Neighbour running hairdressers from her house

My neighbour is a hairdresser, she has a salon in town which is obviously closed at the moment. I’ve noticed lots of cars coming and going to hers over the last few weeks which has annoyed me but I’ve not said or done anything just carried on following the lockdown rules. I was putting the bins out last week and she had her back door open and I thought I could have seen someone sitting in her kitchen with a hairdressing gown on but then one of the DC shouted me and I thought no more of it, but it’s particularly warm here today and she has her back door open and we’ve been in the garden all morning and I’ve seen 2 people come stay about an hour and leave. She sweeps up kitchen in between, I’m assuming they’re having their hair cut but don’t know for sure. She lives with her partner who is bald so it wasn’t him I saw with hairdressing gown on. Should I report her to someone, have a word with her? No previous issues, normal neighbourly interactions.

Report . We will never get out of this lockdown if people keep bending the rules to suit them.

I suspect it's a grey area and she may be allowed to work. It's very low risk, one person at a time.

They shut salons as they are busy places.

I'm a therapist and I'm still seeing people one on one (mental health appointments are allowed)

Can I give my clients home appointments?
No. This would be against the government's strict social distancing instructions which say you must stay at home apart from essential travel. We need to do all we can to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Also - please bear in mind that your insurance will probably not cover you if you normally work in a salon or barbershop.

She can easily become infected and pass on the virus to many clients! How can she stay 2 meters away when cutting hair?!

It's very low risk, one person at a time.

The virus will spread slower but it will still spread if she or any client has it!

Lockdown isn’t meant to stop the spreading of the virus.

You are allowed to work, if you need to.

@Ninkanink you are allowed to work as long as you can maintain social distancing; which you can't when cutting hair; unless she has exceptionally long arms

Yes definitely against the restrictions and of course hair dressing is very close contact.

Unfortunately though, as with so many of these types of threads, you will get answers saying "it's fine"..."that's fine"..."perfectly fine" ...

When this is all over, personally I would also make a mental note not to use that particualr hairdresser, or any who have carried on working, and only use those you believe did stick to the restrictions.

It's meant to do exactly that. So that the spread is slower and the health service is not overwhelmed

Working from home with fewer clients together in one space at any one time carries far less risk.

Don't report. Everyone knows the rules and the risks, they're adults and choosing to risk it. Don't sour your relationship with a neighbour over this. Is it her only income or does her DH work?

I don't think it's acceptable as we've got a 2m rule and also she's got lots of people coming in and the likely chance is they're touching things. Are they wearing gloves, also is she working with a face mask and gloves on for protection. If not, it has to be reported.

Yes, it is. People should stay away from others as much as possible to stop the virus from spreading.

Unless she has 2 metre long arms, how can she avoid possibly getting infected from one of her customers?! And then potentially spread it on to other customers?

By descreasing the incidences of risk of catching/spreading it. Which one does by, ohhh let’s see, for example, not running a salon with multiple people confined in the same space for an extended period of time, but, for example, seeing fewer people, individually, and taking whatever sensible precautions one can.

People are allowed to work if they want to/need to. People are allowed to leave their homes and do pretty much whatever they want, except congregate in huge numbers.

People are also allowed to work in their home. They have been told to minimise contact/social distance as much as possible, but they are, in fact, still allowed to choose to disregard that. In any case, one-on-one does not go against the guidelines, social distancing or not.

If you or others don’t know how to apply the guidelines within the law, that’s your problem. You don’t need to try to police others’ actions and/or report them for things they’re actually allowed to do.

Is it? What about the Govt asking you to work from home if you can? I think some would regard this as a grey area (although it is madness to do it imo).

I’m in a different jurisdiction. Here they were explicit. Hairdressers working in any way risk losing their license, being fined, and up to a year in jail. It is considered to be an extremely risky interaction and while we all wish we could get our roots touched up or get a trim, it won’t be happening any time soon.

So to answer a few questions, her DH is an accountant and is working from home as far as I know. I mean I need my roots doing as much as anyone but I wouldn’t be able to take the risk! I wasn’t sure how the rules worked in relation to this so thought I’d put it out on a public forum rather than waste police time. I’m a frontline NHS worker so now how stretched everyone is at the moment.
