Disgusted at VE celebrations

I absolutely cannot believe what went on last night in this country.

The government should never have encouraged this nonsense and instead should have firmly nipped the idea of celebration completely in the bud.

Absent Boris should have never implied lockdown will be eased on Monday a couple of days before a fucking sunny VE Day bank holiday when we still have 5,000 plus new cases every day.

It isn't rocket science.

I am absolutely appalled.

meh

runrunrunrunt · 09/05/2020 11:30

I wonder how people who weren't able to attend loved one's funerals felt watching the street parties or reading about them now.

There was a post on in FB this morning from an A&E nurse in our local hospital who said that all day yesterday they had drunken head injuries and broken limbs.

She was utterly disgusted as you can imagine and said that it felt like they’d gone back to square one.

She felt particularly that people shouldn’t bother clapping for them on Thursday as the feeling in department was that nobody wanted it as it wasn’t being taken serious anyway.

BovaryX · 09/05/2020 11:32

^That’s not a timeframe as such. That’s a criterion. So if it is still at 0.9 in 6 months time we stay locked down even if it means we can’t fund the NHS because there’s been economic meltdown?
Lockdown is finite, whatever the numbers are, or it ends up doing more harm than good^

@RoosterPie

You will not receive a sensible reply to your point from the partisan political tribalists who are farcically claiming that the UK government wants people to die. The current situation is not sustainable. Not politically, not economically, not practically. Lockdown has to end before there is a cure for this virus. How do people imagine three more months of house arrest will be policed? Or funded?

Oblomov20 · 09/05/2020 11:32

I saw the same. Many very sensible women I know videoed the party. All started off ok. By the end they were drinking, singing and passing each other very close by.

Beggars belief.

Have no idea why the government and the queen and everyone encouraged this v day celebration?????
HmmHmmHmm

Rainbunny · 09/05/2020 11:33

Why is it when Sweden does it, it’s great And sensible but if Boris does it, he’s murdering people?

I'm so tired of the Sweden example being trotted out. Sweden is not analogous to the UK demographically. For a start, 40% of all swedish households are single households with no children. This makes it very much easier to isolate by virtue of the fact that a significant portion of the country lives alone, this single factor would slow down the spread of any disease.

If we had maintained a testing and tracing strategy from the start as other countries did like South Korea, we could have avoided the lockdown being necessary but we didn't and still don't have the resources for that. We also stand almost alone in the world in not limiting incoming air travel throughout this whole time. WTF the government has been thinking is for people to speculate but my personal take on the governments motivations is a ''let them eat cake'' attitude.

thesedaysarescary · 09/05/2020 11:33

I agree op people are stupid! So many have started ignoring the guidelines and rules and yesterday was a shit show all around the country. I had a picnic in my back garden with the kids. We had fun made our own bunting and decorations. My neighbours opposite had a street party by 9pm they were in each other's front gardens pissed playing drinking games and singing and shouting and dancing with each other while the kids all played together. 2 neighbours had their families over! They will be out Thursday clapping for the nhs. Hopefully none of the older participants the week after won't be in hospital fighting for their lives.

Still not heard your plan Bovary? You seem very keen foreveryone else to explain themselves?

maddiemookins16mum · 09/05/2020 11:37

I agree Op but MN is a different world and thousands on here give zero feck about the Lockdown and call anyone still strictly observing the rules a variety of names ranging from curtain twitchers to the fecking Stasi brigade.

BovaryX · 09/05/2020 11:39

We also stand almost alone in the world in not limiting incoming air travel throughout this whole time

The UK is off its head with this. Borders are closed, flights restricted, temperature checks at the supermarket. This is what is happening in other countries. The fact that the UK is allowing international flights in without any checks is bonkers.

Soontobe60 · 09/05/2020 11:39

For those of you posing derogatory comments about 'the English', try substituting Asian, Chinese, African for English. Can't you see how racist this is?

minisoksmakehardwork · 09/05/2020 11:39

I'm with the conspiracy theorists that this weekend has been seen as the ideal weekend to spread the virus.

I don't think there is enough evidence to support immunity once a person has had the virus and by allowing a planned increase in cases, there will be more data available to scrutinise. There will also be more data to scrutinise as to how the virus has spread.

