DH intensive care consultant. Many recoveries, including a nice man who my DH had advised to phone his wife before being ventilated. I asked about him every day!

55 patients at peak. 11 now.

BakedCam · 13/05/2020 15:08

Husband was admitted with chest pains. Tested positive. Discharged with antibiotics for chest infection. Isolated for 14 days to be on safe side with me. He is 61 and has asthma, heart disease, COPD. Fully recovered.

RhymingRabbit3 · 13/05/2020 15:09

SIL is heavily pregnant and had it (confirmed by testing). Had a few rough days in bed but fine now.

wordgirl · 13/05/2020 15:13

My 91-year-old MIL contracted the virus while in hospital (tested positive). Given her age and the fact that she was in very poor health we thought that would be the end for her. It now appears all she had was a bit of a cough and a temperature. She’s still poorly with all her other problems but has recovered from the virus.

SummerHouse · 13/05/2020 15:16

This is a lovely thread. A breath of fresh air.

iamapixie · 13/05/2020 15:22

There have been quite a number of stories of very elderly people recovering - I think it's still something like an 80% recovery rate even in the over 80s, though the stats vary -. I think the very old are made of pretty stern stuff!

Thighmageddon · 13/05/2020 15:27

Even though I don't do the Thursday evening clap, I have been watching videos of those recovered and being clapped out of the hospital.

Every single one makes my eyes well up.

screamer1 · 13/05/2020 15:35

My 94 year old gran came out of hospital last week having tested positive, and been in hospital on oxygen for 2.5 weeks.

She celebrated her birthday yesterday.

I watched a program last night that showed a kidney transplant patient being in ICU after contracting the virus....he survived, as did the elderly man and 2 nurses that were also featured.

I wonder about these very elderly is there something that got them to such an age which also got them through having the virus? Some genetics / immune response perhaps...

although even at older age ranges the odds are still in general in their favour

My mum is late 50s and has recovered after probably catching it at work in a hospital. She had a cough and was very fatigued but did not need medical attention.

Thighmageddon · 13/05/2020 15:42

trapped the first episode of the specials of a Hospital was on Monday night. They're available on iplayer I think.

I've watched all series of the programme but this weeks were tear jerkers.

MP Nadine Dorris' mother (84) recovered quickly after having mild symptoms

"Despite the fact she has survived polio and heart surgery, her mother is not in the best of health and later tested positive, but with much milder symptoms"

My husbands Nan had it, caught whilst in hospital for another reason (she is almost 90 and not in good health generally), was only tested as a matter of course and test showed positive..3 or so weeks on, no symptoms whatsoever.

TeacupDrama · 13/05/2020 16:54

this is so true; all the indications are that even though most of the people that die are elderly and have underlying conditions the fact is even with both between 80-85% recovered over the age of 80 and a similar % with 2+ co-morbidities
while some die sadly like has happened from time immemorial; even the most vulnerable have a higher chance of recovering than succumbing
