How can all the Tesco slots go in 1 minute?

I’ve waited up until midnight again to try to get a slot for delivery. I get put in a queue at 11.50pm and then I get to try and book a slot. Last night it was 12.06 and they had all gone. Tonight was 12.01 and they had all gone. I don’t understand how an entire day’s worth of slots can go so quickly Sad

Tesco seem to vary. Our usual click and collect is drive in, pallet wheeled out behind the car and attendant retreats. Everything is bagged and I lift it into the boot. The car behind is a good 7 -10 meters away and it's single file. A little like a petrol station.

Last Saturday we had to use another local Tesco but the service wasn't as good.
The attendant wanted me to open the car window so she could hand the receipt to me.
The cars were parked to collect the shopping side by side. Although it looked at first grace that there were two meters between barriers, That swiftly was reduced to zero as people parked large cars then bent down to retrieve shopping, almost heads together!

I drove a bit further away to park up and the chap wheeled my shopping up to my car.
He's already wheeled it to a vacant slot but it just wasn't safe to exit the car so I didn't.

They were helpful, but don't assume they understand social distancing. Most people comply as everyone else appears to be fine with it when it's not safe.

Morrison's however have been fabulous, they load up the car for you, as do Asda.

Yes that was funny. At 12 I booked a slot for 11 May Tesco delivery. And was pleased to get it. That was on the website. One of the last days on the calendar.
I have just read this thread and went back to check the availability of the dates before and after that and to be expected they were all gone.
But it was showing the following week on the app as free all week up to 18th May so I booked 18th May. Checked out and looked again to see what was free and now it's showing that every single slot for that week has gone.

You refresh the screen and although the date turns over to the next day no slots appear, or they are all apparently taken. I dont think they are really taken. They are probably reserved for later or for customers on the priority list. Or they are being witheld from you for a reason.

It looks to me like Tesco are applying a crude method to ration the slots and prevent anyone booking more than one slot in a week. The argument being that one a week should be enough even for a family. So if you already have one order pending you get thrown into the queue or shown no slots when your turn does come up. This happened to me a few times until I figured it out.

Throwing people into a queue when they are already shopping on the site is very poor practice and very unfair. Imagine going into the store, filling your basket and then being told you have got to go outside again and queue. Excuse me? I am already in your store and you want me to queue up with people who just arrived.

There are a ways to game the system but I am not going to discuss them on a public forum.

I've given up on Tesco here, but I managed to get an Asda for May 4th.
They release the slots at 10pm so try then if you have an Asda that deliver to you of course.

Have you tried at different times of the day. I looked on the Tesco website yesterday afternoon about 5pm and they had several delivery slots available for today. They weren’t there half an hour earlier and were available on the website for over an hour. I think it’s a myth that they’re released at midnight. Good luck.

Thanks to those posting about them opening up a whole week. When I tried at midnight only showed the 11th and all gone. Now it's snowing slots for everyday from the 12th to the 18th.

It's not. They release slots every night at midnight. Some might appear during the day but midnight is when the whole says worth is released

Thank you MumsNetters for posting that Tesco have opened up another week of slots - I have now booked a slot for about four weeks away. Bet I'm back to the midnight queues in future though!

We have given up with Tesco and moved to Asda click & collect. We always get a slot with them.

Now that's weird. When I went on my phone and booked my delivery slot (16 May early morning), there were lots of slots choose from in that entire week (12th to 18th) across all days. Now that I've booked one slot, there's nothing on the other days either. I have to wonder if Tesco has built in an algorithm that not only prevents you from more than one delivery per day (as it did) but more than one delivery per week.

@eggysmum i definitely think there is because I have looked on my app and seen spaces. My husband has looked at the same time when he already has a slot and cannot see them.

On the app I see two different messages:

  • the week where I have a delivery slot booked, all days don't list times and say 'slots for this date have all been filled'

  • the weeks where I don't have a slot booked, all days list the time slots but have 'unavailable' against them

This tells me they've definitely re-programmed so that you can only have one delivery per calendar week (which seems to run Mon-Sun).

*(Not that I'm bothered, you understand - I'm more interested from the control/programming aspect!)^
