Boris completely misunderstands the question

Michelle in Cornwall says they are getting inquiries about booking their holiday let from June onwards, but they are worried about people from cities bringing a second wave to Cornwall. How will tourism be managed in the coming weeks?

What Boris heard: when can I start getting income from my holiday let?

So he went on to assure her that she would be able to open when the time was right etc but it was important not to do it too soon. Completely missing the point, I think.

He never answers a question. He either uses one of the well known Tory phrases or waffles and says what he likes

IATR · 30/04/2020 17:32

Yes and no. I live in a seaside resort and the weekend before the lockdown, the place was packed with visiting tourists, all the shops, arcades etc were open which doesn't help to deter people and adds to the problem.

bellabelly · 30/04/2020 17:32

I think it was a totally deliberate "misunderstanding". Shame she didn't get to respond.

MrsSpenserGregson · 30/04/2020 17:35

He didn't misunderstand. He had no intention of answering it because he has no answer. That question did not come as a surprise to him.

Mummy5hark · 30/04/2020 17:35

Politicians do this all the time! Answering the questions they want to hear or hae prepared for. Hancock has been doing this and cutting people off not allowing for them to follow up

LEELULUMPKIN · 30/04/2020 17:39

All politicians play Dodge Ball OP. Boris is a master at it.

Eeyoresstickhouse · 30/04/2020 17:42

So Michelle from Cornwall (who didn't sound very Cornish to us, DH is born and bred Cornish) wants it all ways. She wants her holiday let open but doesn't want the tourists?!?!?!

I really don't know what she expected the answer to be from that question. Did she expect him to say "yes start taking bookings for June and July".

It is so sad that the tourism industry is being so decimated from this (we live in a very tourist town), but Michelle needs to be patient and look after her self and the locals first.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 30/04/2020 17:45

I was rolling my eyes at his answer to the mental health question as he took it as an opportunity to blow the goverment's trumpet when it was a valuable opportunity to tell people where they could get help. Luckily Chris Whitty saw what was needed.

Rowgtfc72 · 30/04/2020 17:47

I live in a seaside resort on the east coast, beautiful weather last weekend and our seafront was rammed.
Yes our tourist industry is losing money but the message from the majority of locals is please stay away.

New slogan for Cornwall

Cornwall. Don’t forget we told you all to fuck off

hellosunshine5 · 30/04/2020 17:50

I don’t think I’ve ever heard him, or any other politician for that matter, directly answer a question in my life! Not expecting them to start anytime soon either Grin

MrsSpenserGregson · 30/04/2020 17:50

Total side-stepping of the question about lack of treatment currently for cancer and other life-threatening conditions too. Again, Chris Witty seemed to want to at least try to give an answer ...

Daffodil101 · 30/04/2020 17:51

I was also confused about what she actually wanted

Legoandloldolls · 30/04/2020 17:54

Typical dodge

"Good question, I'm so glad you asked. Because it's a important point. Next question please"

DobbyTheHouseElk · 30/04/2020 17:54

If she want people to come and rent her holiday let in June, does she want them to be tested first before they cross the Tamar?

Namechangervaver · 30/04/2020 17:54

The thing is his colleagues have been doing quite well in his absence. They've actually been answering questions properly and holding their hands up when they don't know the answer yet. The difference is quite stark now that Boris is back. That press conference was excruciating.

romatheroamer · 30/04/2020 17:58

Well I'm glad he recovered but otherwise......same old, same old. In fact, I've always found him worse at answering questions than some of the ministers who were filling in.

Hopeisnotastrategy · 30/04/2020 17:59

Go away bot.

Alsohuman · 30/04/2020 18:00

That was an absolutely terrible performance. The advisors’ embarrassment was palpable. And, yes, I said exactly the same about the answer to Michelle from Cornwall.

Aesopfable · 30/04/2020 18:02

Politicians rarely miss the point. The first rule of answering questions as a politician is to always answer the questions you think someone should has asked, not the one they did. Boris is the same as all politicians in this regard.

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 30/04/2020 18:04

Away with your "Boris." He is Bozo, BJ, BlowJob, or Johnson - slang for a posh cock.

effingterrified · 30/04/2020 18:04

Isn't this easy?

Michelle doesn't advertise her property until she is sure it is safe?

Or did she mean 'How do I stop my neighbours advertising their properties?' Or 'Are you going to ban holiday lets to keep rural areas safe?'

Boris got out of the question because it was a crap question.

ElsieMc · 30/04/2020 18:06

Better still Keir Starmer now popping up and taking credit for the potential publishing of an exit strategy next week as though the government could not possibly have thought of that without his say so. They are all as bad as each other.

Raab has improved as he has gone along, Matt Hancock a bit hit and miss, but does show emotion. Michael Gove scarily efficient whatever your view of him. Priti Patel, fgs keep her away from the cameras, so very icy.

pussycatinboots · 30/04/2020 18:06

If someone had asked "Is your name Boris?" I doubt he would have been able to answer!
The briefings while he's been absent have been quite informative, this one was a joke.
I felt really sorry for Prof Whitty and Sir Patrick having to stand either side of a clown.

AldiAisleOfCrap · 30/04/2020 18:06

Yesterday’s question was even worse as a non answer to the parent of a disabled shielding child and their return to school.
