Flour!

Just curious really...I have seen a lot of comments on here re: people desperate to get hold of flour but it's apparently all sold out. Do the people who want flour normally use it on a regular basis pre Coronavirus? What's it to make? Can't be bread as that is available in all the shops. Is everyone just making lots of cakes?! First it was hand gel, then toilet rolls now its flour. I didn't realise so many people "needed" flour. I have an open bag in my cupboard that has sat there for ages!

We bake our own bread, always have. I’m sorry but a slice of hovis is not the same!

Cakes, scone, pancakes every Saturday for breakfast. Pizza dough, flatbreads, Yorkshire puddings. To make a white sauce

We make a lot of our food from scratch and use a lot of flour

Hugglespuffed · 18/04/2020 13:03

It has been back in stock this week in my local supermarkets (according to facebook groups)

Prairi3Fire · 18/04/2020 13:03

Soup, gravy, cakes and buscuits( never by shop), sauces, pies, pastry....

No shortage here in Lidl and co op. Sainsbury sells out quicker but still sells it.

AngusThermopyle · 18/04/2020 13:03

We do make bread as that's our preferred way to get bread! We also make Yorkshires, cakes, pizza based, biscuits, naan bread etc. I use plain flour to thicken and make gravy too.

augustusglupe · 18/04/2020 13:03

Just checked, it was 60p, even better!!

Guttersnipe · 18/04/2020 13:06

Pre lockdown, I would buy one or two large bags of flour every week. I make my own bread. I also use it for pastry, sauces, cakes (at least one a week), sometimes a stodgy pudding, all sorts of things really. I've even been known to make my own biscuits, hot cross buns, etc, the sort of thing I associate with Easter.

The last few weeks I have had to buy shop bread and cakes and it feels like a real sacrifice.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 18/04/2020 13:06

We've been making bread for over 10 years. We have flour but no yeast so we're looking at other options

Bread - both with and without bread machine.

Plain flour pastry - tarts, cornish pasties - both good for packed lunches, pancakes, yorkshire puds, crumble toppings- good way to get fruit into kids - pies savoury and dessert, small amounts thickening sauces making roux.

Self raising - small cakes good for packed lunches and freezing for when needed - scones, dumplings seem to make stew palatable for kids.

Making more bread and fewer cakes at minute, eggs and butter more limited than usual, as can't pop to shops for a daily loaf - large family soon go through a loaf.

I bought the brithday cake needed this week rather than made and will ahve to think about one needed in few weeks time.

Flour is usually bought with monthly shop and sat in cupboard waiting to be used and usually by end of month need more.

FireandFury · 18/04/2020 13:07

We are baking a fair bit here; lemon drizzle & banana loafs, brownies by the boat load (we are being neighbourly and baking for the street too!), bread and pastries.

We’ve also been cooking a fair bit some recipes requiring a fair bit of flour.

Small home made pizza are usually made once a month as well - gets vegtables into school packed lunches.

I'm doing a lot less baking than usual.

EvilPea · 18/04/2020 13:09

I saw some normal Sainsbury’s plain flour for sale on eBay for £18.

ScrapThatThen · 18/04/2020 13:09

I buy flour about once a month usually one plain and one self-raising. Between me and dds we use it for Yorkshire's, cheese sauces, muffins, pancakes, biscuits, flatbread, occasionally bread.

Massivejugs · 18/04/2020 13:10

I bake bread and a cake every week. Sometimes make my own pasta and tortillas if I have got time at the weekend. Sweet and/or savoury crumbles, scones etc., etc..

I buy a nice loaf of bread most weeks but everything else is made at home.

I buy 3kg of bread flour, 2kg of self raising and 1kg of plain flour once a month.

I have upped my flour order to 5kg of bread flour, 3kg of self raising flour of 2kg of plain for the time being.

milveycrohn · 18/04/2020 13:10

I use plain flour for pastry. Self-raising for cakes, and strong flour for bread.
All of these (pastry, cakes, and bread) are available to buy in the shops.
That does not stop me from sometimes making these things myself.
In the same way, I usually make my own meals, rather than buy a microwave meal, etc
I have some plain and SR flour, but strong flour for bread is very difficult to buy at the moment

Rinoachicken · 18/04/2020 13:11

I use plain flour on a regular basis in sauces and for baking. DH needs gluten free though and not been able to get any GF flour since lockdown so he’s not been able to enjoy any of the biscuits and cakes the kids have been making

Missingminieggs · 18/04/2020 13:12

We use a lot of bread flour to make pizza.
Yorkshire puddings for toad in the hole
Pancakes
Sauces

I don't bake much, but I'd have probably made cakes with the dc as they're off school.

enjoyingSun · 18/04/2020 13:13

We found a local mill that delivery strong bread flour 16 kg.

Not sure I can use that much self raising and plain but the bread flour we calculated will last a month at the moment.

GoFiguire · 18/04/2020 13:15

I make my own pasta. I haven’t been able to make ravioli in weeks.

ohmysoul · 18/04/2020 13:17

I regularly use flour to bake cakes and biscuits, make pancakes, pizza dough and bread. I also use it for playdough and salt dough. That's no different now we're on lockdown but I am finding it hard to buy flour every 2 weeks like I normally do.

BlueGheko · 18/04/2020 13:20

My local corner shop has plenty and has done throughout lock down along with pretty much anything else you could ever need. I would recommend trying smaller shops.

IHaveAMagicBean · 18/04/2020 13:21

I bake!

I didn’t realise my lifestyle impacted on you op.

I make bread, cakes, Yorkshire puddings,

I’m spending a lot more time at home, hence a lot more baking.

Sorry, do I need your permission?

APurpleSquirrel · 18/04/2020 13:24

Ohh DH has just come back from town & managed to get 00 flour from the bag-free shop. More pizza yay! 🍕

iamabox · 18/04/2020 13:26

We use a flour lot in normal life. Yorkshire Puddings, pancales, pie, fairy cakes, scones, biscuits and in sauces soups etc, but although I haven't found any in the Tesco or Asda near me for weeks, my local corner shop has had plenty in.

This week, I've baked 2 pies, 12 fairy cakes, pancakes for breakfast and Yorkshire Puds..and used flour for a sauce.

tiredvommachine · 18/04/2020 13:28

Tesco had flour today, luckily my daughter works there and got a bag of plain and self raising for me. Hoping this is the start of more stock coming back into the big stores 🤞
