I would be extremely surprised if there wasn't a clause about distributing machines made here somewhat equally.

There wasn't.

Marieo · 29/03/2020 17:01

Have you seen it @ProfessorSlocombe? Do you have a link? If not and you have been privvy to it in a work capacity, should you be posting about it on here?

Assertions not rebuttals need support. You asserted, so absent support the rebuttal stands.

EU procurement policy is available via the commission, and save for the obvious commercially sensitive elements is public. It is not and never been EU policy to direct how member states organise their internal production facilities for medical (or indeed any other) equipment.

Anyway, it's all moot, since the UK government never got as far as seeing the proposal in the first place. No matter what it said.

PicturesOfCats · 29/03/2020 17:13

Well, if there was no such clause, then it seems criminally negligent of them to make such an offer in that case, because they don’t have enough for themselves. Italians are being airlifted to Germany because there isn’t enough.
It’s not logical?!?

Looks like there's been some fact collisions somewhere here ...

PicturesOfCats · 29/03/2020 17:21

My main point is it isn’t logical to offer them elsewhere when they’re own people are drying in the tens of thousands.
Why would they do that?

PicturesOfCats · 29/03/2020 17:22

*their own people, before the grammar police come for me

Titchy

This isn’t about money, all involved are giving up production capacity from current products to do this. It really is about the country’s need, not profit. A great example of this is that Smiths have put their patented design out to the consortium for manufacture without any restrictions.

The collaboration that I referred to is the consortium (Airbus, Rolls Royce, GKN Aerospace, McLaren and others) and their output, plus the existing suppliers increase in output, should be able to meet our requirements and I expect that the bottleneck will in fact be trained nurses and doctors rather than ventilators in the end.

The Dyson and GTech activities are separate and will be great if they come to fruition but do not detract from the other efforts and so in my view are much appreciated.

and a not so great example is here :

www.medicaldevice-network.com/news/3d-printed-valves-covid-19-italy/

Italian 3D printing start-up Isinnova has saved the lives of ten Covid-19 patients after developing a replacement ventilator valve when supplies at Chiari hospital in Brescia ran dry.

if anybody is wondering where their life went wrong, notice that the part in question could be manufactured for under $1, but was being sold at $11,000 retail.

titchy · 29/03/2020 17:41

Yeah I agree Smiths and the Aerospace consortium seem to be acting in the best interests of the country. It's Dyson and Gtech I'm struggling to understand. If they were being altruistic they'd be using Smiths existing approved design not developing their own untested and currently unapproved one.

SerendipityJane · 29/03/2020 17:46

It's Dyson and Gtech I'm struggling to understand.

Depends how you view it. As a potential solution to the UKs ventilator situation (however caused) obviously as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike.

As a means of getting Dysons name and face all over the papers to give (some) people the impression he's some sort of one-man virus vanquisher ... perfect sense. I suspect GTechs PR department thought the same.

When this is said and done, we'll be hearing how Mike Ashleigh was personally delivering food parcels 25 hours a day (as he expects his staff to work), and Richard Branson was offering to fly in supplies for pensioners (with his bailout ...)

Interesting article on BBC News:

Beerincomechampagnetastes · 29/03/2020 17:57

I am slightly suspicious of Dyson tbh ...

www.itv.com/news/2020-03-26/the-ventilators-the-nhs-needs-going-into-mass-production-and-dyson-isn-t-involved/

The consortium and Dyson (separately) have been in secret talks for weeks, the government wanted certainties before announcing anything for obvious reasons. Apparently Dyson didn’t know who let the cat out of the bag —or threw it out in order to take credit and get free publicity—

Beerincomechampagnetastes · 29/03/2020 17:57

Strike through fail Blush

rwalker · 30/03/2020 18:49

Also how come they had all these ventilators waiting got no response sold them else where then went to the press.
Wouldn't you of thought they would have gone to press sooner if they were that concerned doesn't ring true .
