Tips for getting hold of chopped tomatoes!

littlemixarerubbish · 27/03/2020 22:49

Thanks to DH loving a bulk-buy from Costco pre - CV, we've still got enough for the next three weeks. But I haven't seen a single tin in the supermarket since the craziness began. I can't get a home delivery slot. We rely so heavily on tins of chopped toms for meals.

Any bright ideas for what to do once we've run out?!

Waitrose had them the other day

We have chilli and pasta every week. So for four of us that would be 6 tins. Surely that's normal??
There is no normal now. We can’t get pasta or rice for chilli, or tinned tomatoes. So we can’t have it every week. We haven’t had either for a couple of weeks. The idea of having pasta or chilli as normal everyday food has changed.

Loads in our local waitrose yesterday.

FIFIBEBE · 28/03/2020 08:59

I've bought them from M&S twice in the past week.

But you don't need any Confused

Is all very well saying you bulk buy at Costco and haven't contributed towards the empty shelves, but actually, right now you are asking how to do just that.

Here's my ideas..

  1. Think about it when you need them
  1. If you can't get them - make something different

Go to a mini-supermarket. I've just been to Sainsbury's for the early opening NHS shop. No flour, no tins, no pasta/rice, no chopped tomatoes.

Stopped off in the local mini-Tesco on the way home - had all of the above and completely deserted. Walked straight in when the queue for Sainsbury's was 100+ and more.

My local newsagents has been well stocked up on tinned stuff and -gasp- toilet roll

Google recipes for something different, pasta in a white sauce, just olive oil and garlic, gorgeous recipe that is basically stock and anchovies i can share.

Get peanut butter and make satay (spaghetti is basically noodles)

Make a minestrone style soup and bulk with pasta or rice or barley.

You could stretch to six weeks if you replace some recipes now. And it's harder to get tomatoes because of Italy, it's a good idea to change your eating habits now.

I have a four pack lurking as I never use them - probably bought a year ago for one reason or other! I am running low on pasta sauce but my kids probably think I need to move on to another section of my meal repertoire.

They had plenty in Lidl yesterday. They have a limit of 6 tins of any kind.

Lordfrontpaw · 28/03/2020 09:57

I’ve been using fresh tomatoes which isn’t always brilliant but tough.

I absolutely love tomatoes and only have a few cherry ones left in the bottom of the fridge. There seems to be a shortage round here at the moment. Plenty of tins which I also love but used for different things. Such is life at the moment, shouldn't complain.

I got all those things at my local sainsburys yesterday.

penisbeakers · 30/03/2020 06:17

Are you for fucking real? There are people who have little to no food and you're asking about something you've got three weeks worth of?

You need a bloody reality check.

bumblingbovine49 · 30/03/2020 06:46

Try a.local wholesaler who normally sells to restaurants . They have lots and lots of large packets and tins of.food but also do some smaller sizes. They are desperate to sell stuff at the moment so you won't be taking supplies that are scarce ( yet), just leaving supermarket stuff for people who don't have that option
You will.need a car though to .pick up.
