May be ridiculous but my theory

Is that mother nature is teaching us all a valuable lesson here.

After years of abusing our earth, our environment, the way we have become consumer mad, children playing on gadgets rather than socializing with friends, how we could be sitting next to loved ones whilst continuously on our phones etc. Its almost like some greater being is saying " here you go, this is what you wanted, now you can only use technology to contact loved ones, no socialising, no physical contact, no consumerism, no waste, play xbox and watch Netflix until your hearts content..."

And now that freedom has been taken from us, we crave the simple things so badly. It's like we are resetting our lives and thought processes.

For what it's worth I'm neither religious or a conspirasit. But I cant help but wonder now.

I know lives are being lost and I dont wish to down play that. But I hope I'm making sense here. It feels like its happening for a greater reason.

The actually identified the first few patients who went down with it. There was no connection to the seafood market.

Carry on with your racism

cushioncovers · 24/03/2020 07:54

I get what you're saying op. We reap what we sow. 🤷🏻‍♀️. Viruses dont care who contributed towards the situation. There are far too many of us. We are for the most part too greedy and disrespectful towards the planet. This I hope will teach us all to refocus on what's actually important but I'm not holding my breath on that one.

HowIrresponsible · 24/03/2020 08:01

It sounds similar to how people thought the black death in the middle ages was witchcraft or divine intervention.

The Jews suffered from it less because of their ritual washing and others thought that there was a divine reason they didn't get it and expelled them from so many places. They just bothered to wash their hands.

I would have thought humans had stopped thinking there was any reason for this.

CatBatCat · 24/03/2020 08:26

You're not the first to think of it. Its called Gaia Theory.

lubeybooby · 24/03/2020 08:31

These things just happen from time to time, usually with dodgy food practices involved (eg eating bats)

It's not mother nature teaching us a lesson, but I do hope people come out of this with more respect for nature and climate change having seen the positive effects on wildlife and pollution

nellodee · 24/03/2020 08:35

It may not be mother nature purposefully teaching us a lesson, but it should teach us all a lesson anyway.

There is something coming. Scientists know it is coming and have been warning us, and warning us, and warning us. Whilst it is a long way off, we cannot see the full effect it will have and it doesn't feel real, but if we wait until we can see the full effect to react to it, it will be too late.

The corona virus is just a practice run for climate change.

Saucery · 24/03/2020 08:40

We’re equipped with a brain that can research and react to things we are constantly discovering about how everything on our planet is balanced and interlinked. If we ignore what our scientists tell us this is what happens.

Littlemeadow123 · 24/03/2020 08:43

@Howlrresponsible Not racism, I didnt mention Chinese people at all in my comment. I studied wildlife conservation at uni with a chinese girl so I know that they are not all animal abusers. And she told me that the meat markets/lack of animal welfare practices over there has been a ticking time bomb for years. Coronavirus was caused by a jump from animals to humans and the conditions in meat markets, restaurants, butchers etc are appalling and need to be changed. The sheer amount of wildlife species that are butchered and consumed, including some of the world's most endangered species is huge. It's not the first virus of it's type to emerge from China, which is a clear sign that essential health and safety regulations are not being followed. And the government in China would say anything to allow the meat markets to continue. The corrupt chinese government, not the people of china at large, before you accuse me of being racist again. We are talking about a government that tells people that elephant tusks just fall out to try to justify the ivory trade. We are talking about a government who tried to blame dogs and cats for the virus, leading to loads of them being murdered in rather horrific ways. I will repeat, I am blaming the chinese government for these issues, not the citizens of china. Just once more for luck, I am blaming the chinese government for these issues, not the citizens of china.

