Does anyone know if it's possible to stop them sending the food parcel while keeping the delivery slots? Do you lose the slots if you re-register as being able to get food on gov.uk?

I have food parcel guilt Sad

The bread in the box isn't out of date BTW, it's 2021 date.. long life

inchoccyheaven · 28/04/2020 20:53

Both dw and I are registered but haven't had food parcels or priority slots. We ticked the box to say others helping us with food but that doesn't mean we can ask them to get lots of food for us and would rather have slots.

OrganTransplant123 · 28/04/2020 20:58

Oh shit is it really long life bread?! It looked like a normal white sliced loaf. Oh dear.

ClientQ · 28/04/2020 21:00

Yeah really long life! Mine is dated March 2021 Blush

BlueBrian · 28/04/2020 21:00

The bread is normally supplied to retailers frozen that's why it's such a long date, the retailer is meant to re-date it when they take it out of the freezer and display it for sale.

TheGreatWave · 28/04/2020 21:05

sad have you registered on the government website?

www.gov.uk/coronavirus-extremely-vulnerable

FuzzyPuffling · 28/04/2020 21:12

The bread makes excellent toasties.

FuzzyPuffling · 28/04/2020 21:14

inchoccyheaven I know what you mean. There's a huge difference between "could you pick me up a pint of milk?"and "would you mind doing my £100 shop?"

NaturalBornWoman · 28/04/2020 21:32

I didn’t get supermarket priority until I ticked the needs help with food box on the govt website and then I got a man turn up with a food box. I just said I don’t need it thank you and he took it away. I then got a call from the local council asking if I need help and I asked about opting out of the box. He said whatever you do don’t go back on the website and re register as not needing help with food as you’ll lose your supermarket priority slots, just decline the box and ask if they can update their records at the distribution centre.

yunalis · 28/04/2020 22:08

Nooo don’t say that natural!

OP posts:
2old4thissite · 28/04/2020 22:09

Exactly Natural.
Initially we ticked box to say we didn't need food box, but weren't recognized on any supermarket lists and couldn't get slots.
So last week dh changed to yes please to food box and open sesame! We got a phone call from CC asking if we needed any help. A food box suddenly appeared with no warning and we have been able to get slots at Tesco, Asda (several) and Iceland.
Feel v guilty about the box, but too scared to re-register.
Explained all this to council lady and she didn't know the answer either. Suspect it's an all in or all out system. Not v subtle, but they did have to organize it v quick.

yunalis · 28/04/2020 22:09

Yes the letter said it was frozen bread and should be eaten within 2 or 3 days.

I have been given priority for slots from Sainsbury's and Waitrose but not Tesco, Asda nor Ocado, even though I already had accounts with all of them.

I received a phone call last week following up as I'd said I needed help and was able to say to the lady I didn't need a food parcel as I now had access to the slots, and she said that was fine, she could make a note of that.

So it's certainly possible if you have the contact details.

2old4thissite · 28/04/2020 22:16

We had a van collecting for the food bank come round last week, so can give them stuff if it comes round again.
Interested in your contents
Some appears standard - the lovely bread, extremely large onion (just the oneSmile) - some not. Nearest we got to treats was off-brand digestive, no fig rolls or wagon wheels. Surprised to see 2 tins Heinz baked beans (could barter with them!)
Carb heavy and protein light. No meat, one small can tuna. Wonder where it all comes from?

ClientQ · 28/04/2020 22:20

I've put anything to one side for the food bank so it won't get wasted. I've used some as still waiting for delivery slots so don't want to not receive anything

BlueBrian · 28/04/2020 22:25

With a bit of luck, they've finally managed to run out of the chocolate cereal, had porridge oats instead in the latest box, which are far more healthy and useful.

AldiAisleOfCrap · 28/04/2020 22:33

They are a nice idea and were useful to a point although the bread was always out of date (a whole month out of date in the last box)
If you read the note on the box it says they freeze the bread so it’s not really out of date.

OrganTransplant123 · 28/04/2020 22:39

There was nothing in or on my box at all! No note about bread, no contact details. The driver stuck a piece of A4 on top that said this was a government box because someone at this address had registered as vulnerable. It directed to the website if you wanted to cancel.

AldiAisleOfCrap · 28/04/2020 22:42

Ah ok this is my letter

Say on bottom of page 2 re the bread.

Sadbadglad · 29/04/2020 17:14

I had filled in the government form weeks ago. I rang this morning and was told I should have been having the box of food !!!

AldiAisleOfCrap · 29/04/2020 19:30

@Sadbadglad ring your local council , if you google there will be a number specifically for Coronavirus related enquires. They should be able to arrange a food box.

LoveBeingAMum555 · 29/04/2020 20:28

To begin with we registered DS to say he didnt need help with shopping and none of the supermarkets recognised him as vulnerable. We re-registered as needing help and now have a recurring slot with Asda.

We got a food parcel last Tuesday but nothing since. It was good I thought, potatoes, carrots, apples, satsumas, spaghetti, pasta sauce, Ready Brek, Heinz tomato soup, tuna, digestive biscuits and bread which we will use. The odd things we won't use we will take to the foodbank when all this is over.

I did feel a tiny bit guilty about accepting it but DS was getting really anxious about food shopping and it has reassured him. It does seem a bit of a waste if a lot of these parcels are going to people who aren't desperate for food but I suppose the government are trying to keep things simple.

BlueBrian · 29/04/2020 20:39

Now my box hasn't turned up today, it's not the end of the world, but that sort of unreliability could really leave some vulnerable people in the lurch, if they're relying on it.

bumblingbovine49 · 29/04/2020 22:09

We actually have 2 Fray Bentos cheese and onion pies in tins in our pantry. DH and DS actually like them occasionally . Not me I hasten to add
