This lockdown really has brought out the power hungry little men

Give someone a high vis and an ID badge and suddenly you’ve got a mini village dictator on your hands.

I give you the parish council. Headed by a man who has taken it upon himself to “patrol” the village looking for rule breakers. He likes to talk about his patrol a lot on FB. Two day’s ago they were given ID badges by the POLICE so people would know they were from the village response team when they dropped food parcels.

He mentioned the ID badges 57372772 times (with pics) and then refused them to anyone who wasn’t “frontline village response”. His patrol involves questioning why people are out of their houses. And watching for suspicious people. And generally walking around in a high vis.

Little fucking goblin (sorry I’ve had a hard day)

We have a busy body neighbour. I quite like her, she watches the movements here like a fucking hawk, we'd never get burgled! She phoned me on my mobile one day at work to say that there were people in a transit van going in and out of my house, but she knew I was at work. Yes, they would be my friends who have a key, down for the weekend 😂

She stopped DH on Sunday to say that he'd already been out twice that day. Yes, the pager going off loudly in his hand (and the fact she knows he's a fire fighter) May mean he goes out more than once a day when he's on call!

Sn0tnose · 31/03/2020 20:15

There is a rival volunteer group in the next village

I really hope you refer to the two groups as the Sharks and the Jets.

KayakingOnDown · 31/03/2020 20:18

Certain policeforces have been in the news for overreach - setting up roadblocks, sending drones after walkers, telling shops not to sell Easter eggs - Lord Sumption was on Radio 4 basically saying power has gone to their heads and they're going far and beyond the law.

We could slide quite easily into a police state.

Flaxmeadow · 31/03/2020 20:19

Isnt this getting a bit old now?

ArtisanBreadBin · 31/03/2020 20:19

Give a man a whistle and he will blow it. Sympathies.

JKScot4 · 31/03/2020 20:19

A local lady has been making masks for essential workers; free of charge, she was appealing for more fabric and then received a msg from an ‘official group’ telling her she should be making and distributing them under their group!!
Just fuck off control freaks!

Chesneyhawkes1 · 31/03/2020 20:22

I'm disappointed we don't have one where I live.

Could do with a laugh and someone to tell to fuck off

KickAssAngel · 31/03/2020 20:26

Just call him Captain Mannering.

Haffiana · 31/03/2020 20:30

There is an army of Hunsnetters on this board who have exactly the same attitude. They just compulsively have to tell everyone their version of Teh Rulez according to their dim understanding.

It needs calling out, every time.

anotherlittlechicken · 31/03/2020 20:31

LOL @ 'little fucking goblin!' Grin

Thanks for the giggle! And YANBU, he sounds like a total wankmuffin.

anotherlittlechicken · 31/03/2020 20:32

@Haffiana HUNSNETTERS !!!!! Grin

TheEndIsBillNighy · 31/03/2020 20:33

Thank you for making me laugh out loud, OP.

Mummyoflittledragon · 31/03/2020 20:40

I used to live under the misapprehension that what happened in Germany last century could never happen here. Now I think I was almost certainly mistaken.

SansaSnark · 31/03/2020 20:40

If he is outside patrolling, I would question if he is allowed to do this- it's not within the government rules after all.

His behaviour sounds ridiculous, and I'd be tempted to report him to the police if he is not following the government rules.

I hope he is staying socially distant whilst questioning people.

Whilst it's important that we all follow the rules, I would be really resistant to something like this- it's Stazi-esque.

bookworm14 · 31/03/2020 20:45

These people would gleefully have become Stasi informers. It’s frightening to watch it happen in real time.

Shitsgettingcrazy · 31/03/2020 20:45

It usually annoy me when people say this.

But it's not men. It's people. Theres some vicious posters in here that seem to enjoy telling people they are doing lockdown, wrong even when they are following the guidelines, that seem excited at the prospect of lockdown getting tighter and generally think government guidlines dont matter, what matters are their made up version of the rules.

The 3 people who have shifted at my dad, walking to his nhs shift, have been women.

The people on my local Facebook page, that seem to know exactly why people are out and take photos of them, are a mix of women and men.

Its brought out quite a nasty side of some people who clearly just want to control others.

It’s quite interesting that those who are witnessing “rule breaking” seem to be out and about quite a lot.

Does anyone else notice this pattern 😀?

anotherlittlechicken · 31/03/2020 20:58

These cheeky little feckers (in Llandudno,) are not respecting social-distancing rules! Hmm

All over the place, not 6 feet apart, and NOT in their usual place/area of residence! Angry

Terralee · 31/03/2020 21:02

During the ww2 Nazi invasion of the (British) Channel Islands the police & the Germans were overwhelmed by post from snitchers.
Sadly these nasty tell tales actually cost people their lives, for a sad example google Louisa Gould.

So the current situation does not surprise me. I'm lucky in that I live on a road where neighbours are friendly but we all mind our own business, quite a few are foreign & or are housesharers. So we don't have any busybodies in our road.
I haven't joined any local FB groups either & none of my actual FB friends are really local so I wouldn't know or care if anyone tried to shame me on social media anyway for any reason.

Hannah021 · 31/03/2020 21:04

Let them keep the idiots in order
people are scared of dying, yet here we have ppl opposing any activity to keep virus spreaders at bay!

BrexpatInSwitzerland · 31/03/2020 21:05

Yep, the suburban Stasi have made a few appearances round here too.

Hah! I love the "suburban Stasi" and I'm stealing that!!! (Sadly I live in a city ... limited use, but still hilarious.)

This reminds me of this one person I used to work with. Short, chubby man with a bit of a Napoleon complex at the best of times. Then they made him Fire Marshal. Needless to say, our first evacuation drill thereafter was emotionally scarring for 3/4 of the poor sods in that office building. The remaining 1/4 of us were young, rebellious and computer-savvy. That's how the memes happened.

While this was all great fun, I dread to think what would happen if good old George were given an official police-issued badge during an actual crisis. Oh, wait!

[Off to google what George is up to and praying that he's not terrorising some poor hamlet somewhere as the newly appointed head honcho of the Pandemic Force ...]

BrexpatInSwitzerland · 31/03/2020 21:07

By the way, nothing wrong with the rules. They help. Power-tripping vigilantes, on the other hand, ...

sunshinewishes · 31/03/2020 21:08

Yup, we have one too.

He's even set up a live web cam broadcast of the local park so he can monitor the situation. He's made it available on YouTube so people can check in too.

Massive twat.

Lotuscup563 · 31/03/2020 21:08

How can he patrol the village? Shouldn’t he be out only once a day for exercise? Or he could be spreading it everywhere for as far as anyone knows.

So what would he do if he saw you out twice in one day without a good explanation?
