Are the schools definitely not opening after easter?

I really hope they don't given the situation but we've received no official information from the school and as far as I can tell from the government either. They said a week or so ago they're unlikely to open but when will they say officially?

OP posts:

Nobody knows OP! It seems very unlikely that the schools will reopen, given that we're now (apparently) entering the peak of our epidemic and will be in it through Easter weekend, but it's up to the government and their advisors and they've said nothing about schools reopening, just that they will be closed 'for the foreseeable future'.

MyHipsDontLieUnfortunately · 02/04/2020 08:47

I don't think they will say officially. Schools won't be open until we're told they will.

Appuskidu · 02/04/2020 08:48

Assume they won’t unless you hear otherwise.

SachaStark · 02/04/2020 08:49

If it helps, I’m a supply teacher in secondary schools, and we have received no indication that schools will reopen yet. Most schools are planning for remote learning to continue in the new term.

Loads of people will be here to shout “September” at you in a minute, but there is no evidence of this at all. I reckon mid-June-ish at present.

Bridecilla · 02/04/2020 08:49

Nobody knows. This horror is changing daily and will continue to do so. I think us staff will be back August ish, kids back September. I'm FE, usually go back mid August after summer

confusednortherner · 02/04/2020 08:49

We are expecting still to be closed as all on a rota for key workers children after holidays.

Bluntness100 · 02/04/2020 08:50

I’d assume that’s a bit too early, as the three week mark, which is just after Easter they review the current restrictions, I think most people will assume they need to stay in place for potentially another three weeks, so will extend at that point.

MuddyPuddlesAndPrettyBubbles · 02/04/2020 08:50

I would be thrilled if the schools in England went back in mid June but the NI and Scottish schools finish in June (Scotland a little earlier) so who knows.

brownandpurple · 02/04/2020 08:50

There are no plans to open after Easter currently.

SistemaAddict · 02/04/2020 08:50

Our high school have said they've been told to be prepared to still be closed into the new academic year. If exams are cancelled then I can't see it being before September.

dedkatie · 02/04/2020 08:51

California schools are not opening back up until after summer. But we are starting online schooling next week. They go back for one day for their big test in May.

Chosennone · 02/04/2020 08:52

We have a rota for key worker children and vulnerable/ehcp until June.
Nothing official has come from DFE level as far as I know, our SLT are very organised and have a plan in place whilst we wait and see.

okiedokieme · 02/04/2020 08:53

Nobody knows, they are unlikely to open before May from what I've heard

SallyLovesCheese · 02/04/2020 08:55

Schools won't be saying anything because at this point, nobody knows. We may continue to be in lockdown after Easter Monday but the Government won't announce that until nearer the time so they have the most up-to-date information.

Judging by the way schools found out about closures at the same time as everyone else, you'll find out soonest from the Government.

MollyMossy · 02/04/2020 08:56

I don't think they will be going back before September.

Peppafrig · 02/04/2020 08:59

I think mid August they will go back after the summer holidays.

80sMum · 02/04/2020 09:00

No school will open until the government decrees that it can. The fact is that nobody, including the government, currently has a clue how long this situation is going to last.

My best guess, based on the information so far, is that we will be very lucky if schools are able to open in time for the start of the autumn term. I can't see any possibility of opening before September at the earliest.

Zacromagnons · 02/04/2020 09:04

It was first reported that they said schools would be closed for five weeks, which takes us to one week into the new term. I think they will extend that until half term.

Hairydogmummy · 02/04/2020 09:06

I'm a teacher in Wales and we've been told by the government definitely not so it can't be any different in England.

Peppafrig · 02/04/2020 09:10

Our head teacher has been told not to expect to be back till mid August that's what she is working towards .

Bluntness100 · 02/04/2020 09:17

Who told her that? Seems a bit odd.

roonilwazlibismynickname · 02/04/2020 09:19

I think exams being cancelled was more to do with not disadvantaging those students who don’t have access to ict etc at home during the school closures rather than because we definitely won’t be open by then. This is just conjecture but as a teacher that is what makes most sense to me. Private school kids and middle class state school kids would be at a massive advantage during exams if they have been learning remotely for 2 or 3 months whereas those who don’t have a laptop/iPad/phone/WiFi/heat etc would be even further behind.
Ofqual have said there will be exams in September for students who don’t like their estimated grade so I presume we will back by then at the absolute latest.
I’m assuming May half term we will be back but no evidence to support this other than optimism and hope

Peppafrig · 02/04/2020 09:20

I imagine the local authorities told her that. Seems to be what they are saying anyway not to expect school till after the summer holidays .

cinammonbuns · 02/04/2020 09:21

Don’t expect anything before September. Didn’t they say schools closures need to be at least 12 weeks to be effective.

namechangemania · 02/04/2020 09:22

I think it’s going to be a long time before the government agree that 1000 kids (there’s this many at my dc’s high school) and staff can gather in one building when we can’t currently even meet one friend for a walk.
