Shielding, slots and food parcels

Does anyone know if it's possible to stop them sending the food parcel while keeping the delivery slots? Do you lose the slots if you re-register as being able to get food on gov.uk?

I have food parcel guilt Sad

Yeah me too. Dh is shielding and each week we get a box. Would only just feed him, not 2 adults and a teenager.

It's a bit of a laugh when we get it - trying to figure out the meals we could make. So glad I don't have to rely on it as it's the same each week.
Mushy peas and cheese and onion Frey bentos yuk!

I don't know where the food comes from, I want to give it to someone worse off, but we need the priority shopping slots!

Lumene · 28/04/2020 18:58

Contact your local council or food bank.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 28/04/2020 18:59

Yeah we're in the same boat with food parcel guilt but we don't want to lose our priority delivery slots. We use what we can and take some to the food bank. Haven't had mushy peas yet though, love them!

Glittercandle · 28/04/2020 19:00

We get priority slots and no food parcels - I ticked the box stating we didn’t need help getting food which stops you getting the parcels but not the priority slots.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 28/04/2020 19:03

Hmmm that's odd @glitterparcels as the first time we registered we ticked that box and got zero in terms of priority slots! So had to do it again a few weeks later hence now getting both.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 28/04/2020 19:04

Oops tag fail. I meant @glittercandles

yunalis · 28/04/2020 19:04

zizzag We get a bit of a bizarre selection too.

I’ve just risked it and registered again saying can get essential supplies. Spoke to someone else who did that as soon as they got the emails from supermarkets and they’ve still got slots and no food parcels yet. Worse case I’ll just have to do it again.

Thanks Lumene too, I’ll do that if they still try and deliver.

chocolate same here. Odd.

glitter fingers crossed this works then! Thanks

They could really do with making this system a bit less complicated!

My counter argument in my head is that between us we pay a shit ton in taxes so a bit of free food isn't exactly taking the piss. But of course I would rather it went to those more in need. Don't think the government have made it particularly easy though, even if the intention was right.

Incidentally my auntie who has very little money also says she feels guilty for getting the food boxes - it obviously just doesn't sit right with some people regardless of their circumstances!

yunalis · 28/04/2020 19:21

chocolate that’s it, it just doesn’t sit right. I’ve been saving it for the food bank but I don’t have space for much more. Definitely paid enough taxes though, need to keep that in mind if one turns up next week.

We have a box in our dining room that we chuck stuff in that we know we won't eat, then it goes to the food bank every couple of weeks.

PumpkinP · 28/04/2020 19:24

Just call them, I think ours come from the local council, ours are odd aswell and lots we don’t eat (pork, tuna) but I do use what I can as I’m struggling to get slots even with the priority and with the limit on how many items you can buy (Tesco’s) it doesn’t last us long as a family of 5 so they come in handy , the milk, bread etc

OrganTransplant123 · 28/04/2020 19:32

I re-registered to say I didn’t need help and I can still get priority slots. I took them three weeks to stop the boxes though. They are a nice idea and were useful to a point although the bread was always out of date (a whole month out of date in the last box) plus we has mouldy apples and onions. It’d be so upsetting if you had nothing but these boxes.

I’ve saved all the stuff we won’t use for the food bank.

yunalis · 28/04/2020 19:40

Pumpkin thanks will definitely do that if they keep coming.

organtransplant yes! Thank you, that’s what I hoped would happen! I’m stupidly relieved. The bread in ours is a bit odd dates wise, they added an explanation to the letter this week.

It is a great idea overall and I’m very grateful for the help, just feel guilty.

HTF do you do that? I registered DH, who is shielding, with his email address and said he didn’t need help getting food. I’ve tried inputting his email several times with Sainsbury’s but they say they don”t recognise him as vulnerable

BlueBrian · 28/04/2020 19:53

There's a sheet of paper in my box, which says that if you don't want the parcel, just tell the driver and he'll take it away, and see it goes elsewhere.

Wingedharpy · 28/04/2020 19:56

Could you try another supermarket @ QuaverQueen?
Tesco didn't recognise me but Asda and Sainsbury's did.
No clue how any of it works tbh.

Glittercandle · 28/04/2020 20:07

QuaverQueen I made sure I was registered with as many supermarkets as possible with the same email as I used in the gov site. In the last few weeks I’ve heard from Sainsbury’s, Iceland and Asda. Thankfully I’ve been getting a weekly slot from Ocado (as a regular customers) but nice to know there are other options!

OrganTransplant123 · 28/04/2020 20:32

There was no information in the box at all. I told the driver I’d requested that they stop so thanks but I didn’t need it and he said that it’d end up rotting in a warehouse if I didn’t take it.

I was registered with Tesco and Sainsbury’s already for food deliveries so when they got the government lists they both emailed.

FuzzyPuffling · 28/04/2020 20:37

We get the box and priority slots, although the slots are still 2.5 to 3 weeks apart. We made an attempt to get a vegetarian box (no more corned beef or chicken Fray Bentos pie!) but it appears impossible. The local council said it was nothing to do with them (despite information on the accompanying letter) and the Govt website didn't have the option.

We give what we don't want/can't eat to the local food bank.

In summary: The pasta bake sauce is quite nice with extra veg in it, the Fig Rolls are horrible and what is the point of the Wagon Wheels?!

OrganTransplant123 · 28/04/2020 20:41

We didn’t get wagon wheels! There was chocolate cereal but that was the only vaguely treat item. We got fig rolls too but they definitely don’t count.

FuzzyPuffling · 28/04/2020 20:44

We got McVities digestive biscuits this week, which was definitely an improvement. Can't wait to see what tomorrow's box brings....Custard Creams?

I do like the tinned tomatoes and Heinz soup and beans though.

CherryPavlova · 28/04/2020 20:47

Yes it arrives after Sainsbury’s. I tried to cancel but can’t. Now we deliver to neighbours who have just state pension. They love getting it and we know it’s being used by someone who needs it.

I have several slots to choose from each week from three supermarkets. Sainsbury’s seems to be the most efficient and best service.

CherryPavlova · 28/04/2020 20:48

My daughter didn’t recognise some of the products. She couldn’t believe pies or potatoes came in tins.

Sadbadglad · 28/04/2020 20:52

How comes I am on the shielded list and live alone but dont receive a box
