How are people still getting infected

when we have been in lockdown for 4.5 weeks, is the incubation period longer than 2 weeks?

Because it is not possible to remove all risk of transmission.

I suppose so, and the NHS staff, carers and key workers are exposed and then their families too.

Because people are contagious before they have symptoms (some people don't ever get any) so they're still spreading it at work, at the pharmacy, at the petrol station, at the shops, while out exercising and whilst visiting people they shouldn't be. Thousands of people still coming into the country - not tested.

Our lock down is half hearted - the Govt didn't want to STOP transmission, just slow it down.

AmelieTaylor I was just hoping the cases would be a lot lower each day than they are, but I can see what your saying, zero transmission is impossible.

I think it’s possible to get it very low but you have to follow China’s draconian measures to do so. No one goes out, food is delivered etc etc. Not for me!

From work? Millions of us go to work every day. And from supermarkets.

Literally millions of us still go to work every day, the NHS is just the tip of the iceberg!

I think it’s a good question because petrol stations, shops, exercising surely no one is going in coughing and we are mostly social distancing. So infection rate will be low. Far lower than in Feb/March when we had no idea what to do. It seem unlikely to me that will have a spike like this again as we will all be on alert for signs.

@Newgirls you don't have to be coughing to spread it, there's nothing to look out for when people are spreading the virus before they are showing sypmtoms. I could be now, you could be you don't know until the symptoms start. The rate of transmission has slowed because theres less contact between people.

Because there are still far too many people out and about unnecessarily.

Lots of people are still working.

Complete social distancing is impossible in nurseries, schools and food production/packaging lines.

We're not testing and tracing and isolating to try to eradicate it. That's why people are still getting infected.

It was always going to keep spreading...millions of people are still going to work every day!

I'm just incredulous that people dont realise that millions upon millions of people are still having to work every day. Where do people think even basic things like food and gas and electricity come from if everyone is sat isolated in their house?
So yes, people are out and about. Even those who arent need to go out and buy essentials so are mixing with people in supermarkets etc

Do those figures account for people still 'in employment' but furloughed?

People in care homes and similar too.

Errol - Interesting point. I think they are in the 51% as it says "it is not known if those who say they are not working from home are in their usual place of employment or had stopped working".

So a decent % of that 51% are probably furloughed. I've seen one stat that suggests about 20% of the workforce is right now so that would suggest about 30% are still going to work? About 10 million people.

This is why they need to track and trace, because it's a very good question and so far no one really knows! Mad, isnt it?

I am 100% staying at home, live alone and have all food delivered but have had daily visits from nurses post surgery and ended up getting it. There was nothing more I, or they could have done to prevent it.

There's many that aren't following social distancing and many of my neighbours have grandparents/ grandchildren etc visiting homes daily.
It's pissing me off to be honest as we aren't going anywhere near our elderly relations and are following the rules as asked.

All the while people do things that they aren't meant to, transmission will happen. They could be asymptomatic as well, which is a huge problem as people insist' their fine'.

Well they may be, but someone else may not be so lucky.
