Does this mean lockdown will not be reviewed again for the next 3 weeks?

At the daily press briefing they made it quite clear that lockdown would not be lifted when the review comes on Thursday.

So will that mean that it will remain the same for the next 3 weeks until the next review?

They have been hinting that next week’s numbers of deaths are going to be bad. I would expect further rises.

But cases are going down so it should get better within weeks.

PictPost · 13/04/2020 20:37

moomoogalicious* us too, DS is unrecognisable at the minute. I'm contemplating asking school if we can just roam their grounds to try and give him some connection with the rest of his life. Wishing you well, know it's beyond difficult

picklemewalnuts · 13/04/2020 20:41

When we plateau and then start to drop, things will gradually be restarted.
It will depend where we are up to with testing as well.

We need to keep the shielded people safe, so they will still be secluded.
Some exposure for people who are not in high risk groups, so the NHS can cope with the numbers, would allow economic activity to restart.

Who knows exactly what it will look like. It won't be a total lifting, that's for sure.

Barbie222 · 13/04/2020 20:44

They don't dare give us more than 3 weeks out loud at a time, but you can see how they are dropping little clues here and there about how long it's really going to be.

MummytoCSJH · 13/04/2020 20:48

@moomoogalicious @pictpost I feel for you. My son has adhd but hes also only 5 so he really doesn't understand. I am more drained now I am at home than when I was at uni and work. No meds due to his age and his support has been halted. We can't even go anywhere to burn off any energy. Thinking of going for a walk in a bit (haven't been out today) since I think it will be quiet.

MereDintofPandiculation · 13/04/2020 20:53

The "shielded" group have been told to lock down until 13 weeks after the main lockdown started. I think they always intended the main lock down to be 13 weeks but didn't want to tell us.

(It was a 12 week lockdown for the shielded group but didn't start until after 1 week of the main lockdown).

topcat2014 · 13/04/2020 20:54

It is due for review this Thursday, but was never going to be lifted this time anyway.

Furlough in place till end of May. So will be at least then.

helpfulperson · 13/04/2020 21:04

I think that honestly they don't know. Even in countries with similar lockdowns ie spain, italy and france, the rates of infections and deaths have been quite different. They will do what they say they are doing. They have reviewed now and there is no change. There will be a formal review in 3 weeks time and at that point they will either say 'another 3 weeks' or maybe introduce some small changes.

Arrowfanatic · 13/04/2020 21:17

If anybody thought this lockdown would only be for 3 weeks they were kidding themselves. But it was obvious the government couldn't go from "social distancing" to "2 months lockdown" overnight. There would have been panic and uproar. This needed to be eased into, and by 3 weeks people are starting to find their groove so another 3 weeks although hard isn't as disheartening. More of a "we've done 3 weeks, we can do 3 more"

moomoogalicious · 13/04/2020 21:37

@PictPost unfortunately my dd doesnt accept any help to lift her mood and is dragging the rest of the household with her. Wishing you well too and anyone else struggling with the lockdown

Actionhasmagic · 13/04/2020 21:39

I’ve booked my next haircut and colour for August 1st as that’s when I think it might be lifted properly

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 13/04/2020 21:49

I predict that the lockdown will be until the end of May. This is pure conjecture, but for the fact that that's when the govt have committed to pay furloughed workers til, and I don't think they will be able to afford ti for much longer than that.

ilovecakeandwine · 13/04/2020 22:16

Just because the government is paying furloughed till end of May that doesn't mean that's when the lockdown will end . The government does not know that far in advance . Also lockdown will be a gradual thing so perhaps some non essential shops and small businesses etc . Other places will probably be a lot later so therefore many will be off work longer Maybe until June and beyond.

doublemix · 13/04/2020 22:28

When the lockdown is eased by letting some return to work will this be the point we can see family again? I know it's very hard for everyone but I'm really struggling.

lubeybooby · 13/04/2020 22:32

Other countries lockdowns have all been 8 weeks plus, rightly so and many still ongoing. Ours is more relaxed and will take longer to get out of and away from the peak.

Settle in for the longer haul and don't keep expecting anything to change soon. It's not going to. We're one of the worst affected countries after all. This needs time.

LangClegsInSpace · 13/04/2020 23:15

We can't just have a lockdown, twiddle our thumbs for a few weeks and then lift it and expect to have any success. We need an exit strategy.

Someone asked in tonight's press briefing what the plan was and they swerved the question and said it wasn't time yet for a plan.

It is time for a plan, the whole point of a plan is you make it before you need to implement it. Not having a plan until the moment you need to do something is called winging it.

Without any sort of exit strategy it doesn't matter when lockdown is lifted because we'll be straight back into it soon enough. The important question is how, not when.

WHO had a lot of things to say about exit strategies in tonight's briefing:

notangelinajolie · 13/04/2020 23:20

I hope we stay in lockdown for a good while yet. Macron has just announced another 4. I'd settle for that for now.

DroppedBoxxedRuth · 13/04/2020 23:37

I'm in Melbourne, ours has been extended until 11 May and our numbers are really good.

I think people need to think, this is how life is going to be for at least 6 months.

Dh said in Feb that it's probably going to be 6-12 months so my thinking has been like that since the start.

False hope isn't helping anyone. People can't be mentally prepared for this when the goal posts are moved regularly.

BenjiB · 14/04/2020 04:25

@moomoogalicious Us too. I really understand how you feel. My son usually boards at a specialist residential college. He started there in September and we’d just got some sort of Normal life back. I now spend 90% of the day trying to stop him eating and then dealing with the backlash of that, washing his clothes constantly and cleaning the toilet amongst other things. College are risk assessing each student and will let us know next week if he can go back. Its flipping awful. We can’t even go out for a walk as it’s too difficult.

angorarabbit · 14/04/2020 07:33

I feel for everyone with so many different challenges. I am locked down alone, which probably sounds like bliss to many, but is beginning to feel desperately isolating.

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 14/04/2020 07:47

Considering some are ignoring the lockdown and considering the numbers they report at the briefing are way way lower than actual numbers, they still don't include deaths outside hospital or allow for people that are infected that haven't got a test yet etc. Wait till Friday for the figures to catch up.
The lockdown will be in place until end of June at minimum.
Airports are still open, docks are still open, people are able to go out and spread it wherever, I don't think we are near actual peak yet, just a false leak due to government reporting methods.

Russellbrandshair · 14/04/2020 07:54

For those saying full lockdown will last into June- how will that work considering mortgage companies are only giving us a three month payment holiday maximum. That runs out end of may. If lockdown lasts into June that means hundreds of thousands of people won’t be able to pay their mortgage and will lose their homes. That will result in utter chaos and there will be a backlash.

EggysMom · 14/04/2020 08:00

I have a theory that on Thursday they will announce another three weeks of lockdown. Why? Because that neatly takes us to the VE Bank Holiday Friday ... and if they lift it then, it's a bank holiday weekend giving us time to 'celebrate' coming out of lockdown.

If the numbers don't back up lifting the lockdown for that bank holiday, well, another three weeks of lockdown takes us to the Whit Monday Bank Holiday weekend ...

Redwinestillfine · 14/04/2020 08:07

Why will people loose houses? I thought the chancellor was paying 80% of salaries of those whose jobs are not continuing, and a similar deal for self employed ( monies coming in by June)

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 14/04/2020 08:12

If lockdown lasts into June that means hundreds of thousands of people won’t be able to pay their mortgage and will lose their homes.

And if they end it too early those mortgage payers could get the virus, go to hospital and die, that'll really impact on their mortgage payments.
