Oh, and why can't we buy them directly? Because the stock will be going to those countries and blocs with large purchasing power. We'll be in competition with the EU for supplies instead of benefiting from inclusion.

From a junior doctor in a London Hospital. Name removed for reasons of privacy.

I had never cried at work before this week. I have now broken that multiple times. What is happening is terrifying.

Senior doctors, who are usually the ones providing calmness, look terrified. The numbers we are seeing, the young ages we are seeing and the speeds that they deteriorate are terrifying. This is killing people in their 40s, 50s, 60s.

A patient, who was not on oxygen and smiled as I talked to them about the weather yesterday, is now dead.

Relatives can’t come and visit due to infection risk. So patients are dying completely alone and scared.

Government ministers have said repeatedly that the NHS is prepared for this. That is a sick joke. This government has continually ravaged the NHS so that it can barely drag itself through winter.

• There is a complete lack of appropriate protective equipment in many hospitals including my own.

• People are using protective glasses from DIY shops or donated from local schools.

• We have HALF the number of ICU beds per capita as Italy. Italy currently has greater than 10% mortality in affected cases. That is NOT a good sign for us.

• We are already having to ration ventilators and high flow oxygen devices and are basically having to pick who has the best chance of living when thinking of this equipment.

• Lots of people who needed it have not been able to have life saving equipment because we simply don’t have enough. This means they will likely die.

It is also terrifying that this is predicted to be only the very start. The peak is estimated for 2-3 weeks time.

We already have huge staff shortages because people are dropping like flies. Some of these staff may well never come back.

Other staff are working every day they can to plug the gaps. Some have collapsed at work due to exhaustion. What happens when these staff also get sick?

And what makes me so ANGRY is that all of this was preventable.

• A report back in 2012 highlighted inadequate ICU beds and specialist equipment in the NHS and OUR GOVERNMENT DID NOTHING

• Another report in 2017 said we did not have adequate protective equipment in case of a flu pandemic but the GOVERNMENT DECIDED IT WAS TOO EXPENSIVE TO BUY IT

• In January, when the cases were spreading in China we had warning, we could see this would be an absolute disaster and THE GOVERNMENT DID NOTHING. No preparation, no purchasing of equipment.

• When it arrived in Italy, and people were dying in droves, THE GOVERNMENT DID NOTHING

• Eventually, after we had almost 1000 cases, our moronic PM mumbled some vague suggestions on national TV shortly after saying that he would still be seeing his mother on Mother’s Day and after his 79 year old father appeared on This Morning telling everyone they should still go to the pub if needed.

This isn’t funny it should be CRIMINAL. This complete pigheaded “Britishness” and the “keep calm and carry on” attitude has directly led to deaths and will lead to countless more.

I don’t blame the public at all for not listening at first after the media and the politicians downplayed the situation for nearly 2 months.

OUR GOVERNMENT HAS COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY FAILED US DID NOTHING and they were always going to. They made their allegiances very clear early on during this pandemic: that the economy is more important than lives. Lives are clearly cheap and the Tories are now showing us how little they value each and every one of ours.

For god's sake! Can we take this seriously?? Because it is!!!!

Reginabambina · 28/03/2020 20:08

I’m more surprised at the 93% figure. Surely 93% of people didn’t support imposing lockdown when they did?

endofthelinefinally · 28/03/2020 20:11

@Biber
Thank you for everything you do.
I am so sorry.
I have friends and family on the front line in the NHS and they all say the same thing. It is criminal.

Mamalicious16 · 28/03/2020 20:38

I've only been out of my house for an hourly walk for 3 weeks and it pees me off that my neighbours ( non keyworkers ) are just going about their business as normal and people can't bloody social distance

There is production of ventilators happening in this country right now.

Mamalicious16 · 28/03/2020 20:50

Beer- but why are they only being PRODUCED now. We KNEW what happened with China then Italy but we ( the UK) WAITED until people are dying before we even bloody put in an order???? WTAF?

Obviously I don’t know why...the government approached the companies and they all got together and put together a plan. I know a couple of people who’re working for GKN aerospace in Luton and they are staying in hotels and isolating from families and working all hours to get it done.
I suppose while we should ask why so long, I think an important message right now is that lots of people and companies are putting other people and moral duty before profit and self interest.
It’s also important for everyone to know that we will have hundreds more ventilators becoming available as we hit the peak.
It may help with people’s stress levels and be a small reassurance in some way.

endofthelinefinally · 28/03/2020 21:19

But patients, and doctors, have already died.
We knew this was coming back in January.

