Just heard an ice cream van. How does that work, then?

Suburban streets. Not sure how social distancing is possible with them? How would you buy an ice cream safely?? Would you be happy accepting an ice cream off them knowing they will have touched money from various people? How would a cone work where you eat where has been touched? How do you know they're washing their hands between customers?

Am I being overcautious thinking surely they can't be safe?

I bought one last weekend. Social distancing queue, cornetto in a wrapper with the wrapper disposed and hands washed after. Paid contactless, ice cream man had a mask on, was happy that it was as safe as the supermarket or a cafe take away.

The one around here is card only payment, most of them are in wrappers these days and the actual ice cream comes straight out of the machine. The cones had little cardboard packet bits on the bottom so he can put them on when they're stacked, only touching the outside and people can take them off if they please. Queueing outside is ideal, and I don't see how it's riskier than any other takeaway. I suppose it is a bit too morale boosting for the moment and we are supposed to all be miserable.

Haha. Don't live too far away from Caerphilly Jesus but definitely remember an ice cream van in my area selling drugs. The owner was prosecuted and the story was in the Merthyr Express Grin

@30daysoflight shame, we could do with him right now #keyworkerhero Grin

Our fish and chip van is still coming round on a Friday night so guessing it works the same way as that.

Peanut55 · 15/05/2020 19:56

Can't check their website?

They are monitored very closely by the council and I am sure they are well aware of the risks.

Mine has their latest infection / virus control certificate on display.

But it does come down to this, if you don't want one.. don't buy one. And move on.

Pre order only here and pay by phone.

yearinyearout · 15/05/2020 20:22

Our local one has been doing the rounds, he had his wife handling the money and he served the ice creams apparently, the local Facebook page has been arguing about it all day.

Nquartz · 15/05/2020 20:24

Ours is out selling pre-made ice cream in tubs, loo roll, bread, milk, cleaning stuff, frozen food and other stuff for those who can't get to the shops easily or dont want to go. No kids allowed, keeping apart in the queue & contactless payment. I think it's a great idea!

rawlikesushi · 15/05/2020 21:24

Lots of food deliveries happening here - almost all local pubs and restaurants are offering takeaways for collection or delivery, and the milkman is still delivering lots of produce.

So I suppose the ice cream van is the same - stringent hygiene, queueing 2m apart, contactless or correct change.

At my last house, there was an ice cream van that came into the street every day, including 10pm in December. My next door neighbour really liked "ice cream".

vera99 · 15/05/2020 22:48

How else are we expected to get our drugs if the icey can't do his rounds...

GoatyGoatyMingeMinge · 15/05/2020 22:53

We had one! Grin

If you don't think it's safe don't buy I've cream
