Tips for getting hold of chopped tomatoes!

littlemixarerubbish · 27/03/2020 22:49

Thanks to DH loving a bulk-buy from Costco pre - CV, we've still got enough for the next three weeks. But I haven't seen a single tin in the supermarket since the craziness began. I can't get a home delivery slot. We rely so heavily on tins of chopped toms for meals.

Any bright ideas for what to do once we've run out?!

I found some in a local Kwiksave. Try the less well used shops - everyone goes to the big supermarkets over the smaller places like Coop etc.

ShanghaiDiva · 27/03/2020 22:54

I saw some today in M&S. I think most things are starting to reappear. Even saw a couple of lonely packets of pasta today.

Spandang · 27/03/2020 22:55

I saw some yesterday in Sainsbury’s. The actual tin aisle was gone in it’s entirety but there are a lot on the end aisles where they put the special offers usually that people just walk past

donquixotedelamancha · 27/03/2020 22:55

We've taken to going to less frequently used places like B and M and Lidl. We've been holding off, so had to do a big shop and no issues getting anything except flour and the inconvenience of going to 3 shops.

Not so bad when the main supermarkets nearby have long queues outside even at quietish times.

Plenty in Aldi this morning, limited to 4 cans per customer I think.

Pineappletree33 · 27/03/2020 22:57

Our ALDI on Monday had pallets of the things. I was impressed with how well stocked the store was actually. I think things are started to settle down food/shopping wise.

morriseysquif · 27/03/2020 22:57

I haven't seen baked beans for weeks! I agree, I think small shops might be the place to find them.

Ribenaberriesgowoo82 · 27/03/2020 23:09

Catering companies online do the massive 2.5kg tins in singles or in cases of 4 or it maybe 6 actually. Good for batch cooking and freezing.

CherryValance · 27/03/2020 23:13

Try looking for plum tomatoes - sometimes those are available when chopped are out of stock

Autumnwindinthewillows · 27/03/2020 23:13

Home bargains had some today

Ihatesundays · 27/03/2020 23:15

My local heron had baked beans and a few cartons of tomatoes.
I need pasta soon, please come back!

Longdistance · 27/03/2020 23:17

Our Lidl has them.

HauntedHats · 27/03/2020 23:17

Farm foods had some earlier in the week and also a local store.

JuniLoolaPalooza · 27/03/2020 23:19

Why is there no flour?! I mainly wanted it for papier mache and will now feel bad if I do get some.

Hugglespuffed · 27/03/2020 23:20

Aldi had a full stock of them today. I think finally those people who stupidly overbought a few weeks ago are now ploughing through their years supply of food meaning people like me who can't afford to stockpile are finally able to do a normal weekly shop.

myidentitymycrisis · 27/03/2020 23:28

Lots of fresh tomatoes in too if you can’t get tinned

inwood · 27/03/2020 23:30

Canned plum tomatoes seem to be out of favour just get them and squash them
Down. If you've got three weeks worth I really wouldn't be worried about it now.

inwood · 27/03/2020 23:31

How many weeks worth did you buy in the first place? That's the mentality that got us in this mess.

Esspee · 27/03/2020 23:32

My Lidl had tinned tomatoes, pasta, rice, most things actually.

susiegrapevine · 27/03/2020 23:33

Dh and I couldn't get any so we bought some toms and cooked them down into a sauce to portion up and freeze. We are rapidly running out of all food. My dad got us some milk and cat food today. I am offically out of self isolation Monday so am gonna try and do a big shop and hope I can get food that I normally buy or else be creative. Am really hoping for flour. We are almost out of every kind and sugar I normally always have baking stuff in but it's all slowly been used.

Lordfrontpaw · 27/03/2020 23:35

Try some local corner stores. We have a lot of ME shops and they have all sorts of tinned and fresh food.

Wilmalovescake · 27/03/2020 23:35

You’ve still got THREE WEEKS’ WORTH IN.

Please start thinking about this in two weeks time.

AndwhenyougetthereFoffsomemore · 27/03/2020 23:36

FFS, you have enough tomatoes for three weeks.

We're in self isolation and working through our two week stock - I've allowed us one tin of toms per week as I know everyone wants them. Just leave the tomatoes for now, and think about those who can't stockpile 3 weeks worth...

RB68 · 27/03/2020 23:37

Lots of pasata and cartons today in smallr sainsburies - it won't take long to filter through but remember most of them come from Italy....

Perhaps some seeds...

Dollywilde · 27/03/2020 23:37

To be fair @inwood, she did get them from Costco, it’s designed for bulk purchases. Buying two months’ supply in one go from Tesco, that’s shit behaviour.
