The holiday letting agent I booked with last year for a self catering holiday let (not caravan site, private house on its own) has emailed saying government have said all going ahead With self catering from the 4th July and the rest of the monies are due now. Already paid over £600 before corona and I won’t get that back unless they can relet. Now have to pay almost another 1k I’m going and taking my own food with me. Big garden as opposed to our tiny one and I have 3 young kids. Cornish people on here are up in arms about visitors which I get with fewer hospitals but you better get ready because if the government say it’s allowed and people have paid, they will come! Just hoping that the cases are further down by aug because it looks like it’s happening

If anyone is reading this thread and coming down on holiday and staying near Newquay - If you get bored of the beaches try a nature trail at Porth Reservoir. It’s actually beautiful. Carpark is open.

The ice cream parlours in Perranporth and Newquay are open too and just allowing one member from each family to go in and order. So just know this before you go - really tasty and worth waiting for :)

Holywell beach and Crantock are both huge and have beautiful shells to collect (national trust car parks). The poppies are out on the cliffs at Polly Joke and look absolutely amazing! Polly Joke is a cash only carpark.

If it’s raining then park up at Pentire and do some storm watching. great views up and down the coast.

And the walk from Holywell to Perranporth is absolutely amazing and very interesting.

If in doubt I’m sure McDonalds is open :)

A nice drive down to St Agnes and you’ll see a hill - this is called St Agnes Beacon. You can park nearby & walk to the top of St Agnes Beacon - you can see so much and there’s a little plimth with a view point diagram so you can see what you’re looking at. Also near there is Wheal Coates which is absolutely stunning on a sunny evening.

Local tasty bakeries are Yummy Scrummy, Da Bara and Baker Toms. I think they do delivery so could be useful!

I hope anyone reading this and coming on holiday has a great time Flowers Smile

I love the lakes. We live About 85 miles from Pooley bridge. We thought we’d take advantage of the nice quiet roads and had a pop over on the last bank holiday
Was fabulous. Then up to the stone circle at Castlerigg which we weren’t able to do on our last visit In February as it was so muddy And then finally a walk along Derwentwater from keswick theatre side

Sadly no one made any money from us as nothing was open but would’ve quite happily stayed over.
We stayed at the Beatrix potter hotel in Windermere n feb. Well recommend
Where are you staying?

Cornish, sounds like my idea of heaven. The 8 hour drive though, argh, not sure about that
Lots to do on our north east beaches and our car parks are open.
The beach bar has set up a sd seating area
Must go and check it out.

Gosh, am shocked at how the locals in Cornwall are behaving.
What on Earth is the matter with people?
I really wonder why a pp has been going for 40 years If they’ve been made to feel so unwelcome.
I had various holiday homes, static caravanS, tourers and a cottage in N Yorks for a Period spanning 40 years ( except for 10 years in the middle when the children didn’t want to come anymore so we had homes in Orlando and Brittany) and we’ve always been well received in all homes and all countries.

I think I’d be voting with my feet pp and spending my cash where I was more welcome.
My dd was round yesterday and showed me a beautiful three story home just two minutes walk from the beacH. A turn key property for £95k
A steal.
Tempted to buy it myself and let it out as a holiday let...I should be able to ask £500 per week.
You’d all be welcome 👍

Does anybody know if Boscastle and Tintagle are “open”?

Report
Ihaventgottimeforthis · 16/06/2020 11:57

Tintagel Castle (and the bridge I'm assuming) will open on 4th July, timed tickets etc.
Boscastle is there, as always - don't have any specific info on any pubs/cafes opening up but I'm sure there will be.

We booked a holiday to Northumberland in January, and just paid the balance now. We will be careful, but decided to chance it and go rather than forego deposit. Off in four weeks time.

We'll be paying the balance on our holiday home this week. Planning to go if we can! We'll be social distancing and just happy for a change of scene regardless.

I hope anyone reading this and coming on holiday has a great time!!!

I had to cancel my yearly holiday to Dorset during lockdown. The kids were gutted at the time but understood why we couldn't go (they're only young). Your comments above have got me thinking of where to book next when it's OK to do so, and this sounds like heaven.

Think attitudes in Cornwall will change as tonight on the news it was reported that 2 hotels in Newquay were closing down and making all staff redundant. Newquay zoo also said it would have to close down if it doesn’t get sufficient numbers visiting.

Ah, so smug and gloaty. Don't forget it works both ways. Not only could you take the virus down to Cornwall, but with the nation descending, you could also pick it up there and take it home with you.

I’m in Cornwall and don’t mind if you come or not - I live in a non touristy area no one wants to visit anyway!

Hope it doesn’t rain for you. The only thing to do if it does is go shopping, which will be hell with three kids.

Intastellaburst · 16/06/2020 23:11

Sorry for sounding grumpy above -I’m very tired. Genuinely hope you enjoy what will be a well deserved holiday after lockdown with three kids. Not all of us here are anti tourists.

Cornishandnotaprick your post has made me long for a camping trip to Watergate bay! Unfortunately I won't be getting any time off work for the forseeable future even though my now adult kids have asked if we can go camping like we used to. Those fortnights of shorts and wellies and daily rainfall where we couldn't afford the extortionate theme park type places so walked for miles on the coastal paths and cycled on the Camel trail Grin. We managed to swim in the sea every day though whatever the weather - even if it was only for five minutes followed by hot chocolate once dressed.

One of the reasons people here are not happy is that just after the first lockdown lifted, people turned up in huge droves and many were not the usual sort of people who come to Cornwall for a nice rural holiday. There were people here who just wanted to get blind drunk and be antisocial to the max. There was a definite shift in how people behaved after the lockdown, to describe it I would have to say many people were "belligerent" about having "fun"... going through the motions but doing it an a rather aggressive way.

When the lockdown was announced again there was a palpable sense of relief in my village because the locals knew they'd be getting a break from it. It really was ridiculous this year the amount of people who came. If I had come here for a holiday I'd have probably gone home because the last thing I want when I'm on holiday is to be sitting in the middle of a heaving crowd of people desperately trying to holiday as hard as they can.

I came down in July, not through choice I add but because my elderly DF lives there and wasn't coping so well so we stayed in our touring caravan, it wasn't that packed and I didn't see a load of drunk people. We normally visit him out of season but couldn't because of the lockdown and wondered what it would be like there in July especially as some of the locals are like CornishArtist and not so welcoming but it wasn't too bad.

You seem to really dislike the Cornish, OP. I wonder why you want to come here at all.

( Around 12% of Cornwall's "gdp" is from tourism...the vast majority is from agriculture. We're not as dependent on you as you like to think!)

Also, this thread is from June... why is it being revived now? Not being snarky. Genuinely curious!
