Is it going to be optional? What about those children, or those children with household members who have been told to shield? If schools opening means lots of people expected back at work, what will they do for childcare outside school hours? Will grandparents be expected to drop off and collect? There's no way social distancing can be maintained in a school, so if we're doing away with it there, couldn't we open up bars and cinemas again (I don't think we should btw)?

I can see it happening, but I can see it being a pain in the arse all round, and if any 'lockdown' rules remain, they'll seem even more backwards and people will be even less inclined to comply. This doesn't matter so much if the plan is to gradually ease the lockdown once the situation is in hand, but I just feel like it's too soon. Although a lot can change in a month, I suppose.

I will not be sending mine back and will hopefully continue to WFH. A few extra weeks of home schooling for a decreased risk of family illness of unpredictable severity is sensible compromise for us. I personally feel that daily death/infection rates should be lower before school opens.

@NeverDropYourMoonCup I thought that and I think that is one reason for the 1st of June.

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 04/05/2020 00:22

People speculating about newspapers speculating is just getting silly now.........if the words haven't come from Bojos lips or someone linked to Bojo then the likelihood is it's not true

Peppafrig · 04/05/2020 07:25

@WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo not true our First Minister will be announcing what is happening with Schools here the decision is hers not Boris .

Reginabambina · 04/05/2020 07:34

Loads of newspapers have come out with this except it’s not true. It’s bizarre and I don’t understand it. I guess they’re just so desperate to be the ones with breaking news of restrictions being lifted that they’re making stuff up now.

It’s been said many time that Scotland and other countries such as Italy and Spain break up for summer in June hence them not going back before summer. English schools don’t break up until end of July. So no English and Scottish children aren’t different. Just maybe the different term dates have something to do with it eh?

Thing is you can't know that. The timing is the same. They are a head of us still in the going down the peak. However we will never know if they broke up in July if it would have been different. It may not have been they maybe want more time to get the R lower and research therapies before they unleash millions of people to roads and schools.

@SE13Mummy your ideas and views make a lot of sense.
I also think the government leaked this and is fishing for feedback so I hope they read all opinions, really good feedback here from real families not desktop thinkers.
I also hope they base the decision on science and they finally get to advance on understanding how transmission works including among children.
@mumsnet will you pass considered feedback to government too?

AnnPerkins · 04/05/2020 11:10

I can't see this happening in our area. DS is in Y6 at middle school so it's Y4 and Y8s who are transitioning to middle and upper schools in September.

Yesterday the Sunday Times said it would be years 5, 10 and 12, because those children will have exams next year.

peoplepleaser1 · 04/05/2020 13:01

If the government are reading this please consider asking schools to improve hand washing facilities, especially prior to eating and remove requirements for blazers and other pieces of uniform that cannot be washed daily.

Ilikefresias · 04/05/2020 13:04

I’ve just had a senior management meeting at my school. This is not official , nothing is- it’s all guesswork!!

DrMadelineMaxwell · 07/05/2020 21:32

And the Welsh Minister for Education has categorically stated that schools in Wales will not be opening on 1st June and is publishing a document of plans/targets for ensuring going back to school is safe. I look forward to reading that.

Pollymalex104 · 08/05/2020 00:38

Definitely no plan for going back yet.
