Flour!

Just curious really...I have seen a lot of comments on here re: people desperate to get hold of flour but it's apparently all sold out. Do the people who want flour normally use it on a regular basis pre Coronavirus? What's it to make? Can't be bread as that is available in all the shops. Is everyone just making lots of cakes?! First it was hand gel, then toilet rolls now its flour. I didn't realise so many people "needed" flour. I have an open bag in my cupboard that has sat there for ages!

Yorkshire puddings! I use quite a lot of plain flour Blush

vickibee · 18/04/2020 12:50

Think people with young kids are using it to make play dough. I have bread flour for ages but have run out of dried yeast which I cant get either.

Pickpick101 · 18/04/2020 12:51

Baking with small children , baking because they have more time to try these things. That's us anyway

OhClover · 18/04/2020 12:52

I don’t use a lot but I don’t want a lot either, just one packet. I wanted some to bake my daughter a second birthday cake but alas it wasn’t to be!

I think a lot of people are baking as a hobby

Aurorie11 · 18/04/2020 12:53

Pancakes every Saturday or Sunday for kids
Yorkshire pudding
White or cheese sauce for fish pie, mac cheese, cauliflower cheese etc.
Weekly cake for my Dad
Just made brownies
DS is doing school cookery at home, so cakes, biscuits, cheese straws
That's just off top of my head

Bobbiepin · 18/04/2020 12:53

Making sauces, stews, breaded chicken etc. I enjoy baking and would like to do it more but we use too much flour in our regular cooking.

Nonnymum · 18/04/2020 12:53

I think it's because we are bored. Stuck at home so starting to bake again. I already had flour in when this all started because I always have some in, normally it lasts at least 6 months probably longer, but I've used most of it up all now because I've been baking a lot more than In do normally.

Noworrieshere · 18/04/2020 12:54

Pizza dough. There are 5 of us so we use 600g of bread flour every week, have done for years. And it is hard to find right now

Christmastreedown · 18/04/2020 12:55

Well, we make pancakes every weekend. Now we have no flour and no eggs.

We use flour to thicken the cooking sauce too.

I think parents how use a lot of it to make cakes and play dough during the lockdown now.

MynameisJune · 18/04/2020 12:56

We use a lot of plain and bread flour but I’ve been able to find that. Self raising we don’t usually use but I need some for my DD’s first birthday cake. Managed to get some the other week which was good as it’s all gone again now.

Bsmirched · 18/04/2020 12:56

Our local Esso station has a Spar within it where we've been able to get flour. Might be worth checking. Yeast is available on Ebay.

BreathlessCommotion · 18/04/2020 12:57

I love baking but can't get any. Also Yorkshire puddings, pancakes, white sauces.

My dd wants to use salt dough to make some fossils, but we can't as we have none

Pinkflipflop85 · 18/04/2020 12:58

We use flour to make bacon pudding.
5 year old likes baking cakes, making pizza and making pancakes.

I have been making our own play dough for years. Have never bought it.

We buy our flour from the bakery.

winefortea · 18/04/2020 12:58

Apparently the shortage is less to do with not being able to produce enough, and more down to the fact that the industry is more geared up to delivering in industrial sized quantities, in huge carriers rather than smaller, consumer-sized packets...

VivaLeBeaver · 18/04/2020 12:58

Pancakes
Pizza bases
Katsu curry sauce
Cakes

MilkRunningOutAgain · 18/04/2020 12:58

I use quite a lot of flour in my everyday cooking, in pastry, scones, cakes, sauces, pancakes. My DD loves baking and wants to make bread and things like Chelsea Buns once we can get some strong flour, she has lots mote time to do this at the moment! We don’t usually make our own bread but if DD wants to and I can get the flour, then it would be delicious.

KittenVsBox · 18/04/2020 12:59

Pizza dough, Yorkshire puddings, pancakes (breakfast), plus cake and biscuits.
And yes, I'm making some bread. Our loaf, bought Wednesday, has gone mouldy overnight. I'll make some bread for lunch tomorrow probably. Saves a trip to the shop (I'd usually top up on bread twice week).
I'd say I usually buy flour once a week. Not seen flour since panic buying started, but a friend dropped some off at the weekend for us.

silverdollarcity · 18/04/2020 13:00

We use a lot of flour for things like pancakes, bread (I often make bread at home), sauces and various other recipes. I can get flour quite easily at the moment at our local farm shop but there is no yeast anywhere. We've managed to make some pretty decent no-yeast pizzas, as well as chapatis, and will try soda bread in the week. I would prefer to make bread than have to go to a shop to get it.

Tootletum · 18/04/2020 13:00

Not using any more than usual. But can't get hold of any. Crumble, white sauce, scones, pancakes, banana bread. Those are things I make wekly. Or daily. So I've had to modify yet more of my recipes, but on plus side tinned tomatoes are back so less need for white sauce.

APurpleSquirrel · 18/04/2020 13:00

We have a sourdough starter that is feed most days, & normally we'd bake cakes or make pizza every few weeks.
Now we're home we're baking several times a week as an activity for DC (DD usually cooks at school every week & I took DS to a cookery class weekly) & we've made pizzas a couple of times, plus some bread.
I've been to several supermarkets & no flour at all. We're out of 00 flour but still have several types of flour in my baking cupboard for now.

Megan2018 · 18/04/2020 13:01

We use lots of plain flour and bread flour-just because you can buy bread doesn’t mean we don’t prefer homemade.

We use plain to coat meat for stews, sauces, batters (pancake, yorkshire pud) so used most days eg yesterday we had pancakes for breakfast and homemade fishfingers for lunch and stew for dinner-all used flour.

We don’t make many cakes, probably only monthly at most.

augustusglupe · 18/04/2020 13:01

I got plain flour a couple of weeks ago from Ocado. I got a massive bag, basic stuff and needs a bit of sieving. But for 85p it’s great!! Think I may just carry on buying cheap plain flour instead of my usual Homepride.
I use plain flour for pretty much everything. It’s Self Raising that tends to just sit there.

WhateverHappenedToBathPearls · 18/04/2020 13:01

We're food shopping no more than once a week so having to bake bread if we run out before the weekly shop.
Also doing cakes and biscuits with the toddler.

Normally I work full time and don't bake at all then!

Youcunnyfunt · 18/04/2020 13:01

I bake most of my bread products - loaves, buns, pizza dough, etc. Don’t usually buy premade. Anything that usually you use a bit of flour for - thickening sauce, cauliflower cheese, pancakes, pan frying fish etc. I use diff flour depending what it is, cornflour, gram flour, quinoa flour, gluten free, strong bread flour.

eurochick · 18/04/2020 13:02

We use quite a bit normally. I do a fair bit of home baking and we bake around a loaf a week in the bread maker. Since lockdown we've been doing more of both - baking to keep the child amused and bread because our local bakery has closed
