THEY HYPOCRISY REGARDING THE CORONAVIRUS

Isoskdidin88282 · 30/03/2020 19:26

AIBU to question whether almost everyone is being a hypocrite regarding the way they react to to the coronavirus in comparison to someone thing else.

Sadly, it’s normal that people die - a regular occurrence around the world - Yemen, Syria, Sikhs in Afghanistan more recently.

However, there is little to no new coverage or care about these issues, but when a virus threatens America and the western world, everyone panics.

Also (trying not to ramble on), how can we change our actions to combat the virus so quickly, but not change to reduce pollution and global warming. We’ve been harming the environment for years, but no one wants to change. Are we more important than animals?

Just my thoughts, I’m sure many of you disagree though.

OP posts:
Fatted · 30/03/2020 19:28

I agree OP. No one cares until it effects them personally.

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 30/03/2020 19:29

WHY ARE YOU SHOUTING?

BovaryX · 30/03/2020 19:30

but when a virus threatens America and the western world, everyone panics

Er, the Middle East, India, the world beyond the West is shut down because of this virus. It's a global pandemic

esjee · 30/03/2020 19:30

Global warming is still abstract to people. In their daily lives it has no impact. Plus the major work needs to be done by corporations and the government. Same with other countries. That's abstract. Of course we are more likely to care about things that directly affect us, that's human nature. There's no getting away from it.

BovaryX · 30/03/2020 19:33

Are we more important than animals?

Hmm. Given the horrific way that many animals are treated across the globe, are you pretending you don't know what the majority opinion is on that?

Guyonhere1 · 30/03/2020 19:34

No, I meant that the virus is affected the Western World, but the issues we ignore don’t

BovaryX · 30/03/2020 19:37

but not change to reduce pollution and global warming

Which countries are the top three contributors to global warming and pollution?

Batshittery · 30/03/2020 20:02

WHY ARE YOU SHOUTING?

Grin
Guyonhere1 · 30/03/2020 20:17

I wasn’t shouting

People always say we don't care about what happens in developing countries, but actually people here give a lot of money to charities in those countries.
It's human nature to care more deeply about what is directly going on with family and close by though.

Life is shit. People who think their life is shit don't really care if someone else deals with a different kind of shit

SquishySquirmy · 30/03/2020 20:31

It is not like this is just affecting the western world though is it? It will be burning it's way through refugee camps and war zones even faster than through it is through wealthy, stable countries and doing more damage there.

Absolutely true. The OP has a point about wars which are ignored, but the impact of this virus upon the casualties of those wars will be dire.

ADarkandStormyKnight · 30/03/2020 20:35

A. Most of the big problems are beyond our individual control.
B. Most of us get used to the status quo and don't really notice incremental changes.

The pandemic presents us with a direct threat which requires our immediate attention.

TildaKauskumholm · 30/03/2020 20:37

but it's global, hence the name pandemic....

Bluntness100 · 30/03/2020 20:40

but when a virus threatens America and the western world, everyone panics

Eh, it started in China, has significantly impacted Africa, the Middle East etc, it’s not just the west and America.

And whatever else is happening, and I agree much work is required, it doesn’t involve millions and millions of potential brutal deaths in a matter of weeks, and billions of people under house arrest.

Globally that is, not just in the states and The west..

lubeybooby · 30/03/2020 20:42

Other issues are very important and no one has said they aren't

But other issues don't have the potential to immediately overwhelm the nhs to the point where you have 50 people needing a ventilator and only one ventilator left. That's what this has been causing in Italy where they have more icu beds per head than us

Batshittery · 30/03/2020 20:42

Me please Daphne

Obsidian77 · 30/03/2020 20:42

I don't see why it's hypocritical

Wrinklesareenhancing · 30/03/2020 20:45

I’ve said that global warming will only matter when Florida disappears under water and 100k people die. White people of course. We know that New Orleans wasn’t enough.

TheCanterburyWhales · 30/03/2020 20:48

This is all confusing.
Are you allowed to agree with yourself under a different name then now? Is it a new concession for pandemics?
