Just heard an ice cream van. How does that work, then?

Suburban streets. Not sure how social distancing is possible with them? How would you buy an ice cream safely?? Would you be happy accepting an ice cream off them knowing they will have touched money from various people? How would a cone work where you eat where has been touched? How do you know they're washing their hands between customers?

Am I being overcautious thinking surely they can't be safe?

To be honest I have heard the jingle of the ice cream van and assumed it was more to do with drugs than ice creams

Selfsettling3 · 15/05/2020 17:04

I imagine as safe a cafes doing take away. No safe in my opinion but allowed.

kingkuta · 15/05/2020 17:05

We had one round yesterday. It was pre-order only by phone or online, payment by card and orders left at your front door.

Batshittery · 15/05/2020 17:05

The last time I had an ice cream, the server picked the cone up with a bit of tissue/napkin tied around the bottom of the cone. You can stand 2 metres from the person in front of you. I don't see a problem with it.

Batshittery · 15/05/2020 17:06

And surely they would put a glove on to handle money?

MunchMunch · 15/05/2020 17:07

Ours has never stopped coming round. We haven't and won't buy anything and I didn't even think about the points you've raised but yes, how does it work?!

TARSCOUT · 15/05/2020 17:08

Had that conversation yesterday re selling drugs 😀

TJH130 · 15/05/2020 17:08

Usually Diesel propulsion and internal combustion engine . Some may be petrol though unlikely

Megan2018 · 15/05/2020 17:10

I imagine the same as the local chip van - you go up to order but stand back more than normal, pay by contactless (no cash), step back until order ready then collect. It’s not perfect but works ok. No different to a shop really.

PumpkinP · 15/05/2020 17:11

Seen parents buying their kids one, I was surprised tbh. I wouldn’t buy one personally.

Hairydilemma · 15/05/2020 17:11

Ice cream vans sell drugs?! Shock. Is this a thing?

It was a thing late 80s/early 90s

inwood · 15/05/2020 17:15

Ours is doing delivery for a £10 minimum order. Ice cream that is, not sure about the drugs Grin

Hairydilemma · 15/05/2020 17:16

Well that clearly passed me by!

ForeverBubblegum · 15/05/2020 17:17

The one near us has a bucket of disinfectant (I assume, some type of liquid) and you can drop in correct change. One advantage of the change to plastic notes.

They don't do the cones, just pre-pack ice lollies etc.

DominaShantotto · 15/05/2020 17:17

Ours has turned into a mobile essentials shop for less mobile people who can't get out to supermarkets without using public transport. I believe she still uses the jingle so you know when she's coming by.

But carry on being outraged.

youkiddingme · 15/05/2020 17:20

I don't see how a glove to handle money would help unless they change it between every customer? And surely they will handle the tissue anyway before wrapping it around the cone? Never heard of one taking card payment and leaving on the doorstep though.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 15/05/2020 17:21

There was one at the beach earlier

Didnt seem very busy

SunshineCake · 15/05/2020 17:23

We've just had it near us too

hoodathunkit · 15/05/2020 17:24

At least they no longer sell "penny licks"

Utterlydespairing · 15/05/2020 17:25

It’s social distancing where possible

Wtfdidwedo · 15/05/2020 17:26

Ours started back up about two weeks ago. I bought a 99 from him and I haven't dropped dead yet. It was great as well.

Dadnotamum72 · 15/05/2020 17:26

Some road side burger vans have been running all through, not much different really, stand back 2 metres shout your order but still have to get a little to close to pay.

Hairydilemma · 15/05/2020 17:27

The ones near us are just doing pre-paid orders for delivery I think (I assume ice cream rather than drugs although with my new-found knowledge I am suspicious...)

Quite a few companies round here have been delivering ice cream and I think the ice cream vans are now getting back in on the action.

TARSCOUT · 15/05/2020 17:29

@hairydilemma maybe just Scotland 🤣🤣🤣
