Anyone had a go at cutting their own hair yet?

I’d been putting off getting mine done for ages and ages before lockdown and now I’ve just had enough of it. I pretty much always have it in a ponytail or plaits so I think I’m just going to wash it, plait enough of it to get hair bands on them get the kitchen scissors and cut so there’s about an inch below the hairband.

How bad could it be, not like I’m seeing anyone I know apart from DH who has badly shaved his own head, and my 17 month old DD whose fringe I have already made a disaster.

Has anyone already had a go? How good or bad did it turn out?

My daughter is currently hacking away at the poor dogs very shaggy hair do. Being bribed with dog biscuits and looking very unimpressed 😬

Chiyo666 · 12/04/2020 19:34

Yep we all look like Lloyd from dumb and dumber.

Beechview · 12/04/2020 19:35

I have!
I have hair well below my shoulders so just followed a YouTube clip about using 4 hair bands and cutting.
Got rid of all my dry split ends and it looks fine. It’s a bit choppy but it’s fine.
I dyed it as well so no more greys too. Looks way better.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 12/04/2020 19:35

I did the ponytail at the front (aka MN haircut) and it worked fine, even using kitchen scissors. I hate having haircuts so just going to do this from now on.

rosy71 · 12/04/2020 19:42

I had mine cut a week before lockdown so it'll be ok for a bit. 🤞

YogaLite · 12/04/2020 19:43

I often trim mine via ponytail method , sometimes do a top ponytail shorter and cut it in for wispiness.

Also cut my ds hair last week and it looks ok.

expatinspain · 12/04/2020 19:43

No and I won't be. I'll just wait for the hairdresser to open again like most people. I dread to think what it would look like if I tried. I only have kitchen scissors for starters 😂

Juanmorebeer · 12/04/2020 19:44

I let my 8yr old cut mine into a Bob. Because wtf else is there to do

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 12/04/2020 19:46

I cut my fringe the day before yesterday and it’s passable but not great. I think I’m going to let it grow out for the rest of lockdown!

lorisparkle · 12/04/2020 19:47

I cut mine using the pony tail tip on Mumsnet and a clip on YouTube. I loved doing it and have had a couple more goes at it since to get the right length. As no one will really see it for a while and it was annoying me and just went for it!

CheekyWeeGobshite · 12/04/2020 19:48

I have given DH and 1 of the kids a short back and sides. They actually look bloody good, if I do say so myself.

Dd highlighted my hair and that turned out pretty well too. I'm going to grow it a bit before either I or anyone else in the family goes near me with scissors

riotlady · 12/04/2020 19:49

No but I just cancelled my wedding (will reschedule for next year) so feel like I might as well go for it now!

Has anyone got any more details on the pony tail method? Do you literally just stick it in a pony tail at the front and lop it off? Are people using hairdressing scissors or just kitchen scissors?

vera99 · 12/04/2020 19:51

@Floralista some things are so funny and so beautiful I'm crying....

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 12/04/2020 19:58

God no! I've got very curly hair and there's far too much room for disaster.

I have coloured it though, my first attempt at using box dye for nearly 20 years. It said dark blonde on the box but it's more mid brown on my hair so I'll be queuing outside the hairdressers for highlights when they reopen! It looks ok but I prefer being blonde.

HarrietSchulenberg · 12/04/2020 20:07

I took 6 inches off mine and turned it into a bob to the nape of my neck. Even sectioned it and cut some layers.
Start with wet hair. Put it in a low ponytail at the back, cut hair off below hairband (the hardest bit and it feels like hacking, despite having very sharp scissors) then fluff it out and check for loose ends. Layer it in sections.
Mine's OK. It helps that it's thick and wavy so hides anything any mistakes quite well. I've paid money for worse haircuts, TBH.

BillieLurk · 12/04/2020 20:07

I’d seriously tempted to do the MN haircut. 😬 Also only have kitchen scissors.

Eh. What’s the worst that could happen? 🤷‍♀️

MoominKitty · 12/04/2020 20:12

I hacked 5 inches off this morning and cut in a side sweepy fringe.

I have started suffering the dreaded post-partum hair loss this week, and my hair is fine and thin anyway so thought fuck it let's get rid of the cacky ends 😂

clumsyduck · 12/04/2020 20:12

Iv been doing mine for a while as I have a straight blunt all one length cut so it’s fairly easy by putting it in low pony tails and trimming off the ends

For those wanting to try just be aware if you do the high ponytail I saw upthread you’ll get layers - well I did anyway , fine if that’s what you want but i didn’t Sad so I stick with the low pony now and it’s fine 👍

invisibleoldwoman · 12/04/2020 20:22

What clippers do you all recommend? I’ve been wanting to clipper mine for a while and now seems like a good time. How do you manage the back?

CeriseClementine · 12/04/2020 20:46

This thread has just inspired me to do mine.

I like my hair just below shoulder level and hate getting my hair cut. I grow it a bit then go once every 6-9 months go and get 3 inches lopped off. I was 8 months in when lockdown started so in desperate need.

I don’t like layers so split my hair down the middle and did a pony under my chin.

I just took 3 inches off under my chin, straight, and then did the point-the-scissors-towards-the-ends-of-your-hair-thing to make the finish a little choppy.

It looks pretty much the same as when I usually get my hair cut! I got dh to do a photo of the back to check it was OK. The shape is a little more rounded at the back rather than dead straight across but very even and a really nice finish.

I’m so impressed right now and would definitely recommend!

CeriseClementine · 12/04/2020 20:54

Also i’d second the warning about the unicorn ponytail method.

My sister did it a while back and it creates some really short layers and leaves the length at the back almost untouched unless you’re taking a lot off.

MrsPerks · 12/04/2020 21:18

Cut DS's fringe with curved nail scissors as it had got to the point that I couldn't see his eyes. He still looks like Hair Bear from the Hair Bear Bunch, but eye contact is now restored.

Mr Squiffany used the trimmer on his razor to do the nape of my neck as I developing a mullet. I checked in a mirror and he's done a better job than I did on his!

Hannah021 · 12/04/2020 22:11

I cut mine chin length twice before the lockdown... Not easy to get the back straight... Esp without a good size mirror... But great results, no one guesses its home made Grin
