The people ignoring the "Stay At Home" instruction are not the sort of people who are going to think "oh how lovely, BoJo has written to me personally, what a nice man, I will do what he asks"

Bloody hell, what sort of person needs a letter from Boris to finally convince them to follow the rules?

They should create a "this envelope was not locked by Boris" stamp for the occasion

I am glad he is doing it. I am supporting my 89 year old diabetic mother and her neighbour with shopping. It has finally got through to her that she must stay in but she doesn't realize how careful those of us out there have to be. She still thinks she can ask me to get her quiches ext at M and S and her bread ext at Morrisons whereas I want to get her shopping with mine once a week. I am 68 with underlying health problems so I don't want to risk myself more than necessary. Today she wondered if I would 'pop' down to our corner shop just for the newspaper she likes with the weeks tv viewing in it...even though she gets an evening paper delivered every day with the day's viewing in it. It is so much more convenient to plan her viewing in advance you see . I said no it wasn't essential shopping. I didn't want to risk myself in a shop being breathed on just for one item which in any event would be in non compliance of the rules. But I felt mean because in general times she is very independent and if she had asked me something like this I would have done it willingly.

I realize it's a bit of an expense to do it for every household but desperate times require desperate measures as we've seen with all the ways they are trying to defeat this virus. I'm sure I'm not the only one struggling to explain why we can't get a couple of items every day to our old people. Maybe sending the letter to the over 70s and emailing the rest of us would have been cheaper though.

I think it’s a good idea. That way, no one can say they didn’t know/understand. They don’t read the papers/watch the news. They didn’t know what is real or not on social media. They didn’t know if the text was a hoax.

It will probably cost a lot of money, but maybe it will make a couple of people stop and think. If it does that, it may be worth the money? 🤷‍♀️

I do wonder if this might strike a chord with the older people who maybe wouldn’t have got the text message.

I will be impressed if I get the letter as still waiting for post from 10 days ago.

I agree also, my Mum is 70 and thoroughly convinced the media is blowing it out of all proportion and have a lot to answer to. She refuses to watch the news at all and I had to be really quite firm with her this week after I'd found she'd been out doing unnecessary shops to Aldi, there's bountiful food in the house!

I was very busy with a family crisis and didn't watch the news, hadn't been on social media. Someone told me she was "Social distancing " and I didn't understand what she was talking about.
I have been waiting for something "official" to come through the door. But nothing.
Waffley Press Briefings on BBC 1 just haven't done the job, and there are still people who don't have mobile phones. Or who don't really know how to use them.

Think of the post staff having to sort and deliver. Putting them at risk. We watch the news we should understand what we need to do
