Does this mean lockdown will not be reviewed again for the next 3 weeks?

At the daily press briefing they made it quite clear that lockdown would not be lifted when the review comes on Thursday.

So will that mean that it will remain the same for the next 3 weeks until the next review?

Mortgage holidays & furloughing etc will change as time goes on. There's no point in basing what you think will happen on those time periods. The Govt said from the beginning that the furlough until the end of May would be extended if necessary. Yes,at some stage the rules around that will change and maybe certain businesses will have to submit viability businesses plans or something or maybe they'll drop the rate -whatever.... that date is irrelevant to when any restrictions will be lifted.

Personally I'd rather know if they're pretty sure it won't be lifted until say June. But others would prefer the continual hope of it being sooner. No matter what they say, it's not going to be what some people want to hear.

Plus, agree with their strategy or not, there's always going to be a 'wait & see' element.

Whatever happens it'll be too soon for some and too slow for others. 🤷🏻‍♀️

The longer the better as far as I'm concerned, give science, research & the NHS the best chance of success.

But im not stuck in a 19th floor flat with 5 kids or struggling with an abusive partner or children with SN & I totally empathise with those who are and NEED this to be over.

PleasantVille · 14/04/2020 08:15

That's a very simplistic view redwinestillfine, there are 1000s who have fallen through the cracks in the chancellor's schemes and are in genuine hardship.

I have no idea when the lockdown will end but it's naive to think that everyone's financially fine for another 6 weeks.

@moomoogalicious

I’ve a autistic son with adhd and learning difficulties. Government guidelines state we can travel to exercise ( if due to conditions like autism and learning difficulties you need more open space ) and you can go out more than once per day for exercise also . I’ve made a sign now for my car to go alongside the blue badge and carry all my sons school risk assessments if police ask for it x

starsparkle08 · 14/04/2020 08:16

@moomoogalicious

Hope that helps as it is a nightmare situation xx

meditrina · 14/04/2020 08:16

I think the reason there is no sign of an exit plan is that there is no imminent need for it.

It will become apparent when there is a reasonable prospect it is about to start (nit because people are banging on about it/anpbsence of it)

The formal review of the law is 3 weekly, but changes (whether lifting or making stricter) do not have to wait for the next formal review point.

London peak is widely expected to be this week, rest of country following about a fortnight later. That covers the next formal review period.

If it does go according to plan, then perhaps there will be further renewal, with the proper exit planning (and early relaxations) occurring by about the end of May. New 'summer normal' in place by mid June (time when original shielding ends).

But any projection will of course change if the spread of the disease does not follow the 'flattened peak' model

Russellbrandshair · 14/04/2020 08:18

And if they end it too early those mortgage payers could get the virus, go to hospital and die, that'll really impact on their mortgage payments

Lockdown isn’t getting rid of the virus- you do know that? If we release lockdown in September it will still exist and the second wave will happen then. Locking down is to prevent the nhs being overwhelmed at the same time not to prevent us getting covid. We are just as much at risk in sept as we will be in June.

Russellbrandshair · 14/04/2020 08:20

Also Spain and Italy are easing some restrictions now- after approx 2 months of lockdown. I imagine we will do similar

Discobar · 14/04/2020 08:22

@russellbrandshair - depends when someone starts the mortgage holiday. The Chancellor also said he would extend Furlough if need be. I think he probably will by another 3 months and "normal" life resumes in September - When the schools go back

Russellbrandshair · 14/04/2020 08:24

Personally I don’t believe we will be on full lockdown until September. That’s not what other countries are doing. Also I don’t think you can lock people down fully for 6 months and not have a backlash. People will tire of it and go out- esp in August/ summer

Northernsoullover · 14/04/2020 08:24

Russell Spain are only a week ahead in lockdown.

Russellbrandshair · 14/04/2020 08:24

Yet they are easing some restrictions now though

twinnywinny14 · 14/04/2020 08:25

I don’t have any doubt it will need continuing for some time yet. DH and I were talking last night about whether they will at some point say ‘it’s in place for another X number of weeks’ rather than ‘this will continue as long as necessary’ the standard answer at the moment is we can’t lift until the right time which we all understand but just want some timeframe so I hope they will do that this week

lynsey91 · 14/04/2020 08:26

I don't see lockdown ending before June to be honest. Whatever happens I have decided I am not going out until August at the earliest. Not sure about DH but he is starting to agree with my views

Discobar · 14/04/2020 08:26

Spain and Italy only relaxing manufacturing and construction. Pubs, cafes in Italy not expected to reopen until the New year, this was the expectation on a BBC news segment yesterday with the Italian correspondent

Russellbrandshair · 14/04/2020 08:27

New year? There won’t be any left by then. Seriously.

