Any anti-vaxxers around?

Just wondering if anyone who would normally consider themselves to be an anti vaxxer, who hasn't given their child eg MMR would mind sharing if they've changed their mind following covid? If they'd take a vaccine when one is available, give it to their children etc?

No reason other than idle curiosity, vaccines are in the news a lot at the moment. I'm not a journalist, just a furloughed and slightly bored parent interested in hearing world views which are different from my own.

If you're interested I'm a scientist who is happy with the evidence base for vaccines and use them myself and for my children

I do wonder how many anti-vaxxers know what vaccination actually is and how it works.

They'll be too busy worrying about Bill Gates and his microchips 🙄 and conflating critical thinking with conspiracy theories. 🤦🏻‍♀️

I have a friend who is a children’s nurse and no way previously anti-Vader always has stuck with the vaccine schedule for her daughter, who was recently 1. She has previously reacted to vaccines she’s had, and has reacted to her MMR severely. She has decided moving forward to not give further vaccines due to the adverse reactions, including Covid when it’s approved. It’s also made her question what is in them and she why her daughter has reacted the way she has. Not quite a typical anti Vaxx situation but thought worth sharing!

I’ve been on the fence with vaccines but since she’s spoken about her daughter I’ve researched out of curiosity too. I’d actually love to know your thoughts on the inclusion of WI-38 human lung fibroblasts in one of the MMR vaccines used by the NHS? I was surprised when I read what it was I am struggling on what the benefits are of including it, especially as from what I’ve read the other MMR the nhs use doesn’t have it in.

Live vaccines contain viruses, which only grow inside a cell. They cannot replicate on their own. In order to manufacture enough virus to make a vaccine, you need to grow it up in cells. For one of the MMR vaccines used in the UK, the rubella virus is grown in WI-38. There is nothing magical about the other vaccine - it just uses a different human cell line (MRC-5).

The benefit of the WI-38 cells is that they are part of the manufacturing process and without them (or something similar), there is no vaccine.

Thank you for explaining this further I do understand the logic behind it, but surely with the way we have advanced within pharmaceuticals there would be another alternative.

Because there's no reason to when they already have a perfectly effective way of manufacturing it? The cells aren't in the vaccines.

Neither of my DC had the MMR. I'm not anti- vaccines, I made a decision not to allow them to have MMR. I can't be bothered to argue or debate. I have an opinion on MMR. I have no reason to believe all vaccines are dangerous. Mine had single measles and rubella. If offered we will have the Covid vaccine.

Hi OP. I know a few people whose children have had adverse reactions to vaccines (and eventually diagnosed with autism). My friend is a speech pathologist who works with autistic children and many parents report severe reactions to vaccines and subsequent regression.
I believe these parents. Given the rates of autism these days, I did not vaccine my children. I will not be vaccinating them against Covid.

Do you know what autism is?!?! It’s a life long that’s life long neurological development condition.

It is not caused by vaccines, eating non organic foods, watching tv, a single mother having boyfriends (I heard that said on Jeremy Kyle once) 5g, you can’t catch it from another kid, or any other conspiracy theorist explanation for autism.

You are born with it, it’s the way you develop.

Sorry I can not stand uninformed nonsense at the best of times but when it plays in to the Andrew Wakefield bullying and othering of autistic people it really upsets me.

Both my boys had single measles, mumps and rubella. Both were fine with all vaccines, no adverse reactions.
Vaccines don’t cause autism. If they did , why aren’t both my boys austic? Only my youngest is.

I’m normally in favour of all vaccines, I’ve had them , as have my boys including the flu shots. However I’m going to watch and wait and see what happens with the COVID one. Not traveling or going anywhere internationally for a year , so will see how it works with the general public first!

I think you’re be very hard pushed to find a true anti vaxxer who will have changed there mind over Corona.
Anti vaccine is not necessarily about being anti vaccine but pro natural health, immune system etc. It’s a belief that you’re body is far more intelligent than any scientist.
Despite what you think of anti vaxxers, most spend hundreds of hours reading through scientific paperwork and studies.
There’s this weird belief from people that do not study all the available information that scientists all form a collaborative view. I’ve heard so many times during last year “the scientists say..”
I find it crazy that seemingly intelligent people say this! For every scientist that says one thing, you can bet your life, there is another somewhere trying to disprove the same theory.
The scientists on TV say Corona is a disaster, but there any many out there saying differently. However they don’t get on mainstream TV as it’s not the Government’s narrative.
The same goes for vaccines. There are many medics, scientists, professors etc. that bring forth evidence or there own views about vaccines but it’s not and TV and it’s not in YOUR narrative to look for it.

If you can’t trust your body to know ‘your’ from ‘you’re’, can you really trust it to know better than a scientist when it comes to vaccines?

Its interesting to hear a different point of view. To learn why people think and feel the way they do. If we don't understand we can't begin to have a conversation and give them an alternative view point which may lead to change.

I find it unbelievable that intellect people say that your body is more intelligent than any scientist

We know scientists don’t agree and actually we like that their trying to disprove each other. There’s an excellent example on this thread. Thank the lord that people set out to disprove Andrew Wakefield, else we’d have far more people believing that autism was preventable and trying to cure us!

Another thing that is completely natural is the human desire for knowledge that’s what science is constant learning!

I believe your body does know what it needs but I also believe that science boasts and supports that. Neither are more intelligent than either science learns how our body works, so we can support it more

I was extremely pro vax until my first two children reacted badly to them. They were both fully vaxxed and I bitterly regret it as I believe it damaged them. My subsequent child has not been vaxxed and never will be. It’s one of those things you don’t believe unless it happens to your child. And yes I was one of those mumsnetters who loved to be scathing and roll my eyes about ‘anti vaxxers’ before I had these experiences myself.

Bad reactions could happen to any one with any medication

One of the most well known bad reactions is to penicillin!

No, I haven't changed my mind. I will never have it.

I have 4 completely unvaxxed grandchildren and one who has had one and one other who had all vaxxes including mmr.
He has autism.
