Anyone had a go at cutting their own hair yet?

I’d been putting off getting mine done for ages and ages before lockdown and now I’ve just had enough of it. I pretty much always have it in a ponytail or plaits so I think I’m just going to wash it, plait enough of it to get hair bands on them get the kitchen scissors and cut so there’s about an inch below the hairband.

How bad could it be, not like I’m seeing anyone I know apart from DH who has badly shaved his own head, and my 17 month old DD whose fringe I have already made a disaster.

Has anyone already had a go? How good or bad did it turn out?

I won't even consider it, my hair is cut in all sorts of shapes including an undercut, so it needs regular and on time maintenance so I can't tidy it up to make it look better. Just flipping my hair over the now non undercut and just letting it grow. When this is over I will have lopsided hair growth.Grin

Yep, I’ve been doing my own hair for years.

Wannabangbang · 15/04/2020 09:31

Yes turned out really well, followed a youtube tutorial on layering my hair. Looks really good

I.did the bunch right at the front of my head and cut it level with my mouth. Came out fine. The back wasn't long enough to go that far though, so wasn't included and will have to wait

Did mine yesterday with the ponytail method. Used my 50p IKEA scissors!
Am delighted with the result. It won't be perfect, but I have got rid of my dried out ends and have nice pouffy layers.

Am going to attack DH with the scissors soon... he's got a bit of an Einstein thing going on!

I heard yesterday that some hairdressers are talking people through a hair cut on a video call! I don't think I would be brave enough to either do the cut or be the one receiving the cut :)

I did the MN haircut last night but positioned the pony more in the middle of my parting rather than at the front of my head. Took maybe 4 inches off and I'm very happy with the result, looking healthier and with no scary mullet vibes!

I clippered mine all off last week - ‘all’ being all bar 1.6mm on top and 0.9mm back and sides. It’s pretty uncompromising but I’m glad I’ve done it. Always kind of wanted to ... I intend to grow the sides and back to the length of the top, and scissor the top as it gets longer. I do need to take a bit more off the top as it grows out, as it’s got a couple of mm of bleach left on the tips and looks a bit 80s.

LittleRen · 04/05/2020 13:33

@Minai sorry to resurrect this thread but can I ask what dye you used? I am about to do the same and I have three box dyes which I am scared to use and now an esalon order coming... I basically don't want my blonde to go green. I dont have many highlights left as they have grown so far down.

Zisforstripyoss · 04/05/2020 13:43

I've done mine and the DC fringes. It's fine, I have a little spirit level thing to make sure it's even. DH has clippers but he's not touched it yet.

Had a go at my fringe : didn't go well! I should have watched a u tube tutorial really but I thought ' how hard can it be?'

I used esalon and it was brilliant, such a good match! I have auburn/brown hair but it’s lightened as I’m naturally dark brown. Good on my (many) greys, I’m a total convert.

LittleRen · 04/05/2020 20:23

@Bellendejour happy to hear a good review. I haven’t dyed my own hair for years, the blonde highlights are bugging me and I want to go brunette again - I am very brown anyway as not many highlights. Now is the perfect time to try hey! I have an esalon order coming this week hopefully!
