Flour!

Just curious really...I have seen a lot of comments on here re: people desperate to get hold of flour but it's apparently all sold out. Do the people who want flour normally use it on a regular basis pre Coronavirus? What's it to make? Can't be bread as that is available in all the shops. Is everyone just making lots of cakes?! First it was hand gel, then toilet rolls now its flour. I didn't realise so many people "needed" flour. I have an open bag in my cupboard that has sat there for ages!

Strange question, but...
I used self raising to make a chocolate and cherry pudding last night, baked sourdough for lunch today yesterday evening, pancakes for breakfast today. I use plain flour for sauces, crumbles, biscuits; self raising for cakes; bread flour for bread and we have a pizza oven so I use 00 flour for pizza. Made crumpets last week.
I've been stalking a mill for weeks to replenish supplies and getting some yesterday was harder than getting Glastonbury tickets.
The shops might have bread, but we only have a tiny Coop in town and like hell am I going there ever day for bread, it's crowded and just awful. Supermarket is half hour drive away. People bake and cook from scratch, who'd have thought it?

We bake a lot. We don’t buy cakes and biscuits and tend to bake them at home.
We used to bake bread a lot but I can’t keep up with teenagers so that’s just an occasional thing now.
Dcs are a big fan of pancakes.
Ds1 wants to buy a waffle maker and start making home made waffles after he had them on holiday.

TowerRingInferno · 18/04/2020 16:06

I normally bake a lot but am not doing so at the moment because we can’t get flour.

Crimsonnightlotus · 18/04/2020 16:15

We use a lot of flour, but since dc is allergic to wheat, we use rice flour or other gf ones. Seems like there are no shortage, unlike non dairy milk people were buying as alternative at one stage.

Rebelwithallthecause · 18/04/2020 16:17

Before lockdown I would make fresh bread every other day, pizza dough and dough balls once a week, scones once a week, yorkshire puddings occasionally, pastry for sausage rolls and pies.

Its been quite costly buying all these ready made when flour was unavailable.

steff13 · 18/04/2020 17:37

I always bake, so I always have flour on hand. But baking really helps with my anxiety, which has been crazy high lately, so I've been baking even more.

SheldonSaysSo1 · 18/04/2020 17:47

Due to being gluten free I bake to replace anything that has flour in. Often I use it for sauces and pancakes, then I bake scones/cakes/biscuits every other week rather than buying them.

TJH130 · 18/04/2020 17:53

Didnt people just buy it because others were?

nellythenarwhal · 18/04/2020 17:56

I use lots of flour- white sauce, cheese sauce, Yorkshire puddings, cake, bread...

Massivejugs · 18/04/2020 17:57

OP, I don't think its a strange question, in face it reminds me of one of my old friends! She would ask exactly the same question, she cooked but would buy a cheese sauce and or almost anything else that could be bought. She might have had a bag of flour in her house but wouldn't have used it very often if at all.

Angel2702 · 18/04/2020 18:01

We always use more flour in the Easter holiday for all the Easter baking we always do. Plus we are eating at home more than we would so having to make more meals from scratch than we would do usually. We can get flour but not yeast.

mrshoho · 18/04/2020 18:03

We've been baking more than we would normally. Have almost run out now and hard to find anywhere.

Stellaris22 · 18/04/2020 18:03

Pancakes and sauces. We have ham and cheese pancakes regularly, or used to, as can't find any anywhere. Not the end of the world, just annoying.

AlexaShutUp · 18/04/2020 18:05

Well, we're baking more at the moment as we can't go out. Have a Victoria sponge in the oven right now. Smile But still using up flour that has been sitting in the cupboard for ages!

daisyjgrey · 18/04/2020 18:06

The greengrocer has some and I got the last bag!

I said to the owner ‘I’d kiss you if I was aloud!’ Grin

Pinkarsedfly · 18/04/2020 18:09

Allowed, fgs

Inkpaperstars · 18/04/2020 18:44

Reasonable question OP, I had been wondering. I have not used flour for years, can't remember the last time I did. I think DP used it in small amounts recently to coat tofu or something? But generally we don't use. I am not an accomplished cook, if I had more skills maybe I would use it.

NCforthisMarch · 18/04/2020 20:19

Lots f people baking more : hobby/kids entertainment/ to reduce shopping trips

My company has produced record output of flour in last week: sales are up over 30 pc year on year, and were more than double in late March

WickedGoodDoge · 19/04/2020 07:02

@Snaptheirfingers The recipe is:

200g self raising flour
100g caster sugar
125ml milk
85ml vegetable oil
1 large egg
1t vanilla

Mix together by hand- don’t over mix, lumps are OK.

Put a spoonful in each cupcake case (so about 1/3 is filled) then put 1t jam on top then fill the rest of each case. Bake at 190 for 20 minutes.

Let cool for 30 minutes then remove the cupcake cases, dip in melted butter (the recipe said 100g but I used a pastry brush and used about half that) then roll in caster sugar.

WickedGoodDoge · 19/04/2020 07:02

Oh, forgot- the recipe makes 8.

Triglesoffy · 19/04/2020 13:27

No organic butter left in Tesco today. Is the price going to go up or something?
