This clap gets louder and more elaborate every week!

From the first week (just clapping) we now have multiple fireworks, one neighbour has plans, another bells, there are horns, yelling and car horns being sounded. Ironically the neighbours with friends round for a BBQ are a particularly loud lot.
I am miserable in not really getting it?

I heard some distant fireworks, lots of pots and pans out too. Clapping for two minutes make your hands fizzy though.

CrystalTipped · 23/04/2020 20:05

I was just thinking that! Fireworks for five minutes, car horns, air horns. Clapping just doesn't cut it in my street anymore...

TheThingWithFeathers · 23/04/2020 20:06

It's getting ridiculous. Folk here are still clapping five minutes later. At least the pot bangers have stopped.

cheeseislife8 · 23/04/2020 20:07

Our neighbours have been getting more elaborate each week, there was even a tambourine tonight!

user764329056 · 23/04/2020 20:07

What does it matter? Life is bleak enough at the moment, if people want to make a noise for 3 mins a week is it really harming anyone?

ToffeeYoghurt · 23/04/2020 20:07

Do you live nesr me? That sounds like where I am. The honking, bells, fireworks, neighbours BBQ. It's got a bit silly now.

Sparklingbrook · 23/04/2020 20:07

Nobody wants to be the first to stop clapping. Grin

TenShortStories · 23/04/2020 20:08

I sort of feel the same, but people are just doing what they feel is right/helpful for them. Many are also bored beyond belief. Unless they are the ones who are naming shaming non-clappers (inexcusable behaviour) then I would try not to waste any energy being grumpy about it; it's just people being people.

MorrisZapp · 23/04/2020 20:09

Come to Scotland! We've got bagpipes. Absolutely bloody love it.

Figgygal · 23/04/2020 20:09

My 8yo likes staying up and banging his saucepan
There’s only about 4 houses by us that do it

PickAChew · 23/04/2020 20:09

We just had someone setting off fireworks. It's still daylight, ffs.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 23/04/2020 20:10

It's not enough just to clap. You have to be SEEN and clearly heard above all other around here, clapping (and horn honking/pan bashing).

I don't get it. It makes no difference to the people who above all deserve the right pay, conditions and protection, not us making noises on our doorsteps....or judging those who don't.

FelineUK · 23/04/2020 20:11

@HibiscusPot - you must live where I do! Anyone would think it was 5th November with fireworks banging behind us, very loudly - even my key worker husband has started to swear about the noise it's now become.. Too loud man, too loud.. is it really necessary?!

Nothing to do with being miserable, it's just a noise - sets dogs barking, kids crying.. and I'm sure all key workers get how appreciative everyone is.

HibiscusPot · 23/04/2020 20:13

@MorrisZapp surprisingly I’m in the south east and we have a local pipe band, they are playing most afternoons on the Green (individually). I didn’t mention them, but we do have bagpipes!
Maybe I’ll use lockdown to find out the history of why...

We had trains last week, fireworks, pots and pans. Videos on Facebook of the police at the big hospital (luckily all 2 metres apart).
OK your neighbours who have friends round are either massive hypocrites or just plain dumb.

Bonfire night round here they are enraged at any fireworks display. The same at New Year. Mostly people with pets admittedly. It’s weekly now and not a peep of a complaint out of any of them.

I get the reason behind it but it’s definitely getting louder and more competitive every week. I think it might have lost its previous well meaning.

ShowOfHands · 23/04/2020 20:14

Lots of local houses have posters up imploring people to stop with the fireworks as it's terrifying pets. Hasn't worked, they're getting fancier as the weeks go by.

AnneElliott · 23/04/2020 20:14

Bagpipes! I am jealous. Love the sound of them.

HibiscusPot · 23/04/2020 20:14

@Nquartz we have hospital videos with police and others, Not distancing at all

We go out each week and clap, sometimes DS bangs a pot. Most our neighbours do the same. What I cant understand is why people video their usually pretty boring street and post on facebook. Yes we know what clapping and pot banging looks and sounds like. Weve been out their ourselves. And it sounded the same as last week....and the week before.

Eeyoresstickhouse · 23/04/2020 20:16

We are the only ones clapping in our road. We still do it week after week. I am showing solidarity for all keyworkers.

Withnailandaye · 23/04/2020 20:16

I have a railway line next to my house and even the train drivers were honking last week. 😁

I'm a care worker and it's nice to feel (sort of) appreciated for once to be honest.

Our private company gave us a tiny (and I mean tiny, like a A4 piece of paper folded in half) gift bag with some tea bags, a couple of mini chocolates and a few packs of those little cappuccino mixes in with a thank you note. For all 8 members of staff. Confused

Ya know.. another 6 face shields would have been more appreciated, saying as how we only have 2.. And we have had a covid case there already.. but no, minimum wage, minimum PPE and a cup of shite coffee will do us little folk.. apparantly.

BlueBrian · 23/04/2020 20:17

None of my neighbours have ever got involved in this clapping business, so about all I can hear are a few fireworks in the distance.
