’s for sure. Just hoping to keep
Ourselves to ourselves and see something different other than our house and small garden! I don’t think we would be eating out in any case even if it were normal times - maybe a takeaway once or twice. I tend to keep the kids out of local shops as much as possible- as much as I love all the nick nack shops the kids are a nightmare and I can’t relax! So just beached, picnics and walks in a new part of the country is all we require!

@Time2change2 well there’s lots of woods / forests with nature trails.

Coastal walks are also spectacular if you’re near that :) especially ones near mining areas.

Some National Trust places are reopening with prebookable slots too!

We’ve had lots of takeaway so there’s definitely plenty open. You might need to preorder your fish and chips and collect at a specific slot. You’ll definitely have a nice time.

I think BBQs on the beach are fine - just remember about hot sand and bare feet Smile

The sea is quite warm too!

Cornishandnotaprick · 15/06/2020 14:23

And crabbing depending on the age of the kids! Grin

Mummypig2020 · 15/06/2020 14:24

We paid £1200 for our holiday to cornwall. No way could we go abroad as a family 5 for that much.

StarScream22 · 15/06/2020 14:31

I live in cornwall. There’s fuck all to do here so good luck!

Peterbishopssarcasticsmile · 15/06/2020 14:43

YANBU to go
YABU to start a thread just to smugly rub it in th faces of people who are worried about the effect of tourism on their family and community in the midst of a pandemic

I hope you have a nice time when you go and don't face any hostility

ohthegoats · 15/06/2020 14:49

I have a second home in Cornwall, July 4th can't come soon enough. Garden out of control, but visitors to the village getting spat on even.

Just an excuse to have a pop at tourists like they've been doing quietly for years. But then they also need them to pay their wages. Shame.

Time2change2 · 15/06/2020 15:02

@ohthegoats
And this is what I am talking about. Visitors have helped make the whole region what it is. Those who booked and paid before the virus are not being offered their money back currently. And yet are getting spat on. Is this still going to continue after the 4th when the government have said it’s allowed to go? Most families will be going with just their nuclear family and trying to have a nice time without bothering anyone. If anyone spits at me or my family they are going to know about it

I've been going to the same place for 40 years. There has always been a them and us feel to it all. My godparents live in the village, we've got friends we've known for 40 years there too, and it's still them and us. We get the piss taken in the pub the whole time. I mean, I live in a tourist place too, and tourists are irritating... but here wouldn't be like this without them. Same for Cornwall - you're a tourist destination, I'm really sorry but tough.

A friend near Padstow says that where she is, medical key workers who were living isolated from their families in AirBnB places (in order to actually do their jobs), were getting shouted at and reported. So, you know....

Bluewarbler27 · 15/06/2020 15:44

Hope you have a lovely time! We have a holiday home, the locals there are the same. It’s an island and I think they would love to block the bridge off! Tough because I’ll be there in July!

MamaFirst · 15/06/2020 15:52

I don't think you sound angry or unreasonably snipey. I live in a tourist location and I see locals expressing much the same distain for tourists. Its extremely short sited and arrogant imo, these places thrive BECAUSE of tourists. When this is all over, these businesses and locals might well regret their behaviour.

MamaFirst · 15/06/2020 15:54

We e just booked a holiday to Norfolk on the 4th July. Can’t wait!!’

TheAdventuresoftheWishingChair · 15/06/2020 15:59

There’s fuck all to do here so good luck!

Yeah, Cornwall definitely doesn't have miles of beautiful walking tracks and stunning beaches does it? Plus in self-catering, it's the change of scenery isn't it? A new sofa to lounge on and read good novels, a table with a new view to play a board game on. Different places locally to get a lovely takeaway from.

Op have a lovely time. I'm very jealous.

Mummypig2020 · 15/06/2020 16:08

Where abouts in Cornwall are you going? Xx

transformandriseup · 15/06/2020 16:10

Oooh hopefully the same for who we have booked with in Dorset! We are set to go July 18th and I've been worried we won't be able to.

I hope you have a lovely time!

Yankathebear · 15/06/2020 16:26

@Time2change2

It’s standard money for a house for a family of 5 with a garden and hot tub? Booked last year so already paid quite a bit. I’m sure there are many people from Cornwall who will be welcoming tourists and their money which has been used over generations to help make that part of the country so lovely to live in- but where are those people in MN? I sure haven’t seen anyone? To those who say we won’t be welcomed- what you going to do? Spit at my family on the street? Shout at us? Scratch my car with keys? Throw rotten eggs at my holiday let? Arrive at night with pitchforks and flaming torches? Throw a bucket of water on my picnic in an open space? Would love to know I know I sound angry but I am just frustrated I guess
I’ve posted repeatedly on these threads that we aren’t all like the media is portraying us! I live in a touristy bit of Cornwall and really am not bothered either way! I would do the same in your shoes! We aren’t all spitting and shouting at holiday makers. Some of us are quit nice! Hope you have a lovely holiday.