Just from a logic POV, it makes sense to me that it’s better to produce ourselves rather than being in a list with other countries waiting to see who gets dished out what? Who decides what country gets what?
I mean, the EU clearly haven’t got enough as it is, without adding is into the mix as well.
when we look at the horrendous situation in Spain and Italy. And it’s only going to get worse.

(Although, tbf, it probably would have been a good idea to have done both)

I think, that the NHS and the families of the people who died might have to disagree with you on that one

More info on ventilators...

Bluntness100 · 29/03/2020 09:23

This is bullshit, I can categorically assure you. My husband works for a major company being asked to build them. And it’s not Boris who sits and talks to the companies and it’s not done via email when th government makes orders or goes into discussion, the idea is beyond laughable, I can’t believe people are falling for it. There are massive discussions going on.

It’s fake news op, 😂

Beerincomechampagnetastes · 29/03/2020 09:27

Thank you bluntness

I see we have something in common...

I’ve been trying to post facts as I’m very worried about how much fear this misinformation creates! People have terrible health anxiety atm and it’s irresponsible to post gossip as facts.

There are 8000 more ventilators being supplied over the next couple of weeks and thousands currently in production up and down the country.

For context we currently have 8000 so we will be doubling straight away- that will be able to help 20000 per week.

Things are being done!!

Marieo · 29/03/2020 09:45

I hope you aren't applying logic and reason to this thread @Bluntness100, how can we get outraged at that? Pretty much like the consultancy company who wanted to act as the middleman for some out of spec ventilators, who were dissapointed and outraged that the government didn't jump at the chance without any due diligence on the actual supplier.

Mamalicious16 · 29/03/2020 10:17

Thank you. I still don't understand why people who claim to work in the medical profession say sometimes they have to pick and choose who to put in a ventilator because they dont have enough.

He wanted to go with a big Tory donor, Brexit 'Do or Die' has never been so true.

And I bet you will struggle to find a Tory/Leave voter who doesn't agree with him.

Marieo · 29/03/2020 10:26

Sadly that will become more and more true over the coming weeks, but it still doesn't mean that the government buying ones which might not even be genuine would help; or that an EU deal would be any better. Economies of scale only really applies when there is enough supply for the demand, because there is more demand than supply, it is more sensible to try and source what you can, but also manufacture what you can. As part of a bigger deal you would likely have clauses meaning that anything you produce needs to be shared- so you're likely looking at similar numbers in similar timeframes, just through a different and more secure route. It isn't bojo making these decisions alone, it's people who do this day in day out who understand the supply chain.

Beerincomechampagnetastes · 29/03/2020 10:26

They don’t have enough mama, they’ve never had a situation where they needed so many at once.
They are coming though, I know deliveries will start next week all week from various companies. While factories have produced 30 per week before everything has upgraded now. The company I know of will be producing 800 per week from next week - it has taken weeks to prepare the line because they don’t usually make ventilators... but expectations are that they will ramp up very quickly to approx 2000 per week and this is just one company... there are many more doing the same.

Beerincomechampagnetastes · 29/03/2020 10:30

It has been a huge logistical operation to get companies in a position to proceed-

This coupled with social distancing and everything else done to flatten the curve has been to delay peak illness until the NHS has taken delivery.

Beerincomechampagnetastes · 29/03/2020 10:31

These are the best engineering companies we have in this country.

Iknewyouwerewaitingforme · 29/03/2020 10:35

Haffiana how is this at all constructive? You sound like a broken record. When stress and anxiety is already at its peak for the majority- increasing this further by those desperate to cast scorn on Boris by finding anything to blame him with, point fingers at, have regrets over is just so pointless.

The whole world was unprepared for a pandemic of this nature on this scale!! Not just Boris. As it stands our figures both in cases caught and death rates are pretty stable. Lets focus on being constructive, positive, looking forwards- not backwards. There is no time for in depth post- analysis on what we could have done right now- all energy and time needs to focused on the present and what we are doing now and what else can be done.
