The holiday letting agent I booked with last year for a self catering holiday let (not caravan site, private house on its own) has emailed saying government have said all going ahead With self catering from the 4th July and the rest of the monies are due now. Already paid over £600 before corona and I won’t get that back unless they can relet. Now have to pay almost another 1k I’m going and taking my own food with me. Big garden as opposed to our tiny one and I have 3 young kids. Cornish people on here are up in arms about visitors which I get with fewer hospitals but you better get ready because if the government say it’s allowed and people have paid, they will come! Just hoping that the cases are further down by aug because it looks like it’s happening

I hope that you're able to holiday in a safe way.
If anyone makes you feel unwelcome please try and remember it's because they are scared, not because they're unreasonable and dont want your money.

My 85 year old grandfather lives in Cornwall. He absolutely should be shielding, but his mind is wandering and he can't comprehend the risks. I'm trying to balance my concern for him with the fact that Cornwall is a tourist destination and they need money from the holiday seasons.
It's not an easy time for anyone at the moment. I do think UK based, self catering, social distanced holidays are the best kind of holiday you could have.

Wasail locals in my area aren't really doing a stand-out job of social distancing at the moment...

is it definitely confirmed that it will be open on 4th, if not will you be able to get your money back?

I have noticed that people on holiday seem to abandon all the rules of their normal lives, I get that your on holiday and want to relax but the rules still apply

This. I've noticed that this is also true of day-visitors too. Visitors to our local parks have left an astonishing amount of rubbish, and set several fires.

I don't understand why visitors to the holiday destinations are so ugly in their response to the caution expressed by the communities there

^^This.

You sound like the kind of arrogant, superior visitor who gives the many other lovely ones a bad name, OP. Devon and Cornwall aren’t theme parks staffed by locals who shuffle around doing your bidding (I once had a visitor shout at me because a local shop was shut even though I had absolutely nothing to do with the shop 🙄 ).

You might also like to remember that our R number is estimated as 1.1 so there’s the possibility of a local lockdown anyway.

At the moment, nothing much is open at all here anyway. Lifeguard cover is minimal so we’re being advised not to go in the sea. Nothing touristy is open. Toilets are still shut.

I’m sure the Tourist Board is keen to get visitors back BUT only when it’s safe and in a controlled way.

Cornwall needs tourism it's a beautiful part of our country but on the flip side tourists can be an absolute nightmare! No idea how to reverse in our country lanes, bloody caravans for miles on roads that we usually nip along happily. It's great but also a disruption. Roll on October! Have a lovely holiday though I hope you're going somewhere nice.

Cornwall gets it in the neck.
I live near the South coast. Locals are a mix of retirees who vehemently want lockdown to continue for bloody ever and people who actually make a living from tourism and are desperate to 're open.

I think the main worry is that if a lot of tourists come & Cornwall then gets a 2nd wave of the virus, the main hospital will go under. There are only 10 ICU beds so it’s terribly overstretched at the best of times. I live in mid Cornwall & we have so far had one of the lowest rates. I chose to stay off work ( not tourism related) but actually I could have gone in during lockdown - the time I will probably need to stay off could be over the summer but ironically I am going back very soon. So difficult to know what to do for the best. I sympathise with people like OP who have paid a certain amount upfront & are looking forward to their holiday but it could all just explode. And unfortunately you have the idiots who believe the rules don’t apply to them so have been coming down when they weren’t supposed to, not social distancing etc. Some locals are equally irresponsible.

I live in a zone 2 London borough and Dsis lives in Cornwall, in a very touristy area. I actually looked up deaths on the covid postcode thing and there has been 5 deaths in my area, but 9 deaths in Dsis area. So really you are potentially risking yourself more by going there, than posing a risk to the Cornish! I do get the point re hospitals, having grown up there myself. It's really dependant on whether we're going to get this second wave or not and it seems no one can predict that.

Zero fucks given if you do come.

There are better places to go on holiday. There's fuck all to down here anyway. Enjoy. Smile

OP isn't coming now- she is coming in 3 weeks time when it is expected overnight stays and holiday let's will be permitted. If so, she will be doing absolutely nothing wrong.
I'm am planning the same thing in Scotland albeit 3 weeks later. This has brought it the worse in some people.

We will go on our holiday to Cornwall, if allowed. We can not afford to write off several thousand pounds when others will not - truly unfair. We will behave responsibly, as we have done at home, and have home cooked meals, take aways, social distance in parks and beaches, and keep ourselves to ourselves. I understand some people cannot be trusted to do that but we really can only lead by example.

Lots of luxury properties down here cost a few thousand - depends on facilities, size, location etc.

However at the other end of the scale there are also campsites where you can stay for around a hundred pounds for a week.

It really depends on the kind of holiday someone is after.

There is, I can think of one place not far from me, but I'm staggered people would want to spend that down here to be honest.

Thanks to everyone who has commented that we will be welcome if we behave. I can assure you that in real life I am not arrogant - sorry for sounding like it, I am just annoyed that we have been told to pay yet seeming are not going to be welcomed.
When we come, we will of course observe all rules re social distancing. We are a normal law abiding family who have consideration for others and expect others to do the same! I would never have a bbq on the beach, play loud music or poo anywhere! Also don’t care is everything is closed unless you can close of the beach and the countryside, we will be there!

Also the holiday company have said that if self catering is not allowed to open from the 4th July, we will get a full refund which is fine

A family member rents a house out for £1000 a week in the summer and is no where near any of the beaches so I can believe what the OP and others are paying.
