Anyone had a go at cutting their own hair yet?

I’d been putting off getting mine done for ages and ages before lockdown and now I’ve just had enough of it. I pretty much always have it in a ponytail or plaits so I think I’m just going to wash it, plait enough of it to get hair bands on them get the kitchen scissors and cut so there’s about an inch below the hairband.

How bad could it be, not like I’m seeing anyone I know apart from DH who has badly shaved his own head, and my 17 month old DD whose fringe I have already made a disaster.

Has anyone already had a go? How good or bad did it turn out?

I’ve been cutting my own for 2.5 years now, using the forehead ponytail method alternated with cutting bunches, when the back needs to be shorter without shortening the very front. I need my hair up for work and have cut the very front too short a couple of times when putting some shape in around the face, but only in the sense that it escapes my ponytail. Never had a disaster. Really like not having to pay through the nose for a trim anymore.

dementedma · 12/04/2020 22:18

DS and two nephews have all succumbed to a skin head with the clippers. I’m tempted but too fat of face to carry that look off. Going to have to let someone loose on me with the scissors

Sarahlou63 · 12/04/2020 22:19

Yup, went from a blonde bob with brown and grey roots to a funky pixie cut with blonde tips. Can't wait to see my hairdressers face!! Grin

gingysmummy · 12/04/2020 22:21

I've done my fringe it's ok, the rest looks long and frizzy. But having arthritis i I find it really hard to put my hands in that position so wiil just have to leave it as it is

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 12/04/2020 22:39

Can anyone who’s ordered clippers tell me where to get some?
All i can find are ebay ones that are 3x the price (eg £150+)

DramaAlpaca · 12/04/2020 23:16

@RubaiyatOfAnyone I ordered mine from Amazon, they were about €50. They are due for delivery in a few days, hope they turn up!

BogRollBOGOF · 12/04/2020 23:34

We've all been done Grin
DH has rediscovered his neck and ears
I've done the MN ponytail (not for the first time)
DS1 has had an inch and a half off and has been left with a lovely bob.
DS2 is getting due for a second attack with the scissors. It still beats the time he cut his own fringe when he was 5 Grin

StormBaby · 12/04/2020 23:42

I've done the ponytail bathing before a few years ago, I cut off 14 inches! It came out in a fab layered shoulder length 'do. I cut my own fringe in many times.
I'm actually considering a long choppy bob and fringe but don't know how brave I'm feeling.

managedmis · 12/04/2020 23:44

I always cut my own fringe

It's OK

I don't scare people (that much)

catsandlavender · 13/04/2020 00:10

I always cut my own hair because I can’t afford the hairdresser and wouldn’t want to go to a cheapo one as I wouldn’t want to end up with lots cut off. My hair is hip length so it’s very easy to just hold it and cut it evenly Smile

MrsWolf2 · 13/04/2020 17:43

Well I’ve done it. It’s not a total disaster, but at the same time it kind of is.

I blame all of you with your success stories for encouraging me.

clumsyduck · 13/04/2020 21:38

Oh god that made me laugh 😆 which part is the disaster exactly 😣😂

lorisparkle · 14/04/2020 09:03

Oh no, I was not keen on my first attempt but with a bit of adjusting of the pony tail I managed to get it just how I like it after the third attempt

YouSetTheTone · 14/04/2020 09:42

Oh thank you MrsWolf2 I needed this thread for lots of reasons! (Light relief plus tips!) Hope your hair looks better than you think. Shaggy chic? Boho lockdown vibe?

Can someone please explain the MN high ponytail thing for Dummies?

lorisparkle · 14/04/2020 14:18

I watched a couple of YouTube videos on cutting your own hair - the ponytail method. There are lots!

TheHonestTruth100 · 14/04/2020 14:49

Anyone have links to YouTube tutorials they followed which worked out well? My hair length is starting to pee me right off

Celandines · 14/04/2020 15:21
This one
Beechview · 14/04/2020 17:54

I used this method

theconstantinoplegardener · 14/04/2020 18:17

I cut my hair using the Mumsnet method on Saturday.

DH hasn't noticed yet so it can't be too bad!

hoorayforharoldlloyd · 14/04/2020 19:15

Parrtner did the toddler. It's the worst cut i have ever seen. To the point were am i avoiding family facetime while i try to work out how to make it less awful.

TheHonestTruth100 · 14/04/2020 21:10

Is everyone using hairdressing scissors? I just took a look on Amazon and didn't realise how expensive they are! Are you all cutting with standard household scissors? Is it turning out ok?

YogaLite · 14/04/2020 22:28

I've always used sewing scissors, no problems, clearly I will never be a professional Wink

Celandines · 14/04/2020 22:49

I already had these hairdressing scissors from Amazon that cost £10.20 when i bought them a year ago

Anyone had a go at cutting their own hair yet?
HeIenaDove · 14/04/2020 23:24

No i would NOT attempt this. Seen tweets where people have started to notice that politicians hair doesnt seem to be growing.

daisypond · 15/04/2020 08:20

I always cut my own hair. It’s wavy, so easier to get away with. I have also always cut my DDs’ hair since they were toddlers, and they are now in their late teens, early 20s. I use basic hairdressing scissors from Boots, which are very cheap.
