Just checking this is fair - child maintenance

My husband usually pays £40 per week to his ex wife for one child.
When the lockdown happened we both lost both our income , both self employed, and have had to claim universal credit, which is just about covering our bills.

His ex wife is wfh, fully paid a very good wage.
At the time my husbands income stopped he spoke to his ex wife, who said they would just sort things out when he got his self employment support payment through.
As he is now on universal credit she is only due £7pw, as his income is £0.
Im pretty sure she is expecting a back payment of £40 pw.
How do we approach this? it is going to take a long time for us to get back on our feet, where as financially she hasn't been affected.
If my husband had lost his job in any other circumstances he would not be expected to pay £40 pw to her whilst on uc, so is this any different?

@ChrissieKeller61 sounds like he gave away his life savings already to provide the mortgage free home in which their child lives. I'm a parent of 4 young children, the older 2 are from my exH so believe me, I know what it's like. But you can't get blood from a stone, you can't get cash from someone who has just lost their job! If the child lived with them then they'd be having to visit food banks and maybe getting into debt by not paying the rent or bills. I would never expect my exH to make himself homeless just so he can carry on paying £48 per week maintenance

If £48 a week was going to make you homeless I’d say you were fucked anyway tbh. No viable business is making £50 a week profit.

lyingwanker · 11/05/2020 13:48

@ChrissieKeller61 well this is where people like you must live a different lifestyle to us lowly low earners because £48 per week can be the difference between making ends meet or not. Heating or food in the winter.

ChrissieKeller61 · 11/05/2020 14:07

@lyingwanker - yes, understood. But it wouldn’t make you homeless would it ? So that’s just being dramatic

Chrissie not everyone is as privileged as you. There are plenty of people who would be homeless if they lost £48 a week. This is just life for some people. Dramatic does not mean it's not real.

£7 a week in child support - he should be ashamed of himself - does he want his kids to starve?