Yellowbutterfly1 · 14/04/2020 08:28

Unless they start recording numbers more accurately how will they actually know when we have reached the peak?
A lot of people want to know from the recorded deaths of they were from the virus or something else but happened to have the virus alongside. I doubt that information can or will be realised.

Discobar · 14/04/2020 08:31

@Russellbrandshair - yeah that's what the interviewed owners were saying too, but it's all done to social distancing which can't work in pubs, cafes and restaurants. As you say there's no vaccine so only operations that can safely enforce social distancing will open. Offices will need to reorganise desks etc but easier to do then pubs

EggBaconBeans · 14/04/2020 08:32

I am getting mighty pissed off at the dumb arse stupid questions that these idiots that call themselves journalists are asking at the coronavirus daily update.
BBC are the worst; distorting the information and reporting it as news to suit their own liberal agenda.
It's absolutely disgusting.

missclimpson · 14/04/2020 08:33

I don't think it makes much sense to talk about easing restrictions in other countries when the restrictions there were much tougher in the first place. Spain has allowed a limited numbers of workers to go back, but people are still not allowed to leave the house for exercise.

Rhianna1980 · 14/04/2020 08:40

You guys keep banging on about Spain easing their lockdown. Do you realise that even with their easing their lockdown restrictions, uk still has less restrictions in the current situation? They were not allowed to go for any daily exercise, they were only allowed out to buy food only, end of. And construction workers were not allowed to work unlike here were it is business as usual for that sector. They had complete lockdown.

HuntIdeas · 14/04/2020 08:40

I’m pretty sure they will ease some of the restrictions by June / July. They will want the second wave in the middle of summer, when the NHS is traditionally quietest

Also, countries in the Southern Hemisphere don’t seem to be hit as hard as the northern hemisphere so hopefully the summer wave won’t be as bad

JustVisiting9 · 14/04/2020 08:46

I think there is a big concern about easing restrictions.

I keep seeing people talking about "when lockdown is over". Someone on our village Facebook page is already planning a "huge party" on the village green to celebrate the end of lockdown and VE Day!

The reality is that there will be a gradual lifting - we will perhaps see some shops permitted to re-open, subject to similar social distancing rules that supermarkets have.

We might see some children back in schools, maybe part time or just certain year groups, allowing classrooms to be adapted to enforce social distancing.

Anyone with a cough or fever, no matter how mild, will be told to stay home. People who can work from home will be told to continue doing so.
Large gatherings e.g. parties, concerts, football matches will still be banned. We might be allowed small gatherings, e.g. seeing family at home, perhaps even small weddings. Sporting events might be allowed behind closed doors, while the pubs remain closed.

I seem to recall that at one of the daily press conferences, before the full lockdown, the Prime Minister said he thought we would have restrictions for about 12 weeks. So I think we'll see restrictions starting to gradually lift during June, subject to the numbers and possibly subject to a better understanding of the risk of reinfection and better antibody testing.

User202004 · 14/04/2020 08:47

think the government are frightened that if they give so much of a whiff of lifting lockdown that the idiots that have barely abided will be out in in their droves before it is safe to do so.

I disagree, I think the French approach gives hope and shows there is light at the end of the tunnel. If people have enough and feel like their is no end in sight, they may then flout the rules out of exasperation. For the well-being of those suffering in lockdown I really hope our government follows a similar approach down the line of giving a date where some restrictions will start to lift.

GinUnicorn · 14/04/2020 08:48

@Rebellenny it won’t cause harm your braces being on a bit longer. You’ll need to wear a retainer to stop movement anyway.

Dentist are hoping to open for emergencies soon but we don’t have PPE gear and as it involves being close to mouths at the moment it’s just to risky. Hopefully this will change soon but brush carefully and thoroughly and your teeth will be lovely and straight Flowers

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 14/04/2020 08:49

Lockdown isn’t getting rid of the virus- you do know that? If we release lockdown in September it will still exist and the second wave will happen then

You do know that the minister's want to be over the curve to minimise the spread yes?
It will be better for everyone to release lockdown when there are fewer people with the virus, otherwise what's the point? I thought that was pretty obvious.

Release when 200000 people have it and it'll cause chaos, release when 2000 people have it and the chaos will be lessened.

Ultimately, due to lack of tests, lack of lockdown and people being pig headed, the virus is here for a very very long time. Timing the lock down repeal is going to be critical and I think a staged release will be needed over several months, beginning in June. This time next week we'll likely have easily passed 20000 dead, bit more of a concern to government right now.
