Tips for getting hold of chopped tomatoes!

littlemixarerubbish · 27/03/2020 22:49

Thanks to DH loving a bulk-buy from Costco pre - CV, we've still got enough for the next three weeks. But I haven't seen a single tin in the supermarket since the craziness began. I can't get a home delivery slot. We rely so heavily on tins of chopped toms for meals.

Any bright ideas for what to do once we've run out?!

I was going to say costco.....

gamerchick · 27/03/2020 23:40

Dunno, I buy them in cases from farmfoods usually, £5 a case. I havent been up there since all this started though so no idea what it's like.

Dixiechickonhols · 27/03/2020 23:40

Food wholesale place near us is now selling to public. Usually supplies pubs and restaurants. Catering size tins but ok if you use a lot. Will be similar places across country.

GiGi18 · 27/03/2020 23:45

A saw some in coop and tried to get them plus one tin of kidney beans (chilli) but they made me choose between them! I went for the kidney beans and have regretted it ever since 😂 I hadn't heard places only letting you buy one tin of anything...

Littleshortcake · 27/03/2020 23:46

How many do you go through if you have three weeks worth ? Genuinely interested.. What do you cook? We use a tin once a week for spag bol or chilli but if I can't get any I will use fresh.

ComeAlive · 27/03/2020 23:47

Buy some tomatoes
Put them in a pan with a little water
Gently simmer until skins come off
Cut up
Hey presto, chopped tomatoes.
Simples 😉

MyDcAreMarvel · 27/03/2020 23:48

@Titsywoo I found some in a local Kwiksave were you transported back to 1998?

gamerchick · 27/03/2020 23:50

I batch cook and can use from 4 - 9 tins in one curry depending on how much I'm making. It's usually 4 tins for each tomato based dish though. Big pans worth and plenty left for the freezer.

Lynda07 · 28/03/2020 00:08

Do you have to have tinned chopped tomatoes? Plum peeled whole tomatoes are just as good and you can chop them in the pan when cooking.

ADreamOfGood · 28/03/2020 00:16

@MyDcAreMarvel hey- I was going to say that! Grin

RaininSummer · 28/03/2020 00:20

My tescos had them today but you can only have 3 cans.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 28/03/2020 00:20

One of the local cafes here has set up as a shop, delivering things like brownies, but also tins, flour, olive oil and so on.

little we are a couple, no children, and this week used three. On Sunday I made chilli, which I portioned off for the freezer, and was part of some batch cooking that I do as standard. On Tuesday I made a chorizo and red pepper pasta thing. On Wednesday I made a vegetable curry, which we had that night with rice and pitta breads, then on Thursday in jacket potatoes.

Next week we will probably have a spaghetti bolognese, but that will come from a previously frozen batch, so no tins will he sacrificed!

Both of us are at home just now, so we are probably doing more proper cooking. On normal work days we often have things like stuffed pasta, shop bought quiche/pies, stir-fry and so on, then cook at weekends.

PersonaNonGarter · 28/03/2020 00:24

OP, your behaviour is not ok.

You have three weeks worth. Please stop and think about everyone else.

HauntedHats · 28/03/2020 00:36

Hang on...you've got 3 weeks worth left...

littlemixarerubbish · 28/03/2020 00:52

At people complaining that I've been stockpiling(( DH hoes to Costco once every couple of months and bulk buys as that what you do in Costco. The last trip was well before CV kicked in. So we buy tinned toms every couple of months, saving Sainsbury's stock for everyone else 😊 we've also got quite a lot of music left over, sorry.

We have chilli and pasta every week. So for four of us that would be 6 tins. Surely that's normal??

Pasta,not music!

Mind boggling isnt it.

I have stayed in for days at a time recently and like a fool, I went in a supermarket today. A really horrible experience and one I hope not to repeat anytime soon

ineedaholidaynow · 28/03/2020 01:11

How many tins do you use in each dish? I only use one for something like chilli or bolognaise and that meal will feed a family of 3 twice.

safariboot · 28/03/2020 01:14

Tesco near me had some at about 12:30 today. And fresh tomatoes too.

Leflic · 28/03/2020 01:16

Jamie Oliver says buy tinned plum tomatoes and chop them up yourself. Apparently because the whole ones are better quality than the bits in chopped up ones.

DeRigueurMortis · 28/03/2020 01:19

Can you get hold of tomato purée?

It's just concentrated sieved tomato.

I deliberately had a lot in my Brexit box (because it's compact).

Just dilute it with water and it's the same as the cartons of passata.

IDoNotHaveABlackCat · 28/03/2020 01:41

Buy fresh tomatoes. Apply heat.

Nat6999 · 28/03/2020 02:27

Could you get the packs of 4 cans? Or Amazon have lots of different brands or catering tins

steff13 · 28/03/2020 02:50

I was going to say costco.....

Same. I got diced tomatoes and tomato paste at Costco today.

Lordfrontpaw · 28/03/2020 08:40

Leflic - I thought that too but a dietitian I saw years ago said to always buy chopped and not whole. I wish I’d asked why!