In our village most people abide by social distancing guidelines. It's when you get into the town and supermarkets to do shopping that we find large numbers of people who have either had enough of social distancing or think distancing doesn't apply to them.

That said, the VE Day celebrations have certainly boosted morale for many who were finding continued social isolation difficult. In my village this appears to have been achieved within social distancing guidelines but part of this is of course not everyone participated. So you would have a couple of houses scattered here and there where people were out front enjoying themselves. Others spent time in their back gardens but calling over fences to neighbours.

runrunrunrunt · 09/05/2020 11:41

They boosted morale last night definitely but how many do you think are waking up today sober thinking have I actually just spent the last couple of months being as careful as possible only to drunkenly immerse myself in a full on germ party last night. Hangover fear.

Toomuchspinach · 09/05/2020 11:41

A 6 week old baby dies with CV and I'm reading 'We're bored of lockdown it's OK to stop social distancing just look after yourself' comments

The reports are saying - six week old baby dies with corona virus. That’s not the same if dying because of it. We already know that people dying of cancer/heart attacks ect.. are having COVID put on their death certificates.

That statement is a news grabbing headline. We don’t know if that baby was already very poorly.

BovaryX · 09/05/2020 11:42

Still not heard your plan Bovary? You seem very keen foreveryone else to explain themselves?

@runrunrunrunt

Lockdown can't continue. You are the one unable to grasp that. You are ranting about the government allowing VE day celebrations, yet you can't answer how long lockdown should continue? It has to end. Because if the UK remains on house arrest until Covid is completely eradicated? There will have been economic carnage on a scale perhaps worse than the depression.

TinRoofRusty · 09/05/2020 11:43

Life, it's 100% terminal.

Lemonblast · 09/05/2020 11:45

Bovary do remind us whereabouts in the UK you actually reside?

runrunrunrunt · 09/05/2020 11:45

I'm going to say this again for you even slower @BovaryX

For the third fucking time

Yes lockdown should end

Our numbers just now do not suggest that this is the time

The new infections are still too high

The R is still a bit too close to one

When the government get the numbers under control, as many other countries have, they can begin to ease the lockdown.

A timeframe cannot be provided for that because people are still behaving in a stupid way and socialising etc

Please read this carefully as I don't think I can post it a fourth time.

OP posts:
runrunrunrunt · 09/05/2020 11:48

And in addition to people not following the rules the governments rules were never strict enough to drive it down enough.

Would you just have them say fuck it can't be bothered trying to drive the infection rate down. Too hard. Just end the lock down tomorrow and sacrifice thousands. Hmm

OP posts:
JoeExoticsEyebrowRing · 09/05/2020 11:48

Lockdown was to prevent the NHS becoming overwhelmed at the peak. That has now happened, the NHS did not become overwhelmed. In the absence of a vaccine, which is a long way off, the way to slow transmission is to allow it to go through the population and create some immunity in the population.

The VE Day parties are stupid, but I still don't understand what people think is going to happen over the next few months, especially as we go back into winter and flu season. This virus isnt going anywhere, we have to live with it for the foreseeable future.

OneandTwenty · 09/05/2020 11:48

We already know that people dying of cancer/heart attacks ect.. are having COVID put on their death certificates.

don't worry, that's nicely balanced with the numbers who died of c19 but only had things like pneumonia on their death certificates.

Absolutely the virus is going nowhere but we need to be in a position to track and trace to move on to the next phase and we are nowhere near that.

Goatymcgoaty · 09/05/2020 11:50

@Madmarchpear

The strategy was always to achieve herd immunity with staggered infection. Hiding away bankrolled by the government, waiting for a speedy vaccine programme would destroy the world economy. Dominic Cummimgs has played a blinder making so many of us fall for the diversionary fetishisation of the NHS and rainbow painting to get us out of this. The elderly and frail were always going to go to the wall

I agree with every word. Boris said so right at the start - your granny might die, deal with it.

All that’s happened since is the government have realised they need to mask this strategy better, so that the masses are manipulated into thinking they’re trying to save us all. To be fair, they’ve done a good job up till now 🤷🏼‍♀️

Mintychoc1 · 09/05/2020 11:50

A friend of mine challenged his neighbours last night, as they were having a loud non-distancing party. And he got beaten up. It’s disgusting.
