Just heard an ice cream van. How does that work, then?

Suburban streets. Not sure how social distancing is possible with them? How would you buy an ice cream safely?? Would you be happy accepting an ice cream off them knowing they will have touched money from various people? How would a cone work where you eat where has been touched? How do you know they're washing their hands between customers?

Am I being overcautious thinking surely they can't be safe?

We have a local one doing precooked deliveries.

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 15/05/2020 17:29

Booked not cooked. Autocorrect has got me today.

NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 15/05/2020 17:30

I can hear an ice-cream van as I am reading this. I'm sure there will be some who will buy but I wouldn't.

Peanut55 · 15/05/2020 17:32

Our ice cream lady wears a mask. Wears gloves. Correct change goes into a Tupperware tub that's handed out to you but she also takes contactless payments.

She has hand sanitiser on her counter and signs asking people to keep to social distance rules.

B&Q is open. Supermarkets are open (where fresh fruit and veg are out in the open, these have been handled!) Costa drive through is open, kfc drive through is open.

Unfortunately, ice cream vans can only work part of the year , they need income too.

If the ice cream van being out is your biggest issue, think yourself very lucky.

Connie222 · 15/05/2020 17:33

I hear one everyday here.

(I was assuming drugs too 😂)

Peanut55 · 15/05/2020 17:34

Burger vans have been open for weeks around here! Some of those working in there aren't wearing gloves or masks.

Chloemol · 15/05/2020 17:44

Ones our way are selling veg, milk etc not ice reams

ProfYaffle · 15/05/2020 17:45

Another one here with a local ice cream van that's turned itself into a shop delivering food.

ABucketOfShells · 15/05/2020 17:48

Not any different to chip shops or other takeaways being open is it?

MrsSiriusBlack1 · 15/05/2020 17:49

We had one round last week, he did great business! Had mask on and washed his hands after each transaction. We haven’t keeled over yet Grin

ABucketOfShells · 15/05/2020 17:50

However, if in doubt, just remember not to ask for a smartie with the 99😁

Dancingalong · 15/05/2020 17:50

The ice cream van comes round everyday by us and I was really dubious for a while. However ours wears gloves, has put up a Perspex screen with a small opening to hand the ice cream over and takes contactless card payments. I gave in last week and the kids and I had one.....we’re all still here. 🍦

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 15/05/2020 17:51

Ahh anyone on here from Caerphilly who remembers Brian the ice cream van? Pretty sure he didn't even bother selling ice cream as a front for the drugs operation Grin

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 15/05/2020 17:54

One came round here earlier. A group of children came dashing round from the next street. From multiple families (we know them from school) and no social distancing was happening. Their lookout I guess.

Samtsirch · 15/05/2020 17:55

We have an ice cream van which comes around regularly.
I was completely unaware of the drugs connection though!
Next time I will ask for a 99 and some “ sh&t hot ket “
😆

WorraLiberty · 15/05/2020 17:56

Mine just sells ice lollies and cold drinks.

It has a sign in the window reminding people about the 2 metre queuing rule.

Mydoglicksplates · 15/05/2020 17:57

Drugs and porn, OK probably not porn in the internet age but if you asked for a 69 when I was a kid you got a video. Grin

implantsandaDyson · 15/05/2020 18:07

Ours started coming round about 10 days ago - its correct change only, or he doesn't give out change. There's a plastic box for people to throw their money in and he uses a napkin around each cone. He has an icecream holder that he puts the cones into and you lift them from it. Limited menu no sprinkles, marshmallows etc. People stay well spaced in the queue, it's been nice. Although he's the poke man where we live Grin. We used to buy single cigarettes from the van years ago.

1forAll74 · 15/05/2020 18:17

You have to get in touch with Boris, don't think he has mentioned any ice cream vans rules. He does not get ice cream vans in Downing street.

Healthyandhappy · 15/05/2020 18:20

Ours has been for last 3 days. He wears a mask and gloves and ppl stay 2m apart from him.and others pretty simple :)

bonbonours · 15/05/2020 18:28

It's no different to the many other types of food that are being sold as takeaways. I personally don't see how fish and chips, curry, cakes etc are safe if someone else made it and packaged it. Locally our Age UK asked for people to donate home baked cakes to care homes for VE day. Nobody seemed to worry that any Tom Dick or Harry with no food hygiene, gloves or mask might be sneezing all over these cakes.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 15/05/2020 18:32

@DominaShantotto But carry on being outraged.

Who is outraged? I can't see any sign of anyone huffing and puffing except you. I posted cos it's the first time i've heard it round here for ages so wondered how the distancing would work. I'm not aware of any doing other food deliveries apart from ice cream so thankyou for that information, I didn't know they did that.

All the food delivery places round here have websites stating what precautions they take to minimise risk. I didn't think it would be possible to google a particular ice cream van to find out what they do, but I haven't tried to. I just wanted to know from someone who had bought an ice cream recently what the procedure was.

Laughing at the drugs thing. Not sure that actually does go on outside of the TV programme Shamless but anyway....

Do you live up Stoops though, op? That's the question

Aria20 · 15/05/2020 18:47

I must naive as I never knew about the drugs either lol.

AnnaNimmity · 15/05/2020 19:15

drugs really? How does that work? You ask for a cone and score? (a gram)? (an 1/8th) (or whatever the correct phrase might be...)

We've had one every day for around 2 weeks - it stops outside my house twice in the afternoon. Perhaps it's dropping off drugs? I haven't let my children go out, although they're desperate. I have no idea how this is allowed in lockdown at all.
