I really hope they don't given the situation but we've received no official information from the school and as far as I can tell from the government either. They said a week or so ago they're unlikely to open but when will they say officially?

We received an email from our school that they are not opening until September at the earliest and have set up a remote term learning with live lessons as well

handmademitlove · 02/04/2020 09:23

Schools were closed until further notice. So until you are told they are reopening, they will remain closed.

roonilwazlibismynickname · 02/04/2020 09:23

12 weeks takes us up to Whitsun bank holiday and half term. It isn’t sustainable for the economy to be shut down until sept if all schools, childcare and holiday clubs are shut then people cannot work and the economy will crash.

42isthemeaning · 02/04/2020 09:23

My school has written to parents to say we expect online learning to take place until the end of the summer term. I know of several schools across the EU which aren't opening again until September.

MangoesAreMyFavourite · 02/04/2020 09:28

Teachers at my DC's primary had told the children it would probably be September.
That wasn't the official line then but we have said the same to them so they are prepared.

They know there may be a half chance that school may reopen before but it won't be any time soon.

Peppafrig · 02/04/2020 09:28

I'm sure September would be welcome news for the all the Scottish and NI kids who would get a three week extension in their summer . I can't see that happening so I still think it will be mid August.

HoffiCoffi13 · 02/04/2020 09:29

The fact is, no one knows. The government doesn’t know. As they have said themselves, all decisions will be made at the ‘right time’ and that it is all a constantly moving target.
They will have models and plans, but until they know how well current measures are working they don’t know what further measures need to be taken.
Education authorities don’t know. Head teachers don’t know. Teachers don’t know.
Assume your children are at home until told otherwise.

pumpkinpie01 · 02/04/2020 09:30

@roonilwazlibismynickname exactly my thoughts , if children of non key workers have no childcare then the country will be in a mess. I think they will reopen June.

WotnoPasta · 02/04/2020 09:31

I’m hoping they can go back in for the last week or two. DD is off to secondary in September and would be good if she could go back for a bit. Luckily the secondary does an event in the summer hols for new students.

NotAnotherUserNumber · 02/04/2020 09:31

They will probably make an official announcement to clarify soon. The DfE is compiling guidance for remote teaching and other factors to cover the summer term. They’ll have to make an official announcement before the guidance can go live or it will be confusing.

Indeed it will! It's all very worrying. Thousands of businesses will fall by the wayside. The UK, indeed the world, will be feeling the effects of this crisis for many decades to come. The effects will likely be similar to, if not worse than, the 2nd World War, which the UK finally finished paying for in 2006, some 50 years after it ended.

80sMum · 02/04/2020 09:32

Make that 60 years!

manicinsomniac · 02/04/2020 09:32

We're just desperately hoping for at least a couple of weeks at the end of the summer term so our Year 8s can have some closure and we can all have some end of year consolidation and fun. April (And May and quite possibly June) is just not going to happen sadly.

nellodee · 02/04/2020 09:46

I think if the government thought there was any chance of schools opening before 11th May, they would not have cancelled A-levels.

roonilwazlibismynickname · 02/04/2020 09:48

nellodee see my earlier message about disadvantaged students for my view on that. also it did seem that Boris announced no exams with no guidance from Ofqual almost as an afterthought. I don’t think it was very well thought out and was a snap comment which hadn’t been fully discussed

OtherVoices · 02/04/2020 09:53

HT will have been given guidelines - nothing definite but they will have an idea.... I think the Gov are drip feeding to avoid panic - 3 week review, then another etc... If they hit everyone with the news that they will be stuck in for a further X number of months people would panic.
Our HT knew that exams were being cancelled a while before the Gov public announcement but he wasn't allowed to share the information.

BlipBlopBloop · 02/04/2020 10:10

They’ve cancelled exams. I think even September is optimistic, autumn half term or January would be my guess.
We don’t know how many people are going to die from this, including teachers. Once it’s determined safe to open the schools, decisions will need to be made as to how they are going to. Some people think different year groups will be back for different amount of days and year groups starting a few weeks away. Some people think due to coronavirus related austerity measures schools will be cut down to 3-or-so days a week, being told to arrange childcare themselves or possible means tested schemes like there is for nursery fees. We may be missing a lot of teachers, maybe we won’t, we just don’t know what is going to happen.

ilovecakeandwine · 02/04/2020 10:19

Who knows ! Those saying September and beyond don't know either it's just speculation. I can't go back to work until my dc goes back to school , I expect a lot are the same . My speculation end of April more companies will open so schools will be under pressure to let more back in . I suppose those that can wfh and are SHM will stay home longer . Schools haven't actually closed they are still open to key workers and some Sen children. I suspect the September date banded about is when they expect schools to be open full capacity.

BlipBlopBloop · 02/04/2020 10:25

Shops are definitely not going to open at the end of this month. It’s meant to peak in May/June.

Didkdt · 02/04/2020 10:57

I'm hoping that they go back in June or after May half term
I know that public health is the priority and must remain so, but I think families well being is also important.

Spikeyball · 02/04/2020 11:20

I think it is impossible before June. There will be too many staff self isolating to make it viable.
I think it is possible that they may reopen for a short while before the end of the school year but that will be depend upon covid numbers. I think they may want a second peak to happen before and not during the winter flu season and that will be a deciding factor on schools being open.

manicinsomniac · 02/04/2020 11:27

BlipBlopBloop your posts are terrifying and go far beyond anything else I've read (schools worst case Sept and peak reached by end April). Where have you got your info from? Is it an accurate source? Sad

cabbageking · 02/04/2020 11:33

There have been no guidance about opening because we don't know what will happen. Schools will open when they open. Be it September, December or next year. It depends if people continue to ignore the advice and take risks, if it can be contained, if the school has the staff for the whole school to attend at once, if they decide something new and unheard of. No one knows yet.

Bluntness100 · 02/04/2020 11:43

No it’s not it’s supposed to peak over the next week or two, May or June was the initial projection.

Peak between 6-30th April .

I'm not sure where people get the information from that lockdown will go on to September and beyond. If it's your opinion fine but it's not fact . The situation will probably go on for some time and schools will closed for some time but that does not mean lockdown for 6 months . I don't know how long nor does anyone else , I'm just reading the news same as anyone else .
