THEY HYPOCRISY REGARDING THE CORONAVIRUS

AIBU to question whether almost everyone is being a hypocrite regarding the way they react to to the coronavirus in comparison to someone thing else.

Sadly, it’s normal that people die - a regular occurrence around the world - Yemen, Syria, Sikhs in Afghanistan more recently.

However, there is little to no new coverage or care about these issues, but when a virus threatens America and the western world, everyone panics.

Also (trying not to ramble on), how can we change our actions to combat the virus so quickly, but not change to reduce pollution and global warming. We’ve been harming the environment for years, but no one wants to change. Are we more important than animals?

Just my thoughts, I’m sure many of you disagree though.

OP posts:

Has the OP came back ( or just the sick puppet?)

BelleSausage · 30/03/2020 20:55

And I thought the hot takes on coronavirus couldn’t get any worse. Well done for plumbing the depths of human indecency OP.

Astressie · 30/03/2020 20:57

I have felt from the beginning that in a way this gives us a useful insight into how others freedom and feelings of safety are being affected everyday in for e.g. war torn countries. Also, we have been given plenty of time to reflect on this. i feel there will be things that come out of this crises that may be beneficial for humanity and howwe continue to live in this world.

TellLucyILoveHer · 30/03/2020 20:57

Obviously it's because people see the COVID threat as more immediate. Climate change will likely kill many many more, but people aren't good at changing their behaviour for the long term, unfortunately.

JonnyPocketRocket · 30/03/2020 20:59

I’ve said that global warming will only matter when Florida disappears under water and 100k people die. White people of course. We know that New Orleans wasn’t enough.

I dunno, the Maldives might do it. They're due to be under water within the next generation, so that'll be brown people AND rich white people dying. Or at least losing out on their honeymoon destinations - which surely carries almost as much weight as a couple hundred brown people dying 🙄

Bubblebu · 30/03/2020 21:00

"Are we more important than animals?"

Apparently the whole pandemic started with someone eating a bat.... (just a thought)

DaphneFanshaw · 30/03/2020 21:02

Oh gosh, I didn't know that offering... You know...wasn't allowed anymore.
Is it considered goady?

Samtsirch · 30/03/2020 21:03

Greta?

PickAChew · 30/03/2020 21:06

THEY WHAT? SPEAK UP, I CAN'T HEAR YOU, LOVE.

cloudspotter · 30/03/2020 21:08

I'm intrigued by the constant breast beating about this stuff, and I think it reflects the "white saviour" mindset.

Do you think we are unique? Do you imagine people living in far flung countries are losing sleep about what's happening in the USA or UK, rather than what is happening in their neighbourhood?

People have degrees of concern depending on severity, proximity, impact, exposure, identification, relevance etc.

No-one has the bandwidth to spend every waking moment condemning themselves for every single one of humanity's problems in the world that is neither in their control nor visibility.

I don't think it's hypocritical for people to be more concerned about something that means they are locked down in their homes than other problems that may be heartbreaking but very far away and outside their control.

izzywizzygood · 30/03/2020 21:10

I totally agree with you OP. YANBU, and you are not rambling either! Could do with some more sense like yours - so thanks for posting. :)

R2221 · 30/03/2020 21:10

“Are we more important than animals”

We THINK we are. That’s the root cause of all problems and evil on earth.

The fact however remains that we aren’t.

Guyonhere1 · 30/03/2020 21:13

Thanks. I thought I was mad for a second !

JamesBlonde1 · 30/03/2020 21:14

It is affecting us hugely, and for many people in a way they could never have imagined. I'm sorry, but if it affects us, then it is news.

Gingerkittykat · 30/03/2020 21:19

India has just gone into lockdown, I can't imagine the carnage the virus will cause there.

Yes, this virus has shown exactly how quickly systems can change if people want them to. Look at the homeless all being offered beds or universal credit being increased £20 a week.

SewItGoes · 30/03/2020 21:19

People are dying every day all over the world. Everywhere. Not just in "poor countries".

And yes, I believe people are more important than animals. (I say that knowing full well that I love and value my dogs more than most people alive today. But speaking philosophically, people do matter more than animals.)

Lynda07 · 30/03/2020 21:22

Disclaimer: I do not endorse the below but thought we ought to be aware that idiots abound, if we were not already.

Inkpaperstars · 30/03/2020 21:24

I agree that we need to learn lessons about how we respond to urgency and the need to change. I thought of the climate change comparison too. It will be hard though because studies show that people find it hard to make changes till something threatens them directly and immediately.

With regard to the other causes of death, there is a degree of hypocrisy but none of the other causes you mention are likely to show exponential growth and that is the key difference I think.

MummyPop00 · 30/03/2020 21:24

Harsh but fair OP.

If we are herd animals, it’s not a global herd

cheesemongery · 30/03/2020 21:25

This is all confusing.
Are you allowed to agree with yourself under a different name then now? Is it a new concession for pandemics?

Grin

Allowed out once a day for exercise and one name change to back yourself up on MN.

DrinkSangriaInThePark · 30/03/2020 21:25

Yes, people are definitely more important than animals. Given the choice to save a squirrel or a human person, it either be shockingly immoral to save the squirrel.

MsMeNz · 30/03/2020 21:27

Agreed however I think the world is waking up to the fact we can take more action than we ever thought possible. I heard one place gave the local government/council 48 hours to get all homeless people homed in shelters and after years of not being possible it suddenly was... Funny that. I'm hoping after this we will realise that things can be done about abstract things or seemingly impossible tasks.

DID YOU INHALE YOUR COPY OF THE GUARDIAN BY MISTAKE?

starlightgazers · 30/03/2020 21:29

We know that New Orleans wasn’t enough

New Orleans was horrific, I was so incredibly shocked at how it was dealt with - a real eye opener.

I hear what you are saying OP, and it is probably true to say that the majority only care about the things that affect them directly. But it is not fair to say that everyone only cares about themselves. Lots of global issues concern me, how this pandemic will affect developing countries, refugees, the homeless etc, I care but am limited in what I can do. OTOH, there are things I can do to try and keep me and my DC's safe from this, so naturally I am focussing on that atm. But that is not because I don't care about others, I do.
