THEY HYPOCRISY REGARDING THE CORONAVIRUS

Isoskdidin88282 · 30/03/2020 19:26

AIBU to question whether almost everyone is being a hypocrite regarding the way they react to to the coronavirus in comparison to someone thing else.

Sadly, it’s normal that people die - a regular occurrence around the world - Yemen, Syria, Sikhs in Afghanistan more recently.

However, there is little to no new coverage or care about these issues, but when a virus threatens America and the western world, everyone panics.

Also (trying not to ramble on), how can we change our actions to combat the virus so quickly, but not change to reduce pollution and global warming. We’ve been harming the environment for years, but no one wants to change. Are we more important than animals?

Just my thoughts, I’m sure many of you disagree though.

"Are we more important than animals" You know they put themselves first right? When was the last time a lion said to you "I've decided not to eat you as I am very mindful of the rights of non-lions"

No, I meant that the virus is affected the Western World, but the issues we ignore don’t

Hahaha Hahaha Hahaha Hahaha Hahaha Hahaha

Sorry, I tried to laugh quietly but that was funnier than a rattling fart in Tesco

Also this is easier to comply with as we’ve been very specifically told what to do and what not to do backed by a change in the law. Hairdressers, restaurants, libraries you must close.
Work from home if it can be done.
Exercise only once per day.
Stay 2m away from everyone.

We don’t really have a choice.

Climate change is a bit more vague.... use less carbon, use less electricity, reduce CO2 output, conserve energy.

Idontmattertoher · 30/03/2020 22:36

Perhaps I can explain to you how name changes work and why we use them? I'd love to do a bit of mansplaining for you...

BeijingBikini · 30/03/2020 22:37

China is top polluter partly because we buy ALL our plastic tat from there. It's not as simple as finger pointing "look how much they pollute!!!!". If you stopped buying so much crap they'd stop polluting so much - or would you prefer that all that crap was manufactured in England so we could pollute instead?

Also, pollution means nothing on it's own - China/India/USA are massive countries with much larger populations. Look at the statistics on pollution per capita, then we are actually quite high on that list.

Lynda07 · 30/03/2020 22:37

I don't necessarily disagree with what you mean by this thread, if I've interpreted it correctly, but can't work out the point of it.

PlanDeRaccordement · 30/03/2020 22:45

“Yes. Ebola was monstrous but I don't recall the same level of concern.“

Because you weren’t living in Africa. My point is that we only see local levels of concern and the closer an epidemic gets to our local environment, the more the level of concern. It’s human nature to prioritise local threats over distant threats and this is true of everyone everywhere. I don’t think for a second that someone in Australia is more concerned about the death rate in Italy than they are about CV within their own area. I don’t think anyone in Zimbabwe is as concerned as a Londoner is about the U.K. NHS and whether it can cope.

I don’t really view that as hypocrisy, or racism or anything negative. Media coverage is to inform people so they can take action so it needs to be local. What would be the point of say the U.K. news conveying in exquisite detail the lockdown restrictions and rules that apply to people in France or Italy? None. People have only so much time to spend taking in information so they most need information that applies to them in their location.

Coyoacan · 30/03/2020 22:48

You are attributing agency to us, the general public, but what agency do we have? Even staying at home voluntarily, depending on the country, is under the threat that if we don't, we will be faced by a situation like Spain or Italy. Very few of us epidemiologists and economists to be able to weigh up the benefits of one action or another. So, no, we are not hypocrites. We are going along with a situation that few of us understand and following advice from experts and/or obeying orders from the police.

Coyoacan · 30/03/2020 22:50

Not only that, what are individuals supposed to do about global warming? I don't fly, do not have a car and I either walk or use public transport. What else am I supposed to do?

MintyMabel · 30/03/2020 22:57

Has the OP came back ( or just the sick puppet?)

Oh shit, @StoorieHoose, has it got Covid?

PlanDeRaccordement · 30/03/2020 23:04

“China/India/USA are massive countries with much larger populations. Look at the statistics on pollution per capita,”

I agree with you on India that their per capita pollution is very low. But not with the China and USA. Their overall pollution is absolutely higher per capita. This 2019 data shows the metric tonnes per capita:
USA 16.5
China 7.5
U.K. 6.5
France 4.5

@Bubblebu
“Apparently the whole pandemic started with someone eating a bat.... (just a thought)”

Are people still spreading this?? Yes, it’s likely that this strain of Coronavirus came from bats, but the strain in bats couldn’t enter humans directly. It’s much more likely that a mammal picked up the virus from a bat, and the bat virus and a mammal virus combined and were able to enter a human, whether that’s through eating the mammal or contact with the mammal’s urine/faeces.

One of the latest Ebola outbreaks was thought to be transmitted to a child from a bat by the bat’s urine getting on the child’s toy and then onto the child’s hands/mouth.

It’s not always about people eating weird shit Hmm

blue25 · 30/03/2020 23:10

Pointless post. This pandemic is global, so you’re incorrect.

Guyonhere1 · 31/03/2020 00:03

@blue25 I was pointing out the difference in how we react to it compared to other issues smh

Bubblebu · 31/03/2020 00:20

UtterlyPerfectCartoonGiraffe

So are you saying wet markets are an acceptable thing?....

UtterlyPerfectCartoonGiraffe · 31/03/2020 00:47

bubblebu That is one heck of a leap Grin Of course not. Wet markets are foul, and need to be banned. But you didn’t even mention a wet market in your post. You mentioned a person eating a bat which has been proved to be completely unrelated to this outbreak.

If you actually bothered to read my post it also shows how wet markets spread diseases like this - infected animals near meat, different animals (alive and dead) in cramped conditions.

You don’t need to eat the bat to pick up the infection. You just need contact with the urine/faeces of an infected animal, or to eat undercooked “normal” meat that’s been infected.
