Going to the supermarket tomorrow! What shall I buy?

Very excited about a trip to the supermarket tomorrow... this is what life has become so grabbing excitement and joy where I can. I only plan to go once a week if that but does anybody have any suggestions on things to buy that are a bit extravagant/things you wouldn’t usually eat or drink? I try to eat fairly sensibly but really fancy treating myself one evening this week with a film and some treats once my DC are in bed.

Magazines? Puzzle magazines?

LizzieMacQueen · 29/03/2020 21:52

An easter egg

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/03/2020 21:53

Posh cheese and crackers

PicsInRed · 29/03/2020 21:53

Easter products are receiving little interest from our newest preppers and are even marked down. You could have your fill of those!

H1978 · 29/03/2020 21:55

A double chocolate muffin is my ‘always’ treat

Purpleorangegerberas · 29/03/2020 22:04

Ooh maybe some Easter goodies! I’ve sorted the DC (done a few weeks ago) but it would be lovely to have some Easter treats too Grin I don’t really drink alcohol so might get some fancy hot chocolate too! Also like the idea of the posh cheese and crackers!

Nice bottle of red and posh crisps

Nat6999 · 29/03/2020 22:37

All the chocolate you can eat, a pile of magazines & something nice to drink.

ProfessorPootle · 29/03/2020 22:47

I’d get Easter eggs, Chocolate milk, magazines, smoked salmon and bagels.

Unfortunately all our nearby supermarkets have a 4hr+ queue just to get inside, then you have to go down each aisle and wait for the person in front to move 2m along so another couple of hours til you can pay and escape. It’s put me right off, been going to local corner shops instead, luckily they’re well stocked with chocolate

buttermilkwaffles · 29/03/2020 22:48

Chocolate.

Yum Yums.

Croissants and good coffee for breakfast.

Selection of cheeses and food bread or savoury biscuits / thins / oatcakes.

buttermilkwaffles · 29/03/2020 22:49

Or a tub of luxury ice cream.

PurpleDaisies · 29/03/2020 22:51

Antipasti in jars.
Nice table sauces and chutneys.
Unusual spice mixes.

All will make boring meals more interesting, last for ages and not be the sort of thing people are panic buying.

IHaveBrilloHair · 29/03/2020 22:53

Yoghurts.
I really want some.
Also fresh fruit and potatoes and baked beans.

Laiste · 29/03/2020 23:07

Baked beans. My kingdom for a bloody baked bean!

Good luck though. Had none in the house when the panic hit and haven't been able to get any since. I mean i was never mad about them but suddenly i.want.beans.on.toast. soooo much.

Mumdiva99 · 29/03/2020 23:10

I went today. There was some good deals on fish and meat from the counter. Got my OH a Skate wing for a treat. Got myself some cheese and a few tapas bits. Bought the kids some hot cross buns.

itmusthavebeencoffee · 29/03/2020 23:26

CHEESE, orange juice, chocolate, Easter eggs, coffee, loads of fresh veg, fancy bread and maybe a nice bottle of something.

Purpleorangegerberas · 30/03/2020 00:47

Thank you for all the great ideas! I’ve added a fair few items to my shopping list... if I can get them!
@ProfessorPootle sorry you’ve had such trouble getting in! I last went a week ago and they weren't too bad but it might be different now.

Fieldofgreycorn · 30/03/2020 00:59

Crumpets.

Gingerkittykat · 30/03/2020 01:08

The tubes of part-baked pain au chocolat, I think they also have frozen ones you just bung in the oven.

You get the nice smell of baking, the lovely warm pastry and gooey chocolate too.

Purpleorangegerberas · 30/03/2020 10:37

The ques are long here too. So different to how it was last time I came! Looking forward to getting some goodies if there’s anything left once I get in but this will probably be my last trip for 2 weeks if I can help it!

Guys sorry to be a bear on this .. but you do realise now is not the time to be comfort eating yum yums and chocolate.
This crisis is not going to play out quickly. It is going to be months and months.
It's likely that quite a lot of us are going to get CV at some point.
The worse shape you are in the poorer the outcome. Obesity is also a risk factor as is diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

So look after yourselves. Self care, meditate if you can. Tidy up, spring clean, sort out things in your house.

Yes let's treat ourselves. To me that means fresh tropical fruit, a tiny bit of posh cheese and sourdough bread. In fact I am planning on making my own fancy sourdough bread using youtube tutorials.

Sorry if that's all a bit smug and wairose-ish
Stay well.

Now is exactly the time to be eating yum yums and chocolate as part of a balanced diet.

kaldefotter · 30/03/2020 11:47

Heck yes, with this degree of underlying fear and anxiety that everyone is feeling, this is definitely the time to do whatever brings you comfort. For a lot of people, comfort does not come in the form of a healthy salad and 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise.

Do whatever brings you a little joy, OP.

custodiandiscount · 30/03/2020 11:50

OP you are aware that you're only allowed to eat boiled kale and unbuttered organic brown bread. Anything else is frivolous and should be banned.

If you're working class, of course, please amend this to unbuttered Warburtons pan loaf and boiled cabbage.

FFS some people are so self-indulgent expecting some pleasure in their lives at this time of crisis. I might even log this with 101 as I'm so enraged.