The (interesting?) thing with bats though is you don’t even have to eat them. They are carriers of Coronaviruses (of many types) which pass to other animals through the bats’ urine, faeces and saliva. If humans come into contact with bat body fluids or have contact with/eat animals that have come into contact with bat body fluids, then the virus can spread to humans. I’m sure eating them would also be a bad idea though Smile

Remmy123 · 24/03/2020 08:56

No. Have a look at the clip circulating from Wuhan market. That's why. It's not god or Mother Nature sending us to our rooms!!

Sleepyquest · 24/03/2020 09:45

I agree with you OP. It's made me reevaluate what's important in life and what changes I want to make already.
Funny how much we take for granted now that we can't do anything Sad

Mummy103 · 24/03/2020 10:00

I live in london, right now i see blue skies, and hear birds from my window.
This makes a great change from the cars, helicopters, aeroplanes, people and sirens, etc

Happymind · 24/03/2020 10:00

Morning.
It seems there's a mix of opinions . To those who I've offended - I'm sorry. But I think there are a lot of us just trying to make sense of things in our own way. We will never all agree.

OP posts:
itsgettingweird · 24/03/2020 11:29

Howirresponsible do you have a link? I was still under the impression it was passed from an animal - can't remember the name of it! (Something like pangolin?)

itsgettingweird · 24/03/2020 11:34

Something has occurred to me.

We hear how much China is autocratic with a strict regime and that's why they could be locked up immediately and tracked.
So on the flip side how is it possible that there's so many markets running (what sounds like illegally) which risk viruses mutating/ jumping from animal to humans?

RoLaren · 24/03/2020 11:38

What did the dinosaurs ever do to Mother Earth?

Booboostwo · 24/03/2020 12:00

Will Mother Earth be providing electricity, WiFi and Netflix for those in the developing world so they can also learn the lesson while choosing whether to go out and die of COVID 19 or stay in and die of starvation?

The80sweregreat · 24/03/2020 12:14

If they are eating wildlife then other diseases may appear over time. Strict regulations need to be in place to stop this happening again. Easier said than done of course.

milveycrohn · 24/03/2020 12:15

I understood the disease originated in bats, via another animal, maybe a pangolin. I think the DNA? of the virus has been examined.
The Chinese eat this wildlife because many starved during the cultural revolution, etc
However, the market practises such as open cages stacked on top of each other, so that the faeces, etc fall to the other animals in the cages below.
Diseases often start in bats, because they are mammals and live in large colonies, and fly about spreading it. ( eaten by other animals).
So, the market practises of some areas should be improved, and the Chinese authorities could have prevented the movement of people as soon as it was known, instead of trying to cover if up.
An analysis shows people left Wuhun and spread all over the world, before it was shut down by the chinese.

SpudleyLass · 24/03/2020 12:17

The greater reason its happening is because of the virology lab in Wuhan somehow managed to leak the virus. Accidentally, mind you, I don't believe it was deliberate.

There are accidental positives to it but there are plenty of environment conscious folks who are going to suffer and/or die from Covid 19.

Seems dark to suggest nature is ''teaching us a lesson''

PeterPanGoesWrong · 24/03/2020 12:39

You’re correct. It’s ridiculous!

user1497873278 · 24/03/2020 12:40

The reason this is happening is because viruses and mild spores are deadly than any chemical weapon, and have lived on earth long before us, wake up everyone.

Olliephaunt4eyes · 24/03/2020 12:46

So we will learn the joy of a simple life by spending months building up a new normal where we stay inside, communicate solely electronically and rely totally on technology to keep our society going?

Yeah. Makes sense. Hmm

cushioncovers · 24/03/2020 13:16

A simple life? No I doubt it. But maybe some people will be less wasteful and focus on more important things after all this is over.

HowIrresponsible · 24/03/2020 14:07

My 2 cents is that people will always want the opposite of what they have.

Before this it was full of AIBU to not go to this wedding, this hen party, my best friends b.day, not allow any visitors until the baby is 3 months old, should I go NC with my mother

Now people are screaming they can't have these things.

Wtf

I mean we all want the opposite of what we have and we are never happy
