Going to the supermarket tomorrow! What shall I buy?

Very excited about a trip to the supermarket tomorrow... this is what life has become so grabbing excitement and joy where I can. I only plan to go once a week if that but does anybody have any suggestions on things to buy that are a bit extravagant/things you wouldn’t usually eat or drink? I try to eat fairly sensibly but really fancy treating myself one evening this week with a film and some treats once my DC are in bed.

If you like hot chocolate you could get some amaretto to add to it - makes it so lovely and nutty and delicious. One measure isn’t all that much alcohol. Smile

moita · 30/03/2020 11:54

Definitely need treats. I'm going to get myself and the kids a magazine each (normally never buy them) and get myself an Easter egg (kids already sorted)

Ninkanink · 30/03/2020 11:54

🙄 at worthiness overload.

Now is exactly the time when people should treat themselves to whatever the hell they fancy.

dottiedodah · 30/03/2020 12:10

Lots of chocolate ,some cheese and crackers, a bottle or 3 of wine ! Maybe a nice couple of mags . Yummy biscuits and some strawberries /raspberries and orange juice .

It's a proven fact that having a bit of extra weight that you can lose during 2 weeks of not eating and fever actually increases your survival chances.
Being "lean" is the equivalent of the supermarket Just In Time ordering, it works great as long as everything is ticking along perfectly - 2 weeks of disruption and you're in trouble.

And that's very true stormytreader. I've seen hefty patients come through severe illness that a lightweight person would not have survived.

fairydustandpixies · 30/03/2020 12:20

Well, I'm fat so I'll be okay then! I'm going to join in with the treat eating - although I'm down to a peanut butter kitkat and the end of a block of cheese - I do have baked beans though, woohooo!

Enjoy, OP, and all the PPs, we all have to have something to make us smile right now!

catscatscatseverywhere · 30/03/2020 12:23

I think I would go for some fancy chocolates and nice red wine. Maybe some beauty product? I know there aren’t many in the supermarket, but more expensive hair conditioner perhaps.

buttermilkwaffles · 30/03/2020 12:24

You are not going to become obese overnight because you treated yourself to some chocolate or a pack of Yum Yums! If that's not your idea of a treat, that's fine, but for others it is and if it boosts your morale a bit during a very stressful and difficult time then why not.

The OP asked for "things to buy that are a bit extravagant/things you wouldn’t usually eat or drink? I try to eat fairly sensibly but really fancy treating myself..".

That's the whole point of it being a treat, it's not something you eat regularly...

Tropical fruit and a bit of posh cheese?

Get over yourself. Why do some many people think that Covid pandemic means you can tell people what do, in all aspects of their lives?

You stick to the tropical fruit and bit of cheese.

The OP can do what she wants.

custodiandiscount · 30/03/2020 12:39

(not being sarcastic this time) I've been really down as I live on my own and haven't spoken to anyone face to face for days.

On Friday I bought nice cheese, posh crackers and juice that I'd not normally buy for lunch, it gives me something to look forward to and was totally worth it. Same for dinner - I'm making much more of an effort to have something nice. We're in it for the long haul so ignore those who seem to regard this as an exercise in competitive, self-imposed misery. That's not going to help anyone's health, physical or mental.

Ninkanink · 30/03/2020 12:40

Mind you I do fancy some cheese. We’ve only got cheddar left, and plastic cheese for burgers...

I was thinking just yesterday that I’d love a baked Camembert with accompaniments.

This pandemic really pulls out dark side of some people. Geez, relax Confused

Thanks for the work you’re doing @Kateplaysrugbyinmydreams Flowers

ZeldaPrincessOfHyrule · 30/03/2020 13:08

Thanks for that, crispycracker. If I want yum yums and pain au chocolat, I'll bloody well have them. If to you, treats are tropical fruit and fresh air then that's nice. To me, snuggling up on the sofa with my children and bringing a little bit of joy to our monotonous lives with some tasty snacks as part of our balanced diet is a treat. But thanks for making it sound like that choice could be the thing that lands us all in trouble when we get CV. How guilty do you want people to feel? Enjoy your mangoes. Let others deal with this however they can, whether that's with a thimble full of posh cheese or a bucketload of coco pops.

Ninkanink · 30/03/2020 13:09

I’m going to have a champagne breakfast tomorrow! Just because I can.

Standrewsschool · 30/03/2020 13:13

Popcorn, and not the skinny sort either.

Ninkanink · 30/03/2020 13:16

Actually, brunch, because my DH has taken the day off (from working at home). We will have a lie-in, a coffee and amaretti to start the day, then a brisk walk. And after that, something nice and decadent to eat with a glass or two of bubbly.

Self care comes in many guises. For me, guilt plays no part at all - I’m alive once, and who knows how long for. I’m going to bloody well enjoy it, every single day, in whatever way is best for that day.

Deux · 30/03/2020 13:18

You must go home right away. Kneel on some sharp stones and stay there till June.

coachman · 30/03/2020 13:22

Daily wine and chocolate is what's keeping me going!

Ellie56 · 30/03/2020 13:25

@Laiste Have you tried Farm Foods? They had loads the other day when I went in.

Shitsgettingcrazy · 30/03/2020 13:26

Yes I am the one that needs to relax.

Not the person trying to impose their food choices on someone else and adding a moral obligation to it.

Ok then!

She wrote ONE post, are you really going to moan about it on and on? Seems like you should really relax.

Purpleorangegerberas · 30/03/2020 13:33

@crispycracker I understand what you’re saying Smile
I eat a good diet generally, previously struggled with an eating disorder so I try to eat a good all round diet now and like to include treats occasionally without feeling guilty as I spent a long time depriving myself and now I’m free of that after therapy and allot of work on myself.
Supermarket was very well stocked when I got in after around an hour queuing! Crazy times!
I bought lots of healthy fruit, veg, fish, pulses and other delicious goodies for making fresh meals with my children (teaching them to cook with me allot at the moment) but I did also treat my dc and me to some delicious cheeses, chocolates, chocolate milk and squirty cream, fresh orange, crumpets and ingredients to make breakfast pastries at the weekend Grin
I also bought a couple of good quality pizzas to put in the freezer for a movie night one evening.
Our supermarket had ALLOT of yellow sticker items down to evening prices too so saved allot of money on the shop which was amazing! Packs of multiple fresh fish fillets for 60p, the pizzas I got were down from £4 each to 75p! strawberries for 24p, grapes for 25p, multipacks of peppers for 15p, carrots for 11p I could go on! There was plenty for all too!
